      Maybe even very slightly less energy when drinks are in (after the initial cooling phase, of course)? Someone correct me if I'm wrong:

    You can actually cool material with electromagnetic radiation (Lasers, in this case), they use some techniques in labs to get individual atoms to near absolute zero. Basically slowing down the atoms by hiting them on the opposite direction of their "movement", effectively cooling down the particles. Tons of power to cool a single few atoms. Imagine a "consumer" version of such a device. The power consumption alone would be prohibitive.

    Another way to rapidly chill drinks is to take a tub large enough for your drinks, an ice chest is even better, fill it with ice, pour a bunch of salt into it and then fill with water and drop your cans or bottles in. Your canned drinks will be cold in mere minutes as the salt drops the water temperature well below freezing. I've chilled wine in ten minutes that way. The only down side is having to reach in to get your drinks out. It can hurt like hell as it is far colder than just ice water.

    I love how the girl says that keeping drinks in the fridge wastes energy and uses a lot of energy. Can we mention that air is the reason that aerogel has such great insulating properties? That means if you keep your fridge generally stocked it actually doesnt have to work as hard or as long to cool down a few bottles of wine you add or just keep things cold in general. It's about the mass of cold air rushing out when you open it. Less space for air = less air to cool. Also, more cold things inside will cool that air faster and then the fridge only needs to adjust for a slight average internal temperature change rather than drastic one. I've lived in very hot places and I've lived in very cold places. You can cool your drink a lot faster with some ice and water in a large cup or bucket and agitate the water somehow. I use a vaccum stein I bought at Walmart with some ice and water in it to cool down drinks that are almost 125F to almost ice cold in about 3-5mins. I might have to replace the ice if I dont add enough and the cup I use holds about 20-22oz at best. Not to mention I've done this when the ambient temperature was 117-121F outside, and I was outside. They haven't made anything new, all they did was packaged in to be sold to morons that want to brag about having some latest and greatest gadget till they see their power bill. This is one of those "As Seen on TV" items that simply uses some gimmick or it's a novelty item. If you meet someone who has one you know where you can get some free capital to start a business and have them sign some paper giving them zero stake and promising zero return and zero money back for their investment. Make sure it's all in the fine print after their signature because they probably wont bother to read it or even look at it till down the road.

      I agree with Thunderfoot: Thermal Peltier devices are like shaded pole induction motors. They are fascinating devices, and are very practical for small, low power applications, but just aren't efficient enough, for larger applications. I've never seen a full size frostless refrigerator/freezer, that has used the principle. If you buy a new refrigerator, even today,(1/12/2020/) It will include an energy efficient compressor, and brushless DC fans for the evaporator and condenser(as opposed to shaded pole)to use the smallest amount of energy per year to keep your "beverages" cool. If thermal peltier was that efficient, it would be widely used. I do like it, because the lack of moving parts, and the ability to operate in any position. You cannot run a compressor fridge up-side-down, in fact, it's important that they are level.

    "Not using harmful refrigerants."
    Well, can it replace an entire fridge? Because if it can't, then you need to have a fridge running 24/7 in your home anyway. And you need a freezer for frozen food as well. I don't know about other people, but my ice box is like 20 times smaller than the actual freezer for food and not needing it wouldn't make me buy a smaller fridge anyway. So if this thing can't replace another thing that we need, then it would just add to the energy consumption.
    Also, I just looked at amazon and a tiny 36L freezer for $150 uses 85 watts of power. And this thing has what capacity? They showed 1 bottle, so that's 2L at best for 100-200 watts she said? That's 20 times less efficient than a tiny freezer then. So unless you're running it for less than 1h per day and it can replace you a tiny fridge or a freezer, then it won't save you any power.
    As for refrigerants, a fridge lifespan is 17 years on average and a big fridge has 185 grams of refrigerant. So that would be less than 1kg of refrigerant used up in your entire life. Also, this:
    "Environment Canada has previously assessed the ecological risks associated with the production and use of 1,3-butadiene (Environment Canada and Health Canada 2000) and found that the substance did not present risk to aquatic organisms, terrestrial plants, soil invertebrates and wildlife"
    "In this regard, blends of pure, dry "isobutane" (R-600a) (that is, isobutane mixtures) have negligible ozone depletion potential and very low global warming potential"
    So yeah, fuck you. The currently used refrigerants aren't harmful to any life forms, ozone layer or climate anyway. They're using environmental arguments to convince people to use something that's significantly LESS environmentally-friendly due to its huge power consumption.

    • @borttorbbq2556

      @@borttorbbq2556 Why though? If it's not a problem, then it's a waste of time and money to try and fight "harmful refrigerants". The ozone layer is already healing even with increasing number of people and chemicals in the world.
      The only problem with fridges is power consumption and that can be fixed along with the fossil fuels. We just need a new energy source or more efficient solar and wind power generators. Nothing needs to be done to the fridges themselves.

    • @med2904
      @med2904 4 роки тому +3

      @UCBCwiLq37W8srqMIw9xssTg by saying "fix" I don't mean carbon taxes. I mean research new technology. And in the meantime we need power to live and do research. So burning fossil fuels is inevitable.
      I literally cannot imagine how the carbon taxes can help anything... like, they're supposed to increase the price of burning fossil fuels. That's what taxes do. Doesn't matter if you put a tax directly on sales or only on carbon emission. The end consumers will have to pay it, not the companies. And everyone needs electricity in their home and gasoline in their car, so everyone will suffer.

    • @VintageToiletsRock
      @VintageToiletsRock 4 роки тому +2

      Honestly, using a fridge would hurt the environment less due to it's electrical efficiency. Moreover, refrigerants ideally should never leak, meaning they aren't all that harmful. Hell, I bet simply releasing all the refrigerant found in a refrigerator directly into the atmosphere would still beat all the CO2 the peltier fridge would pump out in order to power it given enough time.
