      Yea, but they should not include non-pretty languages such as these, they should only include the pretty languages like the Germanic / Nordic languages and the 6 modern Celtic languages and the Latin languages and Hungarian and Slovene which are the languages that are truly fun to guess and hear and see - and such hørrific śæcrílegíuous bæd words should never be included in videos, pfff, what ns!

      The gorgeous languages like Icelandic / Norse / Dutch / Faroese / Danish / Norwegian Bokmål / Gothic / Welsh / Breton / Irish / Manx / Cornish / Scottish Gaelic / Hungarian / Galician / Catalan / Portuguese / Gallo / Italian / German / Swedish / Luxembourgish / Aranese / Spanish / Guernsey / Limburgish / Walloon / Latin / Occitan / Slovene / Elfdalian / Sardinian / East Norse / Norwegian Nynorsk / Greenlandic Norse etc and the other languages based on Norwegian / French / German / Dutch / Italian etc are the languages that should be included the most - especially the magical languages like Icelandic / Norse / Dutch / Norwegian / Welsh / Breton etc which are as gorgeous as English, and all should know and learn these pretty languages, they are just too pretty not to know!

    • @thetrueoneandonlyladyprinc8038
      @thetrueoneandonlyladyprinc8038 5 місяців тому

      Re music, the Dutch and Norse and English and Norwegian and Icelandic and Faroese and German and Danish and Swedish etc languages have the best music ever, even the folk songs are usually gorgeous in these languages - and it is also the fact that the languages themselves are gorgeous, because a song will not sound good if the language it’s sung in isn’t a pretty language with mostly or almost only pretty words and a pretty and refined and poetic sound, so it makes sense that Germanic songs are always the best because Germanic languages are the prettiest and most refined and most poetic languages, and also because almost all the singers with higher voices and lighter tone and a pretty and refined timbre are from Germanic countries, and many of the songwriters from Germanic countries also have natural talent, so they tend to make pretty songs with pretty melodies, especially when it comes to Disney songs and folk songs and symphonic metal songs and techno and dubstep etc, and I highly recommend listening to the Skáld songs and the Icelandic and Norwegian and Dutch and Swedish and Danish etc versions of those Disney songs such as the original Little Mermaid songs and the Frozen / Ik Ben Vaiana / Brave etc songs and the Dutch songs about the hunchback from Notre Dame and Nightmare Before Christmas, they are so pretty and poetic and refined, and Finland also has lots of great songs such as the Nightwish songs like Amaranth / Song Of Myself / Escapist etc!

    Wow. Matthew’s knowledge of languages is jawdroppingly, scarily good, OMG. I am blown away. I get the impression that the Romanian speaker had a very strong AM-EN accent which understandably threw Matthew off, but his reason for choosing Malay over Indonesian was completely, 100% on point and incredibly observant. The Indonesian speaker also sounded like they were a heritage speaker as opposed to someone whose current first language is Indonesian.

      Honestly, should be moved to World Friends instead because there are many pretty languages included there, and no bæd / śæcrílegíuous words are included in World Friends videos, as far as I know, so they are usually fun to watch, and it would be more entertaining if there were more dudes that know a lot about languages and that can actually guess most of the languages - these videos, on the other hand, are ruíned every time by including such efd words and by including only or almost only non-pretty languages such as these that aren’t fun to guess or hear or see etc, and not even one Germanic languages, pfff, Germanic languages should always be the most included languages as they are the prettiest and most refined languages that are always fun to guess and hear and see!

      Linguistically speaking, Dari and Farsi (as well as Tajik) are both different standardised versions of the same language (Persian). This is similar to what happens with Hindi/Urdu, Serbian/Croatian/Bosnian/Macedonian, Turkish/Azerbaijani, and (arguably) Norwegian/Danish/Swedish. Honestly it should have counted. I don't know too much about the relationship between Malay and Indonesian, but I've heard that people do sometimes consider the two to also be the same language with different standard versions and there is a high degree of mutual intelligibility between the two

    I appreciate Matthew calling Shanghainese a "language" rather than a "dialect" like many of the other guessers. Shanghainese is not even the same language family as Mandarin but people think all Chinese languages are just variants on the national Mandarin (which was most based on the Beijing dialect).

    • @catinabox3048
      @catinabox3048 5 місяців тому +107

      It IS in the same language family. They are languages spoken by the Han Chinese, that are linguistically and lexically related. Any Mandarin speaker will be able to guess that it comes from China after asking her three questions and listening to her answers. We may not be able to understand what she's saying, but to say it's not in the same language family is just incorrect. I would liken its similarities to Spanish and Portuguese-which are different languages but are both Romance languages derived from Latin, and it doesn't take much for a speaker of one to understand the other. They're not mutually comprehensible, but they're super related to the extent that the grammar is maybe 90% similar and the words are mostly etymologically related. All you need to do is master the pronunciation and the remaining 10% of the grammar for basic comprehension.
      There ARE Chinese languages that aren't part of the same language family as Mandarin. For example, Uyghur, Tibetan, Manchu, and Hmong are not related to the Han Chinese languages. But Hakka (including Taiwanese), Wu (including Shanghainese), and Yue (including Cantonese) are all Han Chinese languages and thus very related to Mandarin. To be fair, some people do refer to each of these categories as "families" because they each contain multiple varieties, but varieties within each of these categories are mutually comprehensible, so I would hardly consider those to be different languages. So Cantonese, for example, should linguistically be considered the same language as all other Yue varieties while Shanghainese should be considered the same language as all other Wu varieties. Yue and Wu are two languages that, along with Mandarin, make up the Han Chinese languages which all belong to the Sinitic language family.

      @@PersonZinrooas a Shanghainese, 上海閒話 is not based on Mandarin. Especially since mandarin is a younger language compared to the Wu dialects. Shanghainese/ wu is a dialect based on a social political standpoint but a language based on linguistic standpoint. Linguists note that while there is some vocab overlap, there is only 29% lexical similarity between Shanghainese and Mandarin. Compared to English and German which have a lexical similar of 60% yet are considered different languages. We speak both so we can easily detect the similarities, but speakers of one or the other will struggle. It’s more than just an accent change.

    Oh Matthew is really good, he recognizes Austronesian languages and our shared vocabulary like “lima” or the number five 😊 And he’s right, 17:17 “eight” is “lapan” in Malay and “delapan” in Indonesian because the latter came from an older Austronesian root, but that’s not enough because we often shortened the way we say our numbers in everyday life.
    One of the things he could’ve done to tell the difference between the two without knowing the vocabulary is to notice whether they roll their Rs or not, because rolling their Rs is a sure tell that someone is Indonesian. Of course there are other ways to figure this out, but it would require some knowledge in both languages or the culture, including the food.

    I would love to take one of Matthew's music classes! I've found that learning language through music is so helpful. While I can only speak English fluently (working on getting my Italian back to a proficient level after years of disuse!), I can recognize a lot of languages! And if not the language itself, I am pretty good at knowing the general region the area is from. A lot of that came from music

    Ahhhhh as a massive Eurovision fan, Matthew is on point with his comment on Romanian music industry. Romania has so many talented artists but the music industry lacks any kind of vision or direction and many Eurovision fans are afraid Romania might be the next country to drop out of Eurovision because there's no interest in ESC. This year Theodor showed Europe how talented he is and his live vocals were superb but the lackluster song, choreography and styling buried all that and made the performance very unremarkable. Comparing to their neighbour Moldova, which is often one of my favourites, they are the real wild card of ESC.
