  • It may be the largest ride at Knoebels, but is it the best? It certainly seems to get overshadowed by the smaller wooden coaster next door!

When Twister first opened in 1999, I was still working at Knoebels, and I used to get 2-3 hours of free ride time before I had to run rides for the rest of day. They ran some many test runs each morning to break it in that I was the main volunteer. I had probably did 45 continuous rides on this thing in that testing time every day since it opened in July 1999.
Phoenix, I would always do towards the end of the night I would start my day at 8am wrap up by 9pm, then ride phoenix for the last hour in any open seat I could get as even with twitser phoenix was still more popular. However, the years haven't been kind to Twister. It has become super rough and needs an entire retracking from start to finish. Phoenix maintains its smoothness because of its top 10 status so it gets more love, but if they put the $$$ into this like they do phoenix every year Twister could be a top 15 coaster easily but due to the roughness it is not even top 25 some years.

I actually worked at Elitch's back in the day of the original Mr. Twister, so when I went on Twister at Knoebels I naturally had that in the back of my mind. Having said that, I thought this was an awesome coaster. One of my favorite parts of Mr. Twister was always the turnaround before the first drop with those CRAZY lateral g's. And Twister has two of them! I still feel like the original might have been just a bit crazier, but it's hard to know for sure since memory is a tricky thing. Love this ride and love Knoebels! Great review.

I have never been on Twister at Knobels but I used to go visit the old Elitch Gardens in Lakewood Co and I remember riding the original Mr. Twister back in the mid to late 80's and early 90's and I remember how much fun that ride was. You never knew what to expect each time you ride it. I agree with you that the original is better even though I have never been to Knobels.

I have not ridden Twister, but the original Elitch's Mr. Twister was my first big coaster, and I rode it again several years later. Twister's layout is based on a mirror image of Mr. Twister, with some changes for space--the split lift hill, and moving the huge helix to wrap around the station. I remember Mr. Twister's laterals on the high turnaround after the lift to be utterly terrifying, seemingly threatening to pitch you right off the edge into the void, since of course you were held in by nothing but a buzz bar. Crazy ride.

Mr. Twister in Denver's elitch gardens was my first virgin experience on a major elite rollercoaster!....I can tell you that the new twister is a new and improved version of the original and that's major.....this monster is not much on airtime but if you wanna take a physics class on a field trip to teach students about lateral g's....not airtime....this is the best teaching tool to prove your talking points.....all wooden coasters are going to beat your azz and will require 2 Tylenol tabs post ride but it's all good because the ride experience will follow you all day and even when you retire to the pillow that night 🌙.....A+, except for that headache...

I also think it's interesting that TWO parks have coasters intended as the successor to Mr. Twister, since today's Elitch Gardens has Twister II. But nobody seems to like Twister II.

    • @TheLewistownTrainspotter8102
      @TheLewistownTrainspotter8102 2 роки тому

Having been on both, yeah the Knoebels version is the better one. Twister II doesn't feel much like a twister at all, whereas Knoebels' one does (I mean, look at how the hill out of the double helix threads through the turn transitioning between the lower and upper lift hills).

  • @walterandclaude

I've always preferred Twister to Phoenix. Long before I was an enthusiast. Before I knew of the hype surrounding Phoenix. Twister provides a smooth out of control layout with a couple large floaty drops in the back and a relentless lateral filled layout maintaining its speed until the end. Normally I don't care for lateral based coasters, but Twister is an oddball for me. Its just so good. I can't get enough of it. Awesome wooden coaster. I regret choosing to not ride Legend when I was at Holiday World for fear of it being too rough. In all fairness though, I rode Screamin' Eagle the day before, which banged my back into the backrest so hard and repeatedly it knocked the wind out of me and bruised my lungs. I'll never understand why so many say it's smooth. It doesn't jackhammer but that doesn't mean it is a smooth ride. I was lukewarm about Legend at the time but now I realize that I don't know when I will be back, and I chose to miss out and I regret that decision.

I first rode this coaster 3 years ago during the opening week--it was speedy and smooth and terrific. I rode it again the same year in the fall and it was a different ride--very rough and breakneck. If that fall ride had been my first experience with Twister, I would not have given it as high a mark because of the roughness. The smoother/rougher distinction was also true of Phoenix, and I'll bet this is true of many, maybe most, wooden coasters. Ride them at the beginning of the season for the smoothest ride.

Both are great rides that are always getting better every year but when it comes to the fun factor Phoenix pulls away . I think many enthusiasts would prefer to do a mini marathon on Phoenix than on Twister . I feel the most visually scary part of the ride is sitting on the left outside at this point: 3:26 I always feel like it's going to take a dive into the Crystal Pool and I've noticed that a lot of hands up in the air people brace themselves going around that turn before putting their hands back up for the non stop intense journey . I hope in his next Knoebels video Taylor would warn enthusiasts that Knoebels is a FULL day type of park. So many people are guilty of not allowing enough time to take in all the great attractions Knoebels has .

i've only been to knoebel's once in summer of 2014...i loved the day but highlight was i got to re-ride phoenix, as i rode it when it was the rocket at playland in san antonio when i was in high school. my cousin and i rode it 25 times in one night! i was so happy this awesome ride was saved. another is twister. although the original Mr. Twister in colorado is no more (not sure why elitch's ever moved from the old location), the knoebel's version is an amazing tribute with some original surprises all on its own (the double lift hill for instance). and the whole ride is a mirror image of the original as you went clockwise through the helix...but it's been a very long time since i rode the original and hard to find decent film stock on it on you tube but i would say knoebel's did an awesome job recreating one of the most memorable coasters i've experienced.

I love when the pre-lift is a toned-down sample of what's to come. RMC does this a lot with little off-axis humps. Copperhead Strike does it with the immediate hangtime jojo roll. This ride does it with a decent speed low-banked turn. It's just a cool little touch and it really helps to build anticipation for what happens after the drop.

I live local and as a kid that barely was big enough to ride, I would lock my feet under the seat in front of me and never hold on, that way you experience the hang time in full effect. I didn’t really like this during the day, I’m just not a huge fan of laterals. But I did it at night, and it was amazing. It’s crazy how much better it was at night, super intense and relentless when you can’t see anything and it just kept building up intensity as it went out.

I agree with most of this review in terms of Twister being underrated. Your review actually had my expectations lower than they should have been, as there is good airtime on the drop and with that first turnatound. I bet people would rave about the airtime at the start of Twister if Phoenix wasn't in the same park. I do prefer Phoenix though, nothing beats that last run of airtime hills (and I do mean if I'm ranking individual coaster moments, Phoenix's finale would be #1 for me. A good ending isn't enough for me to say it's my #1 wooden coaster but I can certainly understand why it has gotten that honour).

The coaster is even crazier at night. No lights and with no idea where you are going, it has been one of my most intense roller coaster experiences on my east coast coaster tour.

Great ride! I know it's overshadowed by Phoenix, and maybe it doesn't "do" the most, perhaps that's why it gets so little coverage (I mean I never hear this ride talked about) but its super fun, fairly intense. Maybe not top 10 woodie but top 15 for sure. The layout is unique and those helixes are great.

Agreed with assessment as a local. We warm up on Phoenix and then go to Twister. A solid 10 times each year. We raise our kids on Phoenix before even considering them for Twister.
It has a good mix of design. 2 solid drops, crazy speeds, definitely agree with the laterals, an absolute SHRED through the tunnel as you hear the train thunder through, then some decent air time near the end.
It was mentioned that it was designed by a guy < 20 years old. I can’t recall specifics atm. Anyone dig into that?
Great coaster and one of my favs. Better than Phoenix? Apples and oranges, but I’d pick Twister any day.

I also think this is a criminally underrated ride. Phoenix was my first ever roller coaster so I have a soft spot for it but I can't say that I like it better than Twister. I've always said that you really can't compare the two because they're polar opposites and I like them both for what they are. However, over the last few years I have enjoyed riding Twister more because Knoebels has had it running better than Phoenix. They have this coaster running as good as it ever has to the point where I'd call it perfect. It's smooth with just enough of that wooden coaster bumpiness to exaggerate the speed which adds to the excitement.

Just a thought haha but have no idea and I haven't ridden either so I can't say so for myself but now that I have seen this video I want to go there and ride it really badly and thats why your vids are the best!

I love Twister, but still find Phoenix just a bit better. It's definitely a great double woody combo package at Knoebels. Their Flyer (if you know what you're doing) is the most intense ride at the park.
What do you think they will do for the 100th anniversary? 2026 will be here before you know it. It will have been 9 years since Impulse by then, so it should be the "biggest" addition every.... I have my thoughts, but curious of yours.

I prefer Twister to Phoenix, and it isn’t really that close. Phoenix was my first ever coaster growing up, so I have a nostalgic connection to it, but Twister is a great ride. It’s not better than Voyage or Legend, but it is better than Raven, Beast, Mystic Timbers, and-yes-Phoenix. Twister is one of the most underrated coasters in the US, and it is easily one of the five best in PA. It may be top 3 in PA.
