The Farmer Growing 400 Different Kinds of Potatoes

  • Consider the humble potato. Many of us take the starchy tuber for granted. But not Julio Hancco Mamani. That’s because deep in the Andes mountains, in the Cusco region of Peru, this “Potato King” is continuing a family legacy by cultivating more than 400 native varieties of the crop. But he’s not just growing them for fun. Mamani’s goal is to preserve the great variety that he has established for future generations and encourage others to love the noble tubers as much as he does.

      Yasuo The Unforgiven that's kind of a double edge isn't it. It shows that he cares for the future enough to preserve the diversity of the potatoes more so than family. It may have been translated wrong as well, maybe the translators could have phrased it better.

    • @PaolaGarcia-hx3ye
      @PaolaGarcia-hx3ye 7 років тому +32

      Have you seen it? Most of the people (not all of them) here are used to peel the potatoes before using it. That's because unless you're buying from a supermarket (and even there) the potatoes are brought right after the harvest in the fields. I mean, they don't get washed. They get picked and throw in a truck to be transported. So sometimes is better to just peel it in case we don't wash it well.
      So, yeah, I'll cry too if I had to peel that and I don't even need to be married.

    In Peru we have more than 3000 types of potatos and they are organic as well. It's not allowed to use GMO in Peru...agriculture and culture go hand to hand in our country because traditions are very important for us.
    Like potatoes for example we have 50 types of corn, mote than 20 types of bananas and so on.

    • @Rinsuki
      @Rinsuki 6 років тому +18

      As it should be! I hope nothing happens to your way of life. It makes me sad that here people are disinterested in agriculture and those who are get bullied into submitting to certain regulations.

      This is what's annoying. Humans have been genetically modifying plants for thousands of years, since the dawn of our time. Our ancestors have selected the desirable and bigger crops to breed. Everything you eat nowadays is gmo. I don't know about potatoes but the ancestors of corn looks NOTHING like the corn today

    • @attakullakullaoukonunaka4091
      @attakullakullaoukonunaka4091 6 років тому +33

      EK Uh... No. That's selective breeding -- not genetic modification. There's a major difference.
      The peruvian here is naturally breeding out his crops through cultivation. Not altering the DNA sequence in a laboratory.

      I understand a litle of quechua(Peru native language) he mainly speaks quechua, but he mixed it with some spanish words, because some words as "three and a half hours" didint exits in inka's period, so he speaks spanish in that part (altought numbers can be translated to quechua), also quechua as language has missing some words because natives were forced to speak spanish, and Inkas didn't manage writing techniques, nowadays is hard to find people who speak purely quechua, my grand speaks it fluently and it's a pleasure to hear him :).

    He doesn't really remember where his love of potatoes comes from, though he does think he got them from his father.Mum always said he was a champion sprinter, who burst into her life "in a flash of greenish-purple light". I'm Peruvian, and have to say this; "GOTCHA IRELAND, WE WERE THE MAIN POTATO PEOPLE!"
    Sorry, had to diss Ireland, I'm even Italian where I can diss them with their bagpipes, but that's another video for another day.
