    The only time I got handles in Blender was in Masking or actually working with bezier curves in the layout window, not in the graph editor.

    I remember the first time I saw the graph editor I thought I peeked into the apocalypse...I immediately closed it and trembled in fear.
    Now I cant wait to jump into it and finesse the micro movements of everything on the screen
    Any chance you could dive into a breakdown of how to animate or translate the blender timeline to beats per minutes...like animating a character dancing to a song... i cant wrap my head around how to translate the main beat/tempo of a song onto the frames per minute...

    • @Smeaf
      @Smeaf  2 роки тому +7

      Remember you can type Python expressions into fields. So for example if “bpm” is beats per minute and “t” is duration in seconds, then you can calculate each from the other as
      bpm = 60 / t
      t = 60 / bpm

  • @MationsDam

    Very useful stuff right here, as an animator with 2 years of experience, I honestly love how I can immediately look at the graph/curve editor and say *"holy sh!t, I understand what i am looking at even if I've never seen this before"* , blender is honestly pretty complicated to get use to, I mostly have been using roblox to animate but I have been slowly using and adapting to blender, plus I have alot more to learn, this video was (again) very useful for any beginner, especially me myself, I mostly just stick to the sine or quad easing styles since they are very good for making your animations smooth, but I do think a lot that key mapping has something to do with making a good animation too, overall I am trying this once I get my laptop back since it broke and haven't animated for like a month now :'/

    this is a great introduction to the graph editor, I think all novice and beginners animators should learn how to read this. However I would caution against being too reliant on being stuck in the graph editor. I struggled many years with my animation because I was too concentrated on the graph editor and keeping my curves nice and clean, guess what? This doesn't translation into animation animation sometimes. The cons to spending time in graph editor during a big production:
    - too much time is handled on cleaning curves, you neglect what your viewport might be doing
    - What happens when there's two or more character interactions with rotations. Sometimes clean curves could mean your characters interaction won't be solid and often times feel like it's slipping or sliding
    - Not great for mocap
    - Good luck cleaning a hundred curves on complex rigs with 1000+ frames of animation within one week plus feedback from the animation supervisor

    i've been wanting to get into 3d animation for years, but never did because the graph editor is like _runes_ to me, i thought it was all completely random math bullshit, you going "oh no its literally just the 3d thing in 2d, its timing editing" made me both feel like an idiot and like i finally had the courage to get into it :)

    • @Smeaf
      @Smeaf  2 роки тому +2

      Lmao, literally, I don't know why this isn't taught more clearly in other graph editor videos, it's simply 3d shown in 2D. I'm glad I've been able to demystify it for you!

    • @aliensoup2420
      @aliensoup2420 2 роки тому

      @@Smeaf To be accurate, it is not 3d shown in 2d - that would imply some information is lost. It would be more beneficial to teach it for what it really is - a function editor visualized on a 2d axis. Motion as a function of time. Every channel moves in a single dimension + or - . Time provides the second dimension. Every would be animator should do themselves an enormous favor, and study some elementary algebra and analytical geometry (function graphs). We all learned it in high school, but either did not pay attention, or forgot it. There are plenty of math tutorials on UA-cam to fill the gap.

    Graph editor is not a 2D interpretation of 3D animation, as this thing you can find in non-3D related programs such as Premiere Pro

    I find it so funny that my physicist brain looks at those graphs (knowing pretty much nothing of animation) and think, well that makes sense

    This is very good information but your thumbnails can be a little misleading. While animating a basic cube to go from left to right may be easy. Animating a fully rigged character involves needing to control the curves for every keyframe of every axis many of which are moving at the same time but have different timing or spacing and also have independent axises to account for. It is most definitely not "So Easy" even for a professional team who have been doing it for years.
