Royal Enfield Taurus Diesel Motorbike cold start at -1,5°C

- Starting the Enfield Diesel at -1,5°C can be difficult. you can do the following tricks: add lighter fluid to the intake air (NOT eather-based liquids like the "quick start-spray", this may ruin your diesel engine, as it has a much higher flash point, and should only be used by petrol engines!!!). 2.) Change the engine Oil from 20W40 (summer oil) to 15W30 (normal oil) or 10W30 when under zero. 3.) it is possible to add oil to the air intake, this will increase the compression, however large amounts of smoke will appear when the engine starts. 4.) Add 15% Petrol to fuel tank, only do this under freezing temperatures. 5.) Warm the intake air, this is difficult, but the most effective thing to do. Keep in mind that when running at freezing temperatures the engine oil SHOULD UNDER ALL CIRCUMSTANCES be changed twice as often as under normal conditions. I know very few people do this, but oil you can buy at any fuel station, but a new motor you can t !!!
I went to the toilet poured myself a drink, came back and the guy was still pumping like a mad man.
Sounds like a fun weekend mate.
:)))))) :))))))) bhahahaha bhahahahaha bhahahahahahahahahahahaahhaahahha
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Dude, please use a comma. It seems like you have a bar in your toilet from that comment.
but, his toilet is in his bar.. he added the comma before "came back"..
After all that effort, and gasping for breath, you're greeted with a nice big cloud of diesel smoke. Refreshing.
I love the smell of Diesel in the morning!
@@dieselmotorbike2781 well spoken
5:17 Thank God. My leg was cramping up just watching you.
Bob, there is a port on the cylinder head with a rubber bung in it, add a squit of WD40 (NOTHING ELSE) and it will fire first time. I've owned a diesel enfield for 10 years now and use it daily in the UK whatever the weather.
What is even more astonishing is that seat, this man is tough as nails.
An absolutely awesome bike! I would love to own one some day! Speaking of which, I have a diesel motorcycle already, it's fully home built, and it has a starting system to get around this problem. It has a tank of propane which goes to a copper pipe with holes in it that wraps around the intake. -20 degrees out and I just open up that propane and light it off and she's ready to run in 2 minutes. Starts on the second kick every time.
Hi
As a Enfield Diesel owner my self i have a very different start procedure. I can see that you are not using the decompression valve technic... hence you get very tired :)
My way:
On ordinary diesel fuel:
10-30 degree celsius, set the decompression nod so it stuck, if not stuck, kick until it get stuck, kick with hand gently until it release, then kick again (with your foot) with a LONG stroke, not so fast as a 2 stroke, but firm, it's not a Harly so no need to jump high for show :)
-5-10 degree celsius, set the decompression..., when released add approx 1-2 cm.
-25-5 degree celsius, pore one cup of boiling water over dieselpump, then same as above, you need to find how much to add after release for stroke when it's cold.
All above will be done on first KICK.
Yes you read correctly -25 no problem.
The decompression nod is on the right back side of cylinder head.
Running on pure RME will keep the injector and exhaust perfectly clean, hence i run/ran on that.
Engine might object when switching fule, but just add extra stroke after decompressor released, like if was colder.
So summer RME and winter Diesel.
I have not run it on public road since 2001, but during 1998-2000 i drove it in Stockholm Sweden 1.5 year all year round.
For a Total of approx 27000km, i changed the front gear for a +3 bigger, top speed 115km/h laying on tank :)
Well 20 cm snow on the highway running att 80km/h and cars sounding their horns.... why one wonder :)
It still sitt in my garage waiting for refurbish of wires and possible a makeover for a cafe racer look :)
What is front gear size is , I mean what is meaning of +3 , I have same bike in working condition I want to change gear
Absolutely right
The police would never catch you on one of this. They would simply lose you in the clouds.
...just like squid and octopus do in the water.
Right it finally started but this would never start at -2 degrees. In the end it started because the guy got so hot that it raised the temperature of the surrounding air by a few degrees.
Lol man... u r damn funny..
wouldnt wanna get kicked by your right leg ! lol . thats a very cool old bike man ! nice
Hats off to you......such hard work, but still one of the funniest videos on youtube!
Just change engine oil to 0w40. It stays in liquid form no matter how cold the weather. I use it on my corolla and my 250 honda nx on winter. They start every time nicely, even in -30°C. Or just take a hairdryer, place it enabling to warm the engine and the cylinder. 5-10 of warming is usually plenty enough. This I use when I do my monthly engine warmup runs on my GSX 750 inazuma, which is stored on cold storage during long finnish winter.
can now kick a rugby/football a distance of 2 miles with his right foot.
Clown...my sides are sore laughing at that comment...Haha
I am absolutely worn out watching that start procedure,..but I just love the idea ( and sound ) of having a Diesel engine in a Motorcycle, especially a Triumph. This is the best of both worlds.
But he has to get a block heater and light weight oil for cold weather riding.
I love the way that the bike turns through 45 degrees before bike starts. If he'd tried for much longer he would have turned right round.
Just pour hot boiling water over the head, and then it will start with one kick!
(i have an enfield with a 13 HP diesel engine)
I too have a RE diesel bike.
From where you are?
That lighter fluid worked a treat!
Glad I can get my tractor started with electric start and a little starter fluid, looks like a nice bike.
Better workout then I have at the gym.
That must be amazing to drive. A complete travel in time.
Oh Bob, that was painful, but I'm still a fan of diesels motorcycles. Amelie ,thanks for the Naphtha info, sharp lady
atleast you get nice and warm before going out for a ride. haha..
i would get a hairdryer and warm up the air cleaner housing .
No, only women do that.
@@dieselmotorbike2781 Because it's not manly or because most men don't have a hairdryer ?
@@dieselmotorbike2781 hey I have same diesel engine motorbike and it still working well, 👍👌, and giving milage of 80 to 90 kmpl
@Al Morrison use a paint stripper gun. Real men have those. ua-cam.com/video/eVvO1tKKjRQ/v-deo.html @7.07 minutes
@@dieselmotorbike2781 what
By NOT 'pumping' up a partial amount of the compression stroke, you may get better results. The pumping reduces the 'heat of compression' significantly. An amazing bike--very practical.
Hey Boss, it's just me again. Don't worry I'll be into work today. What time? Oh, lets say sometime early this afternoon. If not probably tomorrow. What do you mean I'm fired???
*Grin*
:))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))) :):):)))))))))))))))
Alter! Respekt, Du hast nicht aufgegeben - Super!
Irgendwann kauf ich mir auch ein DIESEL-Moped, momentan favorisiere ich allerdings eine SOMMER mit HATZ-Dieselmotor.
Nein, man darf NIE aufgeben!!!
ja, zu der Sommer kann ich (und alle anderen) sich nur positiv äusern. Sie hat einen E-start, und ausreichend Ps, und das zeuch vom Sommer hat auch wirklich hand-und-fuss.
1) Can't imagine a more dangerous thing than starting this bike: if the engine fires back while kicking, they will find you on the roof;
2) Good luck walking tomorrow. I had a leg aching starting a 70 cc Scooter that did not fire up.
Good god. I'm tired just watching you do that lol. Beautiful bike.
Maybe you could build an electrically-powered device to turn the rear wheel. In high gear...turning the engine over. Perhaps a configuration like a rock tumbler drive, or a cable spool roller. Front brake on, of course!
Are you kicking through compression? No no. Ease the kicker through compression, just, then stroke the thing. You then have flywheel momentum to get it past compression and start. Works on big singles. No throttle on the gas bikes, diesel? You don't want it to kick back, might break some thing or another. Good show.
Zis eez a royal Enfield Taurus.
In southern India farmers used diesel powered pumpsets generating a meager 5-6 hp for 300cc capacity and some fieldhands thought why not shove it into a royal Enfield bullet (petrol powered with 350cc engine) .
Seeing this the actual company also started to use these greaves now I guess lombardini engines in the bike as OE fitment keeping everything else the same.
The poor bugger managed to start it is testament to his perseverance, as even in India it's difficult to start unless you know the proper synchronisation of kicking it.
I guess a simple modification would be to use a pull starter.
We can't use heaters and what not due to the prolly low capacity (6-8Ah) battery being used.
Now in India even the petrol fired engines are notorious to start a wrongly timed kick can end with shattered foot or shin bones.
Even now you can buy the petrol fired ones they boast oodles of new technology nowadays and have to wait ages to have one delivered as the wait times have stretched so long. Btw they're plagued like anything with such problems as misaligned chassis, chassis getting cracked, chewed up sprockets , wheel perpetually out of alignment , bearing being chewed and spat out etc.
It's good morning exercise before heading to work.
yes, and my neighbours love the smell of Diesel in the morning!!!
Trick i use that helps is rolling the bike in 1st gear with clutch in a few meters back and forth, then starting the same way as I'm rolling, it's a PITA but it works
Nice thing about this motorcycle. You don't need a gym membership. It's included. 🤣
Oh my what a old beast of a bike. I love it.
The bike of a man.❤
it really does sound exactly. like the cement mixer at work
A little spray of ether works wonders. Or you could drill out the cylinder head and fit a glow plug...
Legend says he is still pumping!!!
loool the Time you need to start i need to drive with my Bike to the finish!
I had a diesel bullet once, ofcourse in south India there was no such thing as a winter but still...in December or Jan, I would wake up early to start the bike and let it idle for a while...before I made a trip anywhere.
Wow sir nice attempt, it started finally is it a military bike please let me know
i know you probably don't want to modify it, but why not put a little port on the intake runner so you can drop the starting fluid in post filter?
Just some advise. When starting it in the cold take a torch and heat up the engine block a little. This will act like glow plugs and it will start much quicker
Very nice bike, I really like the video. What year is it, thank you
remind me not to buy a diesel motorcycle
A better perfume than Diesel has not yet been invented.
He'd use less calories (and time) walking to wherever he should go...
@@dieselmotorbike2781 absolutely
I love those Bikes.
Its a great army bike you have an excellent one
Fuck man!! That was hell like effort bro.. I donno how u still managed to keep that confidence and start it👍
You must buy eter in spray. Spray little bit into air filter spray and go after first kick (or maybe better first 2 kicking without it for better oil moving).
Ok I just read you comment under film. Its not true, when amount of ether is small). You can spray propane-buthane gas (simple cheapest bodyspray). Better not use typical cockpit spray because it closing airfilter flow, it's oil-based component) Diesels running on bropane-buthane sometimes..
well yes, then it starts on the first kick, however I wanted to demonstrate the kickstart abilities without any help at freezing temperatures.
I also had deisel bullet. no need these much kicks .its an art
It's a diesel at freaking subzero temps...of course it's not gonna be easy
very hard work, stinking, loud, slow, weak, old technic, neighbours
hate you - and these are only the positive characteristics (you realy must love that thing) ;-)
Far easier to heat the intake pipe with a flame maybe a gas torch?
Or like we did with our diesel equipment, a rag soaked in diesel wrapped around a stick and set alight and then held near the intake to draw "some" of the flame into the cylinder to aid combustion by heating the air and the vapour
he wants to take that lump out and replace it with a petter diesel engine out of an old dumper or cement mixer. That, is hard work!
Oh finally waited for long time
I could come from the market by this time, seriously wasted my time
A must to ownership of this bike is.... never sleep in!!!
The happyness of the neighbours.
My neighbors love the smell of diesel in the morning!
Good exercise. She's not a fast get away machine .
Good bike..it keeps the rider warm
solid investment for 2014 > starter instead of kickstart
no thanks, Ill rather invest in burgers...
Taurus dancer
How many times u break the kick spring?
😅😅
3:10 not such a cold start anymore
At least it warms you up for the ride!
LOL. This bike has lots of soul, but my Yamaha would have been down the road 5 minutes ago even on a cold morning.
does it generally need that much kicking to get the engine started ?? or was it because it has not been started for a while... ?
Even the "petrol" Royal Enfield was a pain to start... What about the "Glow Plug" (light it from the battery, then instant start (well ignition of the diesel fuel that was injected)... Compression does not look all that good??? I would like to see it with 3 pots? each with a fairly long stroke & "glowplug"...
I need a nap now.
I know what I'd do with the lighter fluid lol
I am glad I have a Honda, but good exercise
Easiest way is to put a teaspoon of oil into the starter plug. Then kickstart. Will only take 3 kicks max!
Reminds me of trying to start an old Harley
.... and that's all there is to it!..... ha, ha, .... I thought you said at the start that there are several tricks that you can do, Bob...., what are the others?!....
I've classic 350 new edition which runs on petrol, its more efficient than old enfields but only advantage of diesel engine is that it gives mileage of 80-90 while new enfields gives only 30-40
Hats off to your fitness ... :-)
This could be the best gateway bike after a bank robbery.
Nice morning exercise routine... where can I get one of those? So that I can pass through that as well... I want one quite badly.
Hectic kick start.
I think you should also get a diesel refrigerator, washing machine and air conditioner.
What a trooper.
I guess it lacks compression when cold. Probably thinner oil like 5W40 would do the job and starting wouldn't last that long. Or maybe a few drops of oil onto a piston would make it sealed and make an ignition possible much sooner.
ok yes the bike took a lil to start, sure, given its age that wasnt really that bad, what is most surprising is that after you've got it started it idles quite nicely (any choke?), my harley doesnt idle that nicely on cold days even with choke
Maybee you should consider adding CERATECH from LIQUI MOLY to your oil. That will solve the problem.
Finally!! try a tiny shot of ether next time.
And this, folks, is why the electric starter was invented. I'm curious if this engine has a glow plug (and if it's working).
It is a direct injection engine. No glow plug, just compression starting. The electric starter is great. But in freezing conditions requires a fresh battery, that needs to be recharged over night from AC outlet. Even in warm summer the kick start is hard. 20.7:1 compression and a coupled gearbox is taking power.
bike surely started the guy
Terminé cansado despues de ver el video. Me tuve que sentar a tomar aire!
Después que arranco la moto, me asentó, y jo tome aire sabor diesel. Que rico!
hmm , this small deisel engine does not have a pre-combustion chamber does it ? i dont know how these really work i just know that if you try and use either or quick start you will pop the head or heads off a block.
That looks like fun!
One word, ether!
Mine will definitely have the electric start option..
Wow, the only thing I learned from this, is do not get a diesel motobike lol. just wondering Bob, were you going hunting that day?
What about having a glow plug there? Diesels start right away withy those... The idea is great, anyhow. And, yes you get good physical condition b y that way (without the glow plug, that is) too.
Dobry sposób na rozgrzewkę,diesel.Pozdro
have you thought of adding a glow plug to the intake or the cylinder head for a easier start.
You're my hero!!!!
Push-starting it might be more efficient.
Very difficult to push start
Rear wheel would tend to lock up and tough on the gearbox.
Habe mir für meine Taurus einen Gaskartuschenlötbrenner besorgt.
Für kalte Zeit im Winter den Zylinderkopf ca.3/5 min, vorwärmen, dann kommt er sofort.
So. does it have a primer plug on the valve cover ?
i think he is not aware of decompression lever
and with only a meer 40 kicks it started....im in!!! lolololololol
thankfully old hand cranked lister diesel engines and modern rope start are much easier to start without adding oil to the cylinder.
