As a enormous Beatles fan I again, again, again and again I listened to miss Beverly. With the highest volume on the speakers, this is a blow out! What a performance, what a beautiful black & strong woman, I'm stunned! Congrats to miss Knight!
As a huge Beatles fan myself, i know exactly what you mean. Beverly certainly gives an amazing and exceptional interpretation of the song here. I've always liked her singing, but this really blew me away. Very well done Beverly!
I'll never forget the first time hearing this. Me and my work colleagues stopped working, turned the radio up with open mouths!!! 😮 Absolutely stunned. Still gives me chills.
'Twist and Shout' (TAS) is one of the most common standards played by bands or just belted out by good singers but John Lennon's vocals, on 'The Beatles' version, took the song by the scruff of the neck and made people's hair stand on end. Other attempts have ranged from good to great, but the Fab Four's version was phenomenal. I feel sorry for TAS as a song though, because first 'The Beatles' took it by the scruff neck and, years later, Beverley Knight grabbed it by the throat and squeezed out everything that makes this song so great. Phil Medley & Bert Burns, the composers, wrote TAS in 1961 and the 'Isley Brothers' recorded it, but I doubt they could have ever imagined the song as performed by Beverley Knight here. Just look at the session musicians response at the end of the song. All professional musicians and singers who know they have just witnessed something incredibly special. They knew it, and so do most of us who have commented here, on this video. As a Beatles fan, I would have loved to have heard John Lennon's reaction to her performance, but that's not to be, so I'll just enjoy this video again, because TAS has never sounded so good. Beverley Knight, 10 out of 10. Pick up your Gold Medal and wear it with pride. Just magnificent!
I must have watched Beverley's performance of this 20 times in the last twelve months - and it's brought tears to my eyes 20 times. It is simply one of the best 4 minutes of music I've heard in my entire life. I think her wonderful vocals made everyone else 'raise their game' to another level. If I'd been one of the backing singers, I swear I'd still be talking about it when I reached 90. Just wonderful.
Listen to Beverly's version of Aretha Frankin's Song "Rock Steady" that song by Aretha herself brings me to tears, my Dad beat my ass any time I got close to crying .... First time I cried in 40 years, was when I heard Aretha belt out "Rock Steady." Now classic soul music and rock 🎵 music brings me to tears often. I perceive the LORD is telling me to prepare for my Dad passing away. Glory be to God ☦️, even for the good, the bad and the ugly, for HE rules over all things. Amen. What a talent and what energy. She has enough power to light up a city. I just love it when a performer puts their guts into it, and Beverly surely does. Bravo.
Most Beatles tracks sound better when someone else covers them, but this simply knocks the original out the park and down the road. Immense performance from the best vocalist on the planet.
I have watched this countless times and never want it to end. Simply the finest rendition of the greatest rock n roll song ever. Why it has never been released as a single is incomprehensible.
OH MY!😰 Well! That's one of the greatest performances I've ever seen, of anyone singing any song! Unbelievable. Right now, she's gotta be the best in the world!😀
Picture this, a 6ft 6in man mountain reduced to a blubbering wreck. I watched it on telly and bounced around like Tigger at work the following day! Absolutely one of the best covers of any song!
She is absolutely marvellous! She is the reason, why I travel to London now and then. If you have not heard her live, you must do so, because she is even better live....
This is not just music, it is Art at its highest level ! This video is from a BBC 4 programme that asked various artists to give their take on ten pre-chosen Beatles songs in a live session,. Beverley was elected to sing last in this one incredible live outstanding performance. I have been a fan of Beverley Knight for years. This has to be her greatest live performance, certainly that I've ever seen. Twist and Shout baby!!
It wasn't 10 pre chosen Beatles songs it was a reproduction of the album ''Please please me'' to mark the 50th aniversary of it's release and recorded in the same timescale of the original album - 12 hours, in 1964.
Technically it was recorded between 11th September 1962 (because it included the already recorded “Love Me Do” and 20th February 1963. The main session was 11th February 1963. George Martin did some Piano and Celesta overdubs on 20th February 1963.
This must be the You Tube vid I have watched more than any other. Captures the essence of Beverley's soul, passion and inability to ever give less than 100% to a performance. Brilliant lady and well worth seeing live when she tours
I've just witnessed history! "Twist and Shout" in a Gospel style with a rock 'n' roll beat played with passion, and professionally filmed, this is why rock 'n' roll will never die :))) x
someone else mentioned how they end up in tears listening to this , I thought I was the only one. utter perfection from a beautiful beautiful woman. can you imagine someone like Mariah Carey trying to do this? When Britain produces class like this no one can touch it. oh yeah before I forget- Beverly marry me, please !!
mariah doesn't have the voice type to do this no, but let's not bring down other talented singers! both women are or were incredible vocalists, and this cover cements beverley as one of the best in a long time.
I just watched this on TV, and just had to come on here to hear it again. FANTASTIC! I'm old enough to remember the Beatles bringing this one out, but Beverley's version is something else! Well done.
I hope Abbey Road has got some good building insurance,...cos our Bev raised the roof on this one and then blew it off!!! Filled the building with Pure JoY!! Thanks for posting and thank you Bev Knight xxx
Beverly Knight abandons herself to the performance and what I would give to play the Hammond Organ to get that reaction. Outstanding. If you don't " get" this then you might as well give up.
I rewatched again and, I was not disappointed! Loved bev since I first heard her song shoulda woulda coulda all those many years ago and I have been a fan ever since 👌
Twist and Shout is probably the most perfect Rock and Roll song ever written. I have searched high and low for a version of it that does it justice. The Beatles did it well..But The Pitcher remixed their version to the better. Then there's this. You take perfect song and combo it with a voice like Ms. Knight's and you get Twist and Shout like it was intended to be. You should not be able to listen to it and stay still. It must make you want to move....
I'm glad to see that this excellent performance of this song brings others to tears too. I don't know why but maybe its just being watching excellence and perfection and effort to give everything by Beverly Knight, she is truly a British icon and up there with Aretha Franklin for sure......
Can watch this again and again..so amazing and really makes me cry with emotion ( i agree with Ivor! ) One of the best bits of music TV the beeb have ever produced and Chris and Stuart were superlative presenters also. More brilliant music please
first verse great, second verse fantastic, third verse blows the roof off! her 'come on, come, come on' might be the the most exciting in rock....Beverley Knight owns this song now.
OMG...We can never thank you enough for posted this MARVERLLOUUUUUS cover; Enthusiastic and cheerful,it fills me with joy,I always get in a dancing mood when I hear it.Their pleasure of playing is obvious and what to say about Beverley Knight, her performance is extraordinary ( For me,to 2.27 at 2.48,WOWWWW...the Best ) Kiss of "France"
Beverley Knight, Mick Hucknell (Anna, Go to Him) and Gabrielle Aplin (There's A Place) were the three stars that day in Abbey Road. They absolutely smashed their performances.
One of the finest voices? Bit of an understatement!!! The finest voice
As a enormous Beatles fan I again, again, again and again I listened to miss Beverly. With the highest volume on the speakers, this is a blow out! What a performance, what a beautiful black & strong woman, I'm stunned! Congrats to miss Knight!

In my book,... BEVERLEY deserves to be up there with Aretha n Tina,... Wot an awesome Soulful voice,... Love her, 👍❤️💞🎵🎵🎵😎💯
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I'm convinced anything can be a good song as long as she sings it.
I'll never forget the first time hearing this. Me and my work colleagues stopped working, turned the radio up with open mouths!!! 😮 Absolutely stunned. Still gives me chills.
Playing this in 2023... Absolutely fantastic and brings a smile to my face
Never get tired, just awesome performance, thank you Beverley 🙏

The vocal bit 2:59 - 3:03 is just fucking superb.
This woman feels music from deep down at the cellular level and gives her all to even the most basic lyrics 😮 Wow!!!❤
What a talent and what energy. She has enough power to light up a city. I just love it when a performer puts their guts into it, and Beverly surely does. Bravo.

Immense performance from the best vocalist on the planet.
You are so correct. I personally dislike the Beatles singing bit others like Beverly or Ferris Bueller or The Boss really bring it to life
I have watched this countless times and never want it to end.
Simply the finest rendition of the greatest rock n roll song ever.
Why it has never been released as a single is incomprehensible.
*Anthony Ratcliffe* ~ Same here.
I'm a massive Beatles fan. But this version of Twist and Shout is the best ever. A brilliant vocal by Beverley Knight. Lovely.
OH MY!😰 Well! That's one of the greatest performances I've ever seen, of anyone singing any song! Unbelievable. Right now, she's gotta be the best in the world!😀
The best Beatles cover cover I ever saw. What a voice, what a power Beverley has.

I can only agree . A fantastic vocal performance . She knocked out all the backing singers and just KILLED the song !!! Fabulous .
Tears of joy every time I hear this amazing performance. Beverley is a force of nature on this.
