    My sister is a classical pipe organist. She used to play festivals - and won a lot of them. She was always worried because her rendition of a piece would sound "a little different" than everyone else's. That's because she would change the "phrasing" a little bit. Change tempo a little bit in places, extend a rest for a 1/4 or 1/2 a beat longer. And that is why she would win the festivals. Because instead of playing a piece "perfectly" she added a little of herself into it. The judges appreciated that and usually rewarded her for it. And I think she sounded better than the kids who could just play the notes exactly as they were written.

      @@maxi-me My mixes usually peak around -9dB. In the mastering phase I add gain and limit to bring peak volume to unity gain while keeping RMS around -12dB on average. The loudness war can suck a big one and I really don't care if my masters are at "competitive" levels. I'd rather have to turn up my volume and maintain natural dynamic range than have a loud master with no power behind the transients. In reality, if your'e mixing with a large dynamic range then you're probably winning the loudness war.

    • @TheRockinDonkey
      @TheRockinDonkey 3 роки тому +4

      It really depends on the record. If there wasn't a lot of dynamic range in the source recording, it's just going to sound louder without turning up the volume. Something like Pink Floyd which has a lot of dynamic range is going to get ruined, though.

    • @maxi-me
      @maxi-me 3 роки тому

      @@EdwardLammBass Whoa! That's some large headroom. You surely have excellent noise mitigation skills in capture. I simply have too much in the way of analogue artifacts to get that brave. Comes home to roost post mastering. XD
      Dynamic mixes always get rooked on radio. Those hacks clamp the hard knee like it's holding the roof up. Some of it's necessary to modulate but much of it is just signal abuse with intent of normalization.
      Had a favorite mastering engineer for many years who'd make "radio masters" of singles to send up. He was very good at outguessing the (near universal) protocol, but crisp wet mixes would still tend to have that "boom box in an oil drum" degradation over the airwaves.

The POINT is, he wasn't saying that perfect time can't feel good. He was saying that just because something is metrically perfect, doesn't mean that it'll feel good when you listen to it. You have to remember that his comment came during a time when drum machines were new and starting to get popular, and a lot of producers were putting musicians - even the top-tier players - through hell trying to get grid-perfect performances out of them. It's possible that the lack of a "groove" in popular music, due to quantizing, was offputting to you, but there's also something called _the Loudness Wars,_ where music is compressed so that the louder parts are the same volume (or nearly the same volume) as the quieter parts. This doesn't sound like it'd be that bad-just like "making everything play in time" doesn't sound like it should make things sound bad-but the issue is that it causes all of the transient loudness-think, the sudden strike of a snare cutting above the rest of the sound-to be compressed and to therefore lose all of their punch, character, detail and, perhaps one of the most important things, their _attack._
      So when you listen to music, the drums don't cut, there's no dynamic volume, the music doesn't "breathe," so you just get the impression of a constant, buzzing sinewave of sound.
      If you want to hear something recorded with a fairly high dynamic range, listen to _Unleash the Archer's_ song _Apex_ from the album of the same name. No auto-tune, no quantizing, no brickwall compression. Just sheer skill and awesome.

Bonham, Porcaro, Copeland, AVH, Peart, Rudd (yep, even Rudd pushes and pulls ever so slightly and perfectly) Now dat I be all growed up and my time is much better, I feel a great weight has been lifted to know that perfect time isn't and was never the goal in the first place. Appreciate you doing this comparison for us......It shows just how vital a real good/quality groove is to the success of a song or album. It's true that having everything lined-up to the grid/metronome can make edits easier but at what cost??? Maybe for less experienced players and bands it makes sense to align everything to the grid and for tenured players/bands you try to record the bands FEEL/Performance above everything else:)

  • @timothyjulian8356

    I don't think recording to a click is as evil as it's being made out to be. You can still have a click and a grid and allow the musicians to naturally push and lag against that metronome. It only sounds robotic when you quantize every individual note on each instrument to "perfection". You can still have human "flaws" but still be playing (more or less) in time to a metronome. Thus feel can still be maintained so long as you don't quantize everything to over-perfection.
    You have inspired me to take the actual final 2-track recording (aka CD) of this song and quantize just the snare to always land on 2 and 4 and wherever the other musicians land in relation to that, so be it. That will naturally come along for the ride. I strongly suspect that it will not sound nearly as sterile. More times than not, most people would never notice a difference. The reason they don't is because that relationship of musicians' natural feel is maintained - some will play a little bit ahead of the beat and some will play a little bit behind the beat and some will play closer to on the beat. This is the natural "feel" of the band. Swap out any single member of that band with a fully competent replacement and that feel will instantly change. Not because the musician is worse than the previous, but just because they are different in how they naturally line up to a beat in a band situation with those specific musicians at that time on that song. This is not conscious, it just happens. A metronome does not destroy the feel of a band. Strict quantization of everything everywhere kills the feel of the band. As long as you allow the musicians to line up naturally where they will in relation to the metronome, it's seldom a feel-destroying mandate.
    At least that's my opinion, which carries exactly as much weight as the rest of the other random dudes on the internet that don't know each other.

    • @jaklumen
      @jaklumen 3 роки тому

      My experience is different- I'm a classically trained musician, with next to no recording experience, especially that could compare in any way. But it still makes sense to me. I'm remembering my high school band teacher (who was actually grossly overqualified and he had a violent temper) force the concert band (basically an orchestra minus stringed instruments) to play to a metronome. Not the same vibe and synergy of a recording rock band, but, *shrug* take it for what you will.

      I've been trying to record guitar and can safely say the metronome is essential if you're trying to do anything odd with the drums. Doing a beat with the snare on one instead of the kick, fastest way ever to fuck yourself up and start playing the one on two.

    it's actually more due to laziness of some producer back in the day and it got passed down. you can create a tempo map in pro tools (always could) and thus be able to do midi to that tempo map, if you needed to add vi's and such, but because it's a little bit more steps in the process to get it proper, most people will just quantize everything to the grid. And I'm pretty sure Cubase has the same thing as beat detective where you can't get your maker to the transients and get the tempo of the song that way.

      @@BobbyHuff well you can either just hope that the feel is naturally in the recording, but if it isn't, you can align things to the grid, add a little bit of swing, and you can create a tempo automation just before you export your mix to be mastered.
      i've done this to a few tracks myself and it definitely gave the track a unique, subtle, but noticeable movement. better than being exactly on the grid, generally you can get away with going -5 to +5 BPM from your base tempo without breaking the groove, if you want to create a more exaggerated tempo drop then obviously you can add or take as much as you want, but yeah. that's the way it's best done, assuming the recordings aren't already good as they are.

    • @largepoodle6036

      @@BobbyHuff on several songs i had the tempo, for example at 120, automating between 115 and 125 on a constant loop at all times, incrementally increasing or decreasing by the decimal which makes it very transparent.
      it's smart to make sure that you're not resampling any audio clips, and that they are locked to the base tempo as not to mess up your playlist/arrangement when the tempo is being automated.
      for example if you start automating the tempo and you have audio clips in the playlist that aren't locked to the base tempo, they will stretch around in the playlist in realtime as the tempo is being automated
      i guess that depends on your DAW, but in my DAW, I have to make every audio clip locked to base tempo as to avoid that

    • @boohiss

      Can vouch for this as a solid way to introduce some humanity back into songs which are too gridded up. My goto is pushing the tempo by a couple bpms as you approach a chorus and then returning to the verse a few bpms faster than it previously was. Also, just like overshooting melodically, you can can introduce a verse which is a titch slower than baseline and then automate the tempo back up. These subtle changes can make a world of difference to how a song is received, even if the variations are not consciously perceived.

    In a young, label independent recording band, I guess it's all about money really. If we had the money we would give recording without quantizing a go but it's just so cost effective to grab a few good takes and have the engineer do the rest. And that's including the cost of hiring a rehearsal room to get better together to get to a point where we have that skill, before studio, although I think we mesh just fine live. From the documentaries I've seen about music making in the 70s-90s it just seemed like there was more space to breathe in the music world, more opportunities. Now so many people have to have two jobs just to make bills, there's so little time to hone your skills, and so little leg room to save money to record music professionally. It's more about luck than anything else, so it seems to me, to get noticed by someone who thinks you could make them money so they'll give you a chance.
    Maybe that's just the rose tinted glasses of the past, I don't know. Whenever some kind of wide spread phenomenon happens like this I always ask why, why did it start and why does it continue now, and most often the answer seems to be money

    Next, you should auto tune Marvin Gaye's vocals with T-Payne effect.

    Terrible terribleness! That’s incredible how time correction ruined this song!

    Wow, that really does make a difference. This just shows that the greatest rhythm guitar player of all time certainly doesn't need to be time corrected.
    As the saying goes, don't fix it if it ain't broke.

    It's interesting how happy and melodic it sounds when it's quantized -- not exactly the feel you want when you're talking about runnin' with the devil. This is the best example of feel vs. quantizing I've seen yet!

      @@BobbyHuff As mentioned, I stumbled upon this and have no idea about mixing, etc. What I am assuming you did was you did was made this into how the track would sound if it were mixed today? You may have mentioned that in your intro, but I skipped to the song.
      Anyways. You did an awesome job. Sounds absolutely awesome. Listening to this was cool, but all it does is make me want to listen to the original. Lol.
