When I saw this episode I was so incredibly excited, 50% because of the show, 50% because I was imagining Angle’s reaction the whole time. This did not disappoint. So happy for your love for Tanaka, it’s contagious!
I didn't understood at first why Kanoka was heartbroken with this point, but I saw someone explaining it: Tanaka isn't just straightforward and honest with Volleyball or with his friends, but with his emotions as well. As long as he keep trying until he can do it, he actually can do it. If his heart is set with someone, he will keep trying, which means Kanoka doesn't stand a chance.
I was always thinking it was because she realized when they were sitting by the fountain and he claimed *sorry but I have my heart set on another* he was beeing honest there as well. He wasn't just beeing nervous, he just isn't interested in her.
Love Ange comment about how none of Tanaka's teammates actually thought he was lame, on the contrary they think he's awesome, never gives up, has a scary mental fortitude. It was Tanaka at that moment who thought he can't contribute to the team and who needed to get past that hurdle and he did cause he's just awesome like that, he proved everyone right and solidified what they already knew about him and his strength. One of my favorite episodes in Haikyuu for sure!

I've been waiting for this episode because of two reasons: -Obviously because Ange always stated how much he likes Tanaka, so that was a given. -But the thing that most made me excited for this is that Ange noticed Tanaka's intention to land a cross shot since the moment he saw Bokuto's one, he mentioned some times thinking that was the moment he would hit it, and that made me think "Oh you just wait for that moment..." Of course, reactions never dissapoint with you two, that's why you became two of my favorite reactors, by far!

The way I've always seen it is it's because he's always been straight forward and honest like she thought right before she said she got her heart broken. So when he told her his heart was set on another that's what he meant. If she had a chance he would have told her or at least not flat out rejected her. So she knows that even though he taught her to keep trying for things she wants, this wasn't something she could apply that to.
Tanakas childhood friend saying "she really had her heart broken" has big meaning here. Ever since her childhood she knows tanaka is not the type to give up, the last time when she almost confessed, tanaka said her that he loves someone else (ie kyoko) but now even when she saw tanaka at his lowest didn't give up until he achieved what he wanted, she knew that she has no chance on him and she knows that he's not the type to give up on the women he likes. Truly amazing but also heart breaking 😢

Tanaka's good character was shown too in the way he didn't pursue Kanoka just because he knows he has a chance because she likes him. He didn't take advantage of the situation because he does not just want a girlfriend. He actually genuinely likes Kiyoko. Ennoshita also mentioned that while Tanaka comes across strong towards Kiyoko, he respects her boundaries and will stop if Kiyoko tells him to. He's that great of a guy. He stays being one of my favorite Haikyuu!! characters. Looking forward to your reactions to the rest of the series!
I don't even know what to say about this episode. This episode is one of my favorites in all of anime ( the only one which comes close to this is ep 22, " Goodbye, Beautiful World " from Run With The Wind ). The setup was so subtle, but the impact was a nuclear bomb. This moment goes so hard because it's like you have known a guy for ages. He is the definition of sunshine to you. You have never seen him cry, hell you think he can never cry. But one day, you find him bawling....tearing up harder than you ever have...that breaks you. You think to yourself, " This guy who I have known for ages....I.... never thought he could do this..." . Freaking Haikyuu....makes you cry all the time.... His name is Ryuunousuke Tanaka! Remember it!❣️ Also, RIP my pillow that died in the battle. Bro was a true comrade😔

I fucking love how excited Bokuto is for Tanaka LOL. It’s heart warming that, yes it’s a competition, but that doesn’t stop the overall love for the sport and support for each other!
Even better that Tanaka isn't one of the a Karasuno members that Bokuto is more familiar with, so there's no closeness bias there, but he sees how much effort he's putting on his plays and he feels his struggle so he can't help but cheer! It's so awesome.
It's really awesome to see people having a similar reaction to Tanaka's moment as they do to Tsukukki's moment in season 3. Both, to me, are equally amazing.
This is an outstanding episode, we don't have to talk about that I guess haha But there are a few things worthy to mention about this. First, I just love how his depression and mental stress is portrayed here, Tanaka is spiraling towards negativity so he starts to project everything happening around him to himself. Noya went for the receive, to keep Tanaka free for offense, Tsukki set the ball to Asahi coming from the backline because he had a higher chance of scoring that way, but for Tanaka it all looked like they didn't trust him and he started to feel bad about himself. Very realistic depiction of how our brain works in times like this. And then the whole Shimizu and Kanoka part. At the end, Kanoka mentions that Kanaka has always been "honest and straightforward", so him saying that there is someone else in his heart was also honest and straightforward. That's the moment she realized he really does love someone else, and that broke her heart. Now, it's important to mention that this episode gave us 2 very important scenes for the relationship between Tanaka and Shimizu. First, we learned that if Shimizu were to say stop, Tanaka would stop his approaches towards her. That's very important because that means he's not a creep or anything. And second, when Tanaka asked her to marry him, Shimizu gave him an honest and straightforward answer, she wasn't embarrassed, shocked, disgusted or anything like that. She accepted his request, thought about it and answered without blaming him for anything. I LOVE how this episode developed the characters and how it treated them. Beautiful.
I hope you guys watch Ace of Diamond next after finishing this anime. Its another sports anime but its Baseball. For me these 2 is the best sports anime. (Haikyuu and Ace of Diamond)

Yeeeeee like Shoedeeptoe said, I've been waiting for this episode in particular. Tanaka the goat. You know our boy won't be depressed for long. He's literally that friend everyone needs in their life. The episode with tsuki in season 3 where he finally stops Ushiwaka was another one. I just read the manga and holy shit if they do it justice in adapting holy shit. The two matches are literally better than any match so far in the anime.
tanaka and shimizu will be together later in the manga, there is no such thing in the anime seasons
