Many, Many years ago when I saw this technique on UA-cam, I brought up this technique with another hobbyist when we were discussing painting. We both laugh because it seems too complicated to use for small details such as Space Marine. I am glad to see that we were wrong and that it has since become a tool within our hobby toolbox.
Yeah flat surfaces come out great, complicated models would result in gaps, I did try this out on a marine and it wasnt too bad but the dipping ink is quite thick so some of the detail in the marine was lost but as always its great to try out new things and see what the results are 🙂
I wonder, if you deliberately left gaps and worked over a certain basecoat, could it result in a more camouflage pattern? Like say you had a black and green over brown for a woodland look, or used blue and grey over white for an urban/snow?
@@MiniatureHobbyist with that in mind, do you know how well these paints cover? Is there a noticeable difference between a yellow over a white base coat Vs a black one? Really cool idea btw!
Holy resolution, dude. I haven't yet got into 3D printing because I kinda have a problem with getting obsessed with projects and that realm of tech would most likely completely consume me, but I didn't even know that there are printers that can pull that off. Fascinating...
This looks brilliant. Will definitely look into dipping tanks! I think dipping before gluing the tracks on might be the go to decrease how much repainting needs doing.
Yea, I've seen this technique used for a number of moderately large objects, like guitars with wild patterns and even gun parts to get an easy, nice looking camouflage on them
It certainly looks good, but I'd appreciate a closer look to see how well the shape of the miniature is retained. In a few of the shots of the still wet inks, it seems like it's very blobby and thick, coating the surface details. In later shots when they are dried, I can't really make it out either.
Those tank designs look very similar to Warhammer 40k Epic Grot tanks - I dig it! And I was a little skeptical of how this looked as they were very glossy at first (the nature of inks, I suppose), but the dry brushing really brought it all together
Cheers bud, I was brought up on Blue Peter and take Hart so just love making and painting things and Im besotted with 3D printers, its like having a toy shop in my home lol 🙂
Wouldn't it be easier to spray the entire tank yellow and then make black and transparant swirls to create the same effect. Except that there won't be any white spots left
Scratch building models like this is what used to make Ork armies (and to a point, Chaos armies) the converter's dream. Do GW still allow scratch builds?
I feel the failed prints thingy. I got into SLA printing in June and I haven't had any failed prints since I dialed it in until late November and the last two I tried both failed, I think it's because it's too cold in the basement. I have a space heater somewhere I have to find to see if that'll help. These turned out great and I wish I would have tried these on my Catachan legs before I assembled and painted them.
One thing I’m wondering, because I always see hydro dipping used to make swirly psychedelic paint jobs, but can it be used to make a uniform coat of one single color ? As I see it, n theory, the coating should be very uniform and smooth. Of course, this wouldn’t work well on highly detailed objects like those figurines, but what if I use it to paint panels from a model car for example ? Could it be an alternative to spray paint ?
For really small magnets like the one you put in the turret of that first tank, I find it easier to just use a paperclip rather than a magnet applicator, which might have too strong a pull on the magnet. Also less risk of gluing the magnet to the applicator.
There's really no need to do that spastic swirling after ever dip. Just dip it, pull it out, add some more ink, do another dip. Another trick, for something like what you're doing here, would be to simply paint the tanks in the orangy-yellow, and then simply dip into black stripes. You'll get a much more complete paint job that way, without white spots.
Love this new method, GG ! How thick is the painting film on the model? I mean does it hide any details of the model? Also when dry is it any durable or rubs off?
man, I love those tanks ;) @dipping: really wanna try it, so thx for this video! here's 2 questions: -wouldn't a basecoat (say of yellow) solve your white-spot-problem in the first place? or maybe a different color so you could have 3 colors effectively? -how are the details, say on the gobbo-driver? I'm a bit scared that the dipping clogs the details up. is that a thing or not? again: thx for this great vid and the great inspiration! :)
Hey, do you still have the Blood Bowl game stuff? Eons of Battle is looking for stuff for the games, maybe get in touch with him? Alsowhat would a hydro-dipped first model look if you use it as a base coat to do either slap-chop or comic style?

Ive noticed recently that a lot of youtubers from Great Britain wear quite a few leather/bead/cloth/plastic bracelets. Is this a fashion thing or am i missing something. They managed to bring it back?

I'd under paint the figure first, so any gaps have colour
I wonder, if you deliberately left gaps and worked over a certain basecoat, could it result in a more camouflage pattern? Like say you had a black and green over brown for a woodland look, or used blue and grey over white for an urban/snow?
Yup that would work, there is a clear dipping ink that came with the set that would help you see the original colour 🙂

@@MiniatureHobbyist It definitely is!
Those turned out just excellent!!! The detail painting adds so much, and the drybrushing perfectly brings everything together!
Thank you so much 🙂
if you base coated them in a color you could have a third color present in the camo and wouldnt have to fix afterwards
I’ve seen electric guitars painted with that dipping method; they always looked cool to me!
It is a great technique 🙂
Yea, I've seen this technique used for a number of moderately large objects, like guitars with wild patterns and even gun parts to get an easy, nice looking camouflage on them
I started the video very reluctant, but boy was I wrong. Cool stuff!
The drybrush does bring everything together. I think the black ink is a bit too intense though, a darker grey would make it feel less cartoony.
Made me think of Bad Moonz - neat way to get those vehicles done so quickly with a nice finish.

man thats intresting. i have alot of ruins terrain which would work with marble perfectly. Thanks alot for the idea!
Yeah terrain would look great and you could get a nice marble effect 🙂
I would recommend on a project like this if you want yellow and black camo to actually undercoat in yellow so that you don't have the white spots.
love that look. nice stuff
This is a very clever technique!
Its fast and fun 🙂
Wouldn't it be easier to spray the entire tank yellow and then make black and transparant swirls to create the same effect. Except that there won't be any white spots left
Maybe you can use an eye dropper to put the paint into the water

Maybe dip the tanks before gluing the tracks.
Does the layer of film end up smoothing out any of the detail at all? these look great, just looks as though it could hide smaller details.
Thats awesome! I will order these and give it a try 👍😸
wow! those turned out awesome!

Have you tried this with smaller sub assemblies? Or masking certain areas with liquid masking stuff?
They shall be called “the Diddle Doddler Blasters”
Dud, this is rad. Thought it was gonna turn out just a fun video to watch. But I see myself totally trying this out.
My aim is to make fun videos that may be helpful to others 🙂
I would reccomend after doing your primer, doing a orange coat dip and then do a marble dip.
I thinkyou mixed too much during the marble dipping

For a name, how about the Tygerrs?
I think doing this process in sub assemblies would be great as well
I wonder if i could get a nice statue with this technique

The Caution Crew 😂
You should call them something like the Torque Tigers / Tork Tikers
And it's great camouflage if your prey/enemy can't see the difference between yellow/orange and greens.
