  • Berlin, 18 February 2013 - The United Kingdom Parliament is the largest Anglophone legislative body in the world, formed in 1800 through the Act of Union between the Parliaments of Great Britain and Ireland. Its beating heart is the House of Commons, whose 650 members consider and propose laws, and scrutinise government policies.
In this lecture, the Speaker of the House of Commons, John Bercow, discusses his role and the role of the Parliament. He particularly focuses on the scrutiny of legislation, modernising procedures, and public outreach. Bercow also addresses current debates in the UK Parliament -- with the political neutrality which his role demands.
Moderated by Mark Dawson, Professor of European Law and Governance at the Hertie School of Governance.
