The Curious Case of Alexis St Martin (June 6, 1822)

  • Being shot directly in the stomach isn’t generally conducive to living- a fact that makes the story of Alexis St. Martin all the more impressive because he not only walked off being shot in said organ at the age of 20 on June 6, 1822 at a range of less than a meter, but went right ahead and lived for another half century despite the wound going full Weathertop on him and never completely healing, giving scientists an almost literal window into how the body digests food. Watch the video for more on this fascinating story.

I love this new series, this one especially. I'd heard of this story before but never in this much detail, the part about his stomach growing a new sphincter is crazy. I love that tifo can take clickbait stories like this and actually do their research and make a video that tells the full story, this series definitely needs to continue!

I'd heard of this story too, but not about the personal side of the experiments. The ones I heard gave the impression that the gunshot wound was clean, that the experiments were conducted over a short period, and that the doctor-patient relationship was routine. TIFO did great here.

Aside from Simon's charisma (which is an obvious plus to any video), this newer model is very good thus far! It gives the viewer some water-cooler topics as well as using the dates to bring obscure historical narratives into the modern day in such a way that they seem relatable, as opposed to reading them in a history book where one has no feeling of connection to them. Good job gentlemen! All in all, another triumph!

That was a great format style, witty and engaging. That will win you extra minutes and views. While the "day in history" concept is practically a form of divination as far as subject selection, I think it can work. It's a bit Monty Python-esque, which really helps keep these academic matters alive.
For a Christmas episode, you could do an interwoven episode of George Washington crossing the Delaware (good tactic, bad sportsmanship), with the Hessian mercenaries saying, "Well, if you're going to play it like that, we quit. This job doesn't pay enough to miss the holidays!"). Then intercut with the controversy of Isaac Newton's birthday and how calendar changes put all such dates into a bit of chaos during history. ("We know it happened, but WHEN it happened depends not only on where you stand on the issues... but also on where you were actually standing at the time.")
