Favorite part must be the whole chase scene after the hiding scene, where a new religion is created and splinters off into a few different ones. One detail that got stuck from the first watching was the man lingering at the place where the great gourd/shoe debate took place, then aimlessly wandering off. Years later I found out that was the great (now late) Spike Milligan. It kind of gets overshadowed by the full frontal noodlety soon after. RIP Graham Chapman and his noodle. Never forget.

The spaceship scene that seems so incongruous is incongruous, but it's also a nod toward the huge late-70s popularity of movies like "Star Wars" and "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" and stuff like that, sort of Terry Gilliam's acknowledgment of that film trend.

The Alien scene.. There's several theories about why that is in the movie.. One theory is simply that they needed some way to explain how Brian survived the fall from the tower and decided to go wild with it. Another is that its another stab at the religious aspect. Brian is saved by celestial beings, taken to "heaven"(space) and returned to Earth. Well here is a scene from that movie you came for but who cares back to the human brian movie.
11:58 When Emily went into that combination laugh and seal-bark, I thought I'd pass out laughing. Aaaaaand then she mentioned the "full frontal noodle-ty." I'm dead.
For me it's the faces. They're all just trying so hard not to laugh, and it cracks me up because it reminds me of every time I've tried not to laugh at a wildly innapropriate moment.
@@juliodavila424 Legend has it that the actors were told they would not be getting paid if they laughed. Granted, they still would have, but it worked.
@@nowthatsjustducky I've heard similar stories before, though the consensus seems to be that they are urban legends. It'd be pretty funny if they were true.
For me, Life of Brian is the best Python film, followed by Holy Grail and then Meaning of Life. The stoning scene, the Biggus Dickus scene and the Fwee Bwian scenes still crack me up.
My college roommate introduced me to this movie. His favorite quote which he would recite on any occasion with impeccable accent was the bystander's response to Brian's miraculous survival by spaceship from a fall off the tower: "Ooh, you lucky bastard!"
This movie is an endless source of meme-level quotes. I can pretty much guarantee that if you randomly shout out "He's not the messiah..." in any public space in England, you will get several replies as others rush to end the quote.
I have never seen Mathew struggle so hard to hold it together throughout the whole movie. Great reaction video. You both get so many of the jokes I love it!
Could not click on this fast enough, a legit personal Top 10 movie; the wise men coming back for their gifts, the gladiator driven to a heart attack chasing the prisoner, the guards falling out in laughter scene, the Latin lesson, the Hide and Go Seek, Brian goes to space, the crucifixion maitre'd - absolutely timeless brilliance.
Finally! This is perfect time to help me take my mind off of my granny sleeping away peacefully this morning at the age of 92. Always look on the bright side of life… My favourite scene was the grammar lesson xD This one does usually get a lot better on the consequtive watches
Ah, the good old days where you could show noodles and muffins without getting an R-Rating ^^ - My favourite gag is when the two guards with their speech impediment try to explain where the prisoners are, and as soon as the royal guards leave... they talk as if they were perfectly fine :D Great stuff ^^
I use the "we've got lumps of it 'round the back" on an occasionaly basis (when someone asks a very stupid question usually) and nobody has ever clocked on to where the quote is from
I like the bit where they're coming up throught the floor, out of the fig-leaf tile picture -- the one place every onlookers eyes would automatically be drawn.
I think the aliens ship was a referance to "Deus Ex Machina" - the God from the machine. Not the video game series but the trick they used to use in classical greek and roman plays. They would literally have a golden chariot decend from the heavens (on ropes) and pluck the hero out of a situation where he was about to be killed. It represented the favour of the Gods. Theres probably a page on it on Wikipedia.
Now I want to see a British Jesus whapping unsuspecting people on the noggin and declaring "You're cured, mate!" A bit of fun about Sue Jones-Davies, the actress who played Judith: She was mayor of Aberystwyth (I can't even) from June 2008 to May 2009, and sponsored a charity screening of _Life of Brian._ She was informed that the town banned the film because of her nude scene. She reversed the thirty-year-old ban. Also, Judith's full name is Judith Iscariot, as in "Judas Iscariot." That _kills_ me.
Graham actually sobered up for both of his lead roles. He struggled with alcoholism in general, but he apparently went out of his way to stay on the wagon during the two Python films.
Nice to hear some love for Yellowbeard. I don't get the apathy towards it, one of my favourite films. The whole film is worth it just for the cute earring gag.
Love this film. Grew up with it. This is my father's favourite comedy, he even has the stanza of Always Look on the Bright Side of Life tattooed on him.
It's a classic Deux ex Machina. Originally a device of Greek theatre it gives a character a completely unexpected out from a seemingly unsermountable situation.
I'm pretty sure George Harrison mortgaged his house to help them finish the movie after funding dried up halfway through. As to the full frontal noodlety, I think Emily went past flustered straight into flabbergasted at roughly the speed of light.
It didn't dry up, they couldn't get anyone to fund it but Palin or Idle was a good friend of George Harrison and had given him the script to read and when he found out they couldn't get any money for it he funded it with the motivation when asked why "I want to see this movie" :D
@@orarinnsnorrason4614 the Holy Grail was financed by Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin. Beatle George financed this movie, remortgaging his house without telling his wife.
Video posted 6 minutes ago, and I already can't wait until she hits the crucifixion scene! "Life's a piece of shit, when you look at it..!" ... It's like the beans scene in Blazing Saddles! :D
I thought I was done after Matthew laughed at "Incontinentia Buttocks," and then y'all hit me with "full-frontal noodlety" and "dangle ol' wangle," and now I'm dead from laughter.
The Biggus Dickus scene. The guards didn't know what Michael Palin was gonna say and the reactions are genuine. Even Michael had problems keeping straight face at times :)
Just now stumbled across your channel, (popped up because of this movie undoubtedly), and so glad that I have. Find you two's banter charming and entertaining. Will be going back and view shows that I have missed. The thing I may find I will enjoy the most is having seen most of these movies on your list, I get the same type of enjoyment of seeing Emily's reactions to high points, scenes, etc., as Matt does. That now shared moment that you can relate with someone. One of the many upsides that movies allow all of us. Keep up the good work you two, and bring on the full frontal noodlety!!
No one mentioned the cameo from the legend and major Python influence... Spike Milligan? He's the one who is left behind when they argued over which to follow, the shoe or gourd. Absolute comedy royalty there. They were filming in Tunisia and found out that Spike was on holiday, visiting WWII battlefields and immediately threw an invite his way. The result is that scene steal of a cameo.
I have been waiting for SUMM reaction to this movie since quite some time and enjoyed it now a lot. The UFO-scene got completely lost in my sieve-themed brain, but seeing it brought back the amazement from watching it decades ago.
Check out the show 'Not the Nine O'clock news' sketch "Monty Python worshippers" spoofing the debate that ensued when the church opposed the release of 'Life of Brian'.
"Come now. The leading figure in this film... What is it? Jesus Christ. He's quite clearly a lampoon of the comic messiah himself - our lord, John Cleese. Even the initials, JC, are exactly the same." 😆
Yeah, everybody was jumping on the sci-fi bandwagon. The James Bond movie Moonraker featured laser guns and spaceships (which are not in the novel), and it was released the same year as Life of Brian.
I mean no disrespect but i think it was a referance to "Deus Ex Machina" - the God from the machine. Not the video game series but the trick they used to use in classical greek and roman plays. They would literally have a golden chariot decend from the heavens (on ropes) and pluck the hero out of a situation where he was about to be killed. It represented the favour of the Gods. Theres probably a page on it on Wikipedia.
@@ravenmasters2467 That's an interesting take. Deus ex Machina is a well known trope in fiction, but in Monty Python it was clearly a movie reference. The whole point of the movie was movie parodies - bible epics, sword and sandal epics such as Spartacus and the like.
@@ravenmasters2467 there's also a Terry Gilliam quote from an interview: "Well, we didn't know what to do with Brian. He got himself to the top of the tower and we had to rescue him somehow, so I said, "OK, spaceship for that." That was purely it. It was funny, because this was at the time when Star Wars had just come out. I remember meeting George Lucas at the baggage roundabout in the San Francisco airport, and I said, “This was my chance to do a mini Star Wars episode.” ... so it's 100% confirmed now.
@@jasonl7651 You could well be right, Jason. But it still seems to point much more to Deus Ex Machima to me. Perhaps a mixture of both but then again, i concede i could be completely wrong. Thanks for the reply.

When you said Jesus's brother, I think you were thinking of Wholly Moses starring Dudley Moore as Moses brother who hated living in his shadow. It came out a year later and not as good but has some moments.
Did anyone else notice when Biggus Dickus finally shows up in the film, and he's lounging there on the fainting couch, he can't quite close his legs all the way?
The Monty Python gang was a hoot. My first exposure to British humor. Fast paced. Silly at times. Lady your snort when you laugh is killing me. Funny!!! They make fun of everything... Shocked? What do you think? Good, yes it is. Laugh until you cry... ood stuff.
Saw this in 1980 in Perth, Western Australia. The US 5th Fleet was visiting so the audience was almost half full of Marines and Navy personnel enjoying their leave; the US was getting into Monty Python at the time. 'The Christmas Card' and 'Away From It All' were warmups so almost as soon as the film started we were all roaring with laughter. When the lights came up my ribs and face hurt from laughing so much. Bloody marvellous. Edit: suggest watching Terry Gilliam's films 'Brazil' and 'Jabberwocky'. Hilariously bizarre.
"Noodelty"!!! Laughed my ass off when Emily called it that!! It will forever be etched in my mind. lol I'm with Matthew on rating the major Python movies. Holy Grail, Life of Brian then Meaning of Life. Followed by And Now for Something Completely Different. Awesome video as always guys. Looking forward to whatever you've got in store for us next. :-)
Nothing touches Brian for depth, breadth or longevity, in humour, puns, piss takes or philosophical critique or sheer schoolboy silliness. The greatest work Python ever did, including the parrot sketch, the Spanish Inquisition or the Holy Grail. The colosseum scene of Loretta's right to have babies, that alone was decades ahead of its time.
Brian being saved by a spaceship is their satirical take on Deus ex Machina (God from the Machine). It was a plot device used in ancient Greek and Roman theater where something outrageous and implausible(classically a God) is briefly brought into the story to resolve an impossible situation or redirect the plot back on course. A miracle, if you will. Or a cheap bailout, depending how you look at it or how it is implemented. In this case the aliens save Brian from an almost certain death when he isn't supposed to die...yet.
The bit where the Roman Centurion isn't offended by the message but the bad latin grammar and proceeds to give an impromptu lesson at sword point is quite possibly my favorite joke in anything.
Excellent reaction - as always! Great fun to see you enjoying the best of Monty Python. I'd be very interested in seeing your reaction to 'The Adventures of Baron Munchausen' - epic storytelling from most of the Python boys, with Jonathan Pryce, Robin Williams & Uma Thurman. Not one of Terry Gilliam's favourites, but it is one of his most coherent and has gained quite a following. And if not, try 'Time Bandits' or 'Brazil'.
A funny thing about the alien scene is that it was never part of the script. What they used for the alien scene was left behind by the previous film crew so they made use of it.
The space ship is an exaggerated Deus Ex Machina. Brian would have been killed falling from the tower, so the spaceship saved him -- this is considered a "machinery of the gods" because it is an unlikely and sudden plot device that "saves" a character.
I think it's "god out of the machine" because it's like "And then the furniture magically came to life and pushed the evil witch into the fire and Hansel and Gretel thanked God in Church every Sunday since."
Have you guys seen the film "Jabberwocky" from 1977? It isn't a Monty Python production, but it is full of Python actors, and co-written and directed by Python member Terry Gillum.
I have to side with Matthew. Although they are all very very close, for me it’s the Holy Grail, Life of Brian, The Meaning of Life. Always Look on the Bright Side of Life is my ringtone
Did you know that British metal band Iron Maiden use the song from this movie “Always Look on The Bright Side Of Life” as a song they use in the final outro of their concerts?
There's still "Now For Something Completely Different" to go in the Python film stack. I'm not sure if it's just a 'best of' the Flying Circus series but it's hilarious.

And than during the movie this scene saying. Well here is a scene from that movie you came for but who cares back to the human brian movie.
11:58 When Emily went into that combination laugh and seal-bark, I thought I'd pass out laughing. Aaaaaand then she mentioned the "full frontal noodle-ty." I'm dead.
Incontinetia Buttocks gets me every effing time.
For me it's the faces. They're all just trying so hard not to laugh, and it cracks me up because it reminds me of every time I've tried not to laugh at a wildly innapropriate moment.
This is one of my favorite comedy scenes. It kills me no matter how many times I’ve watched it
@@juliodavila424 Legend has it that the actors were told they would not be getting paid if they laughed.
Eric Idle sang that song at the closing ceremony of the London Olympics
It should be our unofficial national song
@@amandacogger3075 It kind of is. During the Falklands war, the crew of HMS Coventry sang it in their lifeboats while waiting to be picked up.
@@f0rth3l0v30fchr15t wow I didn't know that, thank you
@@f0rth3l0v30fchr15t worse things happen at sea, you know!
Spike Milligans cameo role is probably the best 30 seconds of film ever.
Best film about religion . Relevant more than ever.
It will always be relevant as long as religious superstition is allowed to affect our world and the decisions people make.
Finally! This is perfect time to help me take my mind off of my granny sleeping away peacefully this morning at the age of 92. Always look on the bright side of life…
My favourite scene was the grammar lesson xD This one does usually get a lot better on the consequtive watches
"So, anyways, I says to the guy, I says ...'
That's not just a good joke. We now NEED "Full Frontal Noodlety" Mugs and T-shirts.
Now I want to see a British Jesus whapping unsuspecting people on the noggin and declaring "You're cured, mate!"
A bit of fun about Sue Jones-Davies, the actress who played Judith: She was mayor of Aberystwyth (I can't even) from June 2008 to May 2009, and sponsored a charity screening of _Life of Brian._ She was informed that the town banned the film because of her nude scene. She reversed the thirty-year-old ban.
Also, Judith's full name is Judith Iscariot, as in "Judas Iscariot." That _kills_ me.
Graham Chapman was an AMAZING lead. King Aurthur; Brian; and Yellowbeard!!
However, he was also extremely problematic lead due to his personal issues like alcoholism
@@steeleye2112 I didn't even notice the Yellowbeard in the original comment before you mentioned it >_
Love Yellowbeard !
"Full-Frontal Noodledy" should be on a t-shirt 🤣
Love this film. Grew up with it. This is my father's favourite comedy, he even has the stanza of Always Look on the Bright Side of Life tattooed on him.
Not expecting the Spaceship arriving, is also what they said about Nobody Expects The Spanish Inquisition
And this was two years after the release of Star Wars: A New Hope. Everything, plus the kitchen sink...
She was flustergasted by the noodlety.
That was for The Holy Grail, not Life of Brian, because Grail was their first movie project after Flying Circus.
@@orarinnsnorrason4614 the Holy Grail was financed by Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin.
Beatle George financed this movie, remortgaging his house without telling his wife.
@@hansvandermeulen5515 Yes. True.
_"She's called.... Incontinentia. Incontinentia Buttocks."_
If you don't laugh at that scene, you are literally a Samurai!
Fun fact is that George Harrison from the Beatles financed the movie. And even has a part as an extra.
leaving out the big nose scene and the Loretta scene is unforgivable
Video posted 6 minutes ago, and I already can't wait until she hits the crucifixion scene!
"Life's a piece of shit, when you look at it..!"
...
It's like the beans scene in Blazing Saddles! :D
20:58 Star Wars came out two years before; Alien and Star Trek in the same year. Space movies were big.
1979s Moonraker is probably the best example. Sci-fi nonsense inserted into a story where it doesn't belong. That's what Monty Python were parodying.
The movie's Jesus (Ken Colley) was Admiral Piett in The Empire Strikes Back and Return Of The Jedi.
I thought I was done after Matthew laughed at "Incontinentia Buttocks," and then y'all hit me with "full-frontal noodlety" and "dangle ol' wangle," and now I'm dead from laughter.
" 'Alf a dinarii for me bloody life's story?!!" LMAO! Only Michael Palin can summon that kind of indignation. "Tho! Your fathew wasth a Woman ..."
I think Michael Palin absolutely smashes it in this film, every character he plays is comedy gold.
I believe he played 11 different roles in the film.
What about Jabberwocky? Not a "Python" film but might as well be.....
Along with Time Bandits and Brazil.
The adventures of Baron Munchausen is my personal favourite
With Monty Python, always expect the unexpected... then expect them to go further!!
I completely agree. Spike is an incredible comedian and sorely missed.
Is this the first movie where "HE HE, TIDDIES!" isn't said?
I'm surprised Emily didn't say something else in place of it at the noodle-ty scene. 😄
Though there is one scene where "He, he tiddies" is the most appropriate response
I went to Tunisia on honeymoon and ended up going round where some of this was filmed ( went to some star wars locations as well )
I have been waiting for SUMM reaction to this movie since quite some time and enjoyed it now a lot.
@Gerald H Actually it was hosted by Tim Rice, not Harold Wilson.
"Come now. The leading figure in this film... What is it? Jesus Christ. He's quite clearly a lampoon of the comic messiah himself - our lord, John Cleese. Even the initials, JC, are exactly the same." 😆
I love the alien scene. While it seems pretty inexplicable now, at the time it was a topical reference: Star Wars came out two years earlier.
Thanks for the reply.
you missed out the most iconic line:
BRIAN'S MUM: He's not the Messiah, he's a very naughty boy
9:03 the only thing missing here was for the editors to pause the reaction recording, put the “rotating lines” loading symbol on your forehead and add in the dial up modem sound effect…
When you said Jesus's brother, I think you were thinking of Wholly Moses starring Dudley Moore as Moses brother who hated living in his shadow. It came out a year later and not as good but has some moments.
You guys cracking yourselves up over the noodle-ty was the best.
All I have to say around my family to get a laugh is "he has a wife you know?"
Suggested name for Matthew: Matinee Maestro
It's so good to see some love for The Meaning of Life! It gets lost as 'the other Python movie' so often.
And: Archmage of the silver screen
Something tells me the "full frontal noodle-ty" is going to a be a recurring thing from now on.
Full frontal noodlety earned a like from me. Love this movie. Great reaction.
“Now…..FU$& OFF!!!”
“How shall we fu$& off messiah?”
Best line ever!😂😂😂
My brain tends to mush them together also. But I think my favourite is definitely The Meaning of Brian too.
That alien spaceship scene gives me total Douglas Adams vibes every time. 😂
Loved the part when the spaceship turned up. The confusion in your eyes... Comedy gold! Thanks a lot for sharing!
Did anyone else notice when Biggus Dickus finally shows up in the film, and he's lounging there on the fainting couch, he can't quite close his legs all the way?
For me: 1) Life of Brian 2) Meaning of Life 3) Holy Grail
Hahaaaa….SO fun watching someone who actually “gets it “ discover this one. Thanks for sharing the fun 🤣👍💕
I love the two of you. It so welcoming and nice when once a you come into my house and make me laugh each time (or cry my eyes out).
"Noodelty"!!! Laughed my ass off when Emily called it that!! It will forever be etched in my mind. lol
I'm with Matthew on rating the major Python movies.
Love this movie! I strongly suggest react to "This is Spinal Tap" a great rock comedy 🔥🔥
*spoilers* You won't get 10 reply, but 11. Because it's better
"This Is Spinal Tap" is the best Monty Python film made by Americans.
Always helps if you've listened to metal . Stonehenge is better than most serious rock songs .
@@bhurzumii4315 D minor is the sadest key.
"Noodlety" to be the 2021 Oxford English Dictionary word of the year!
Holy Grail 9/10
Brian 8/10
Meaning Of Life 7.5/10
Live At The Hollywood Bowl 8/10
Now For Something Completely Different 7/10
In some British towns this was banned for blasphemy.
Space ship scene Parody at the height of star wars craze
Have you guys seen the film "Jabberwocky" from 1977? It isn't a Monty Python production, but it is full of Python actors, and co-written and directed by Python member Terry Gillum.
9:20 was my reaction to the space ship scene when I saw it for the first time too lol
How about Monty Python Live at the Hollywood Bowl?
You guys missed the "Jesus" cameo (when the guy was asking "crucifixion" ?) lol 13:17
