In 1979 I was wandering through the Botanic Gardens in Belem, and a gentleman overheard me chatting with a travel companion, he approached us and asked if we'd be interested in teaching English at a school he ran in Rio, he'd get us an apartment, pay wages etc. We were going that way so I thought it was a great offer but unfortunately my partner spoke no Portuguese and had to decline. As I was his translator I had to stick with him. Almost every day I think back to that day, and what if? WHAT IF? Our lives are full of so many what ifs.

I started studying Portuguese when I met my wife to be who is from Portugal. My first teacher was an American who learned Portuguese in Brazil. Her passion for teaching us about Brazilian culture and the Portuguese language was a great inspiration. Forty years after that first class my own passion for speaking this beautiful language is as strong as ever. When I first started listening to bossa nova I could appreciate the beauty without understanding the words. Over time listening to the music and learning the meaning of the the words has made bossa nova my favorite music. This really is beautiful music and understanding it has helped my to learn to speak Brazilian Portuguese and has also inspired me to learn more about Brasil , it’s history and it’s culture.
@@Grimm-- The difference between the Portuguese spoken in Brazil and Portugal is also in the way sentences are formulated, in the words and their meanings and in other linguistic issues, but the accent is the main thing. Because it has continental dimensions, Brazil has a vast amount of its own accents as well. It may even happen that Brazilians from different regions have some difficulty communicating, so imagine the difference between the Portuguese spoken in South America, Europe and Africa...

This IS music. Joao being one of the founding members of Bossa Nova, put his eternal imprint with his words, songs, and guitar. It was said that his breath was music. I was saddened by his death ln 2019, and in particular the circumstances. Joao Gilberto lives in my soul.

Man,that opening track! Joao gets the groove going so strong and yet so effortlessly. A lesser musician would be it to death,monotonously so. Gilberto stokes it like a low flame,making it simmer so wonderfully. "Less is more" never sounded so good! My favorite "get up and get going" track,always convinces me that I-we-can make it,after all.

So tragic how Joao's life spiraled after the turn of the millennium. No family, living alone for a decade, mired with financial issues and eviction before dying in obscurity.
Did he really? I've read an article in portuguese that he lived quite a good life in fact, never having to cook again. He lived with his daughter, who called every day to a restaurant downtown in Leblon (which is not a cheap restaurant, either) for them to deliver his meals. But well, the only true "fortune" he kept around was his royalties. Whoever wins his inheritance in court will have access to the bank account where his royalties are still being deposited day by day every time we listen to his music in UA-cam and in similar places that got copyrighted.... Still, I find it weird that he died facing eviction and financial problems.
This isn’t entirely factual He was a recluse who lived alone by choice & was trying to resolve some legal issues in his last yrs., he wasn’t “left alone” by any stretch of the imagination

I went to Brasil in 1965 after their dictatorship ended. How great it was that i arrived soon after. I went down with my Dad's job with the State Departmeent. The next seven years had consumed all of my life interests. Oh how i love Meu Brazil ! Ever since i haven't been able to fall asleep without my Btasilian Bosa Nova Jaz. As a brazillian and bossa nova lover I say to you all over the world that it's sad to assume that our country didn't liked bossa as a whole. The "mass of people" don't like the soothing samba, they are more likely to listen fast paced samba that goes better to parties full of beers and "cachaça". That may be one of the core reasons that João lived and played more in the United states and Europe than in this own country.

Anyway, I am just wanting to learn whatever I can because I am U.S. citizen (do not know much). I do know, however, that Brazilians have something very special to be proud about due to Bossa Nova music, which, to me, is one of the best genres in my he entire world. I have been able to gather that Joao Gilberto is the foremost artist of Bossa Nova; now, I am setting out to listen to the music of the other great Brazilian Bossa Nova artists.

How did he pass away? It says the family did not disclose any details my guess is cancer
It says he died peacefully at home aged 88 after a short illness - how are those unfortunate circumstances. I think he did great!

This music is timeless and transcends national identity or boundaries. What is amazing is this grand Brazilian music premiered in the early 60s. A fantastic innovation for that time and still today it echoes sweet and beautiful and inspiring for musicians and listeners of all stripes, and age groups: Antonio (Tom) Jobim, Gilberto, songbird Astrud Gilberto, and the great Stan Getz were pioneers of this fantastic music from Brazil, one of the earth's great peoples.

Today is the first time I am listening to this piece of music, I started about 12 mid day and it's 7: 30 pm now, all I can say it is simply therapeutic, I poured myself a drink of Vodka and tonic and I find myself in a different zone, Jamaica is the land of reggae music, but if you need something to appeal to your inner self, soothes You, relaxes You, clams you and propels you to a place of peace and share tranquility, this is my stop, today was a beautiful day.

my dad used to listen to this album a lot when i was a kid, and all i could remember was The Girl From Ipanema, but not the lyrics! so ive been trying to find it for a while, and im so relieved that i finally have!
The lack of vibrato in his voice, keeps your attention on the music, and not on him.

Such a good taste Brazilian music, beautiful people too.
Man,that opening track! Joao gets the groove going so strong and yet so effortlessly. A lesser musician would be it to death,monotonously so. Gilberto stokes it like a low flame,making it simmer so wonderfully. "Less is more" never sounded so good! My favorite "get up and get going" track,always convinces me that I-we-can make it,after all.

The first is so beautiful....Why does this song bring such tears of joy? Singing to my heart...wow, powerful.
It feels like the singer is whispering in my ears..
So tragic how Joao's life spiraled after the turn of the millennium. No family, living alone for a decade, mired with financial issues and eviction before dying in obscurity.
Did he really? I've read an article in portuguese that he lived quite a good life in fact, never having to cook again. He lived with his daughter, who called every day to a restaurant downtown in Leblon (which is not a cheap restaurant, either) for them to deliver his meals.
But well, the only true "fortune" he kept around was his royalties. Whoever wins his inheritance in court will have access to the bank account where his royalties are still being deposited day by day every time we listen to his music in UA-cam and in similar places that got copyrighted....
Still, I find it weird that he died facing eviction and financial problems.
This isn’t entirely factual He was a recluse who lived alone by choice & was trying to resolve some legal issues in his last yrs., he wasn’t “left alone” by any stretch of the imagination
LOVE me some Stan Getz/Joao Gilberto/Tom Jobim et al. and Bossa Nova/Tropicalia!! 🎶💞 I've loved it since I was 7 or 8, hearing my father's records. It's more powerful than any modern pharmaceuticals!

I went to Brasil in 1965 after their dictatorship ended. How great it was that i arrived soon after. I went down with my Dad's job with the State Departmeent. The next seven years had consumed all of my life interests. Oh how i love Meu Brazil ! Ever since i haven't been able to fall asleep without my Btasilian Bosa Nova Jaz. Meu Corasao e sempre do Brasil.

As a brazillian and bossa nova lover I say to you all over the world that it's sad to assume that our country didn't liked bossa as a whole. The "mass of people" don't like the soothing samba, they are more likely to listen fast paced samba that goes better to parties full of beers and "cachaça".
That may be one of the core reasons that João lived and played more in the United states and Europe than in this own country.
Cachaça is delicious, though. Must be one of my favourite alcoholic drinks.

Hi Leandro. Thanks for giving me more insight into how Brazilians have felt about Bossa Nova; a few months ago I saw a comment saying something about how most Brazilian s today do not like Bossa Nova...
Anyway, I am just wanting to learn whatever I can because I am U.S. citizen (do not know much). I do know, however, that Brazilians have something very special to be proud about due to Bossa Nova music, which, to me, is one of the best genres in my he entire world. I have been able to gather that Joao Gilberto is the foremost artist of Bossa Nova; now, I am setting out to listen to the music of the other great Brazilian Bossa Nova artists.
That,s the power of músic,it brings everyone together,and its doesn,t matter wich country you live in!
