Actually, Neil is correct but the math is slightly incorrect. The effect of centrifugal force on your weight is minimal. At the equator, you would weigh slightly less (perhaps a fraction of a percent less) than you would at the poles due to this centrifugal force effect. The difference in weight due to the centrifugal force at the equator compared to the poles is relatively small and would not have a significant impact on your measured weight. If you weigh 190 pounds (approximately 86.18 kilograms) at the North or South Pole, your weight at the equator would be slightly less due to the effect of centrifugal force. At the equator, you would weigh about 0.5% less than you would at the poles. So, if you weigh 190 pounds at the poles, at the equator, you would weigh approximately 189 pounds (or roughly 85.73 kilograms). Again, it's important to emphasize that this difference is very small and would not be noticeable in your everyday life or on a typical bathroom scale. Your weight can also fluctuate throughout the day due to factors like hydration and meals, and this variation would likely be more significant than the effect of the Earth's rotation.
But didn't Neil explain that centrifugal force isn't real? He stated it was fake so how is he now using it as the basis for his weight difference b*s? This guy contradicts himself throughout the entire video and many other videos he's in. I simply cannot grasp how people don't pick up on it because it's so blatant. However I agree with you on what you are saying because centrifugal force is not fake and the weight difference is very minimal not 190 pounds to 185 pound depending on if you're at the equator or further away from it. If that was the case then why don't they mine gold and only sell it at the furthest point away from the equator because it would weigh significantly more -according to Neil- and would fetch you more money??? He said it isn't your mass that changes but your weight lol 😂 ummm ya! And air pockets too!
@@greghoughton7877 it's not really a "force", but it is a real thing which affects your weight. That is what he said which is correct. Also, he clarified this answer in a different podcast. If you're in the north pole, the center of gravity is closer, however, not everything of the earth's mass would be pulling you, but the disk that is below you that will cover the earth, which means it wont include the bulge on the equator. When you're in the equator, the entire disk (circumference) will be pulling on you, so despite being slightly away from the center of gravity, the entirety of earth's mass would be pulling you, which kinda evens it out. Add the miniscule centrifugal force and you get equal weight.
I think a common misconception about the moment in the Superman movie that many people have not considered is that Superman did not physically reverse the rotation of the earth by flying around it so hard and so fast that he actually affected the rotation. It isn't explained with any sort of explicit in-film explication, so it is just my assumption, but I think what was really happening is that he was traveling faster than light, and traveling so fast that he began to travel back in time. This is displayed in the film as the earth slowing, and then reversing, and the filmmaker even shows previously shot footage literally rewinding and being undone. So, as stated, the earth was not actually being slowed down, it was just the movie's way of rewinding through time. That opens a whole can of worms about time travel as it relates to traveling faster than light and I'd probably be just as fascinated to hear you talk about that particular subject, but I did think that the above theory was worth positing to you and hopefully it will change your opinion of the film itself as well as the potential scientific questions surrounding it.

These videos are so instructive and so entertaining, I just cannot praise them enough. So many thanks to Chuck and Neil. Only one complaint: you don't do a video every day, or better, every hour.
Let's clear up the ride confusion. Neil didn't give enough information at 02:50 to narrow it down precisely, but it could be one of three rides: The Rotor: This was a circular indoor room with a single verticle and circular wall. Riders stand up against the wall and the whole room begins to spin. You can't perceive the spin as there are no windows. You can only feel it. At some point the floor drops out and you are left in mid-air pinned against the wall by the centrifugal force. After some time they return the floor to its original position under your feet and slow the ride to a stop at which point you disembark. The Round-Up: This was a circular outdoor ride with "stalls" where each person stands. Each stall has a harness to keep you in and metal bars on each side to hold on to. When the ride starts it spins horizontally and you begin to feel the centrifugal force. Then the operator tilts the entire ride up to about a 45 degree angle. Thus, part of the time you are facing the ground but held firmly against the outside of the ride. After adjusting the tilt and speeds multiple times, the operator returns the ride to horizontal, brings it to a stop, and you disembark. The Gravitron (as well as other names like Starship etc): This was a ride in the shape of diamond resting on its pointy tip that was painted to looked like a spaceship or spinning top. You go into the ride and lay on angled (approximately 30 - 45 degrees) pads along the perrimeter of the ride. The operator starts to spin the entire ride and you feel the centrifugal force more and more as it speeds up. At some point the pads slide up to the ceiling with you attached as they are on some sort of rails. Thus, you are effectively suspended with no attachment to the ground. Eventually, the ride is slowed and your pad (and you) slide back down to the ground. When the rotation stops you disembark. All three of these rides are mentioned multiple times in the comments as the definitive ride Neil was talking about. My opinion is that he was referring to The Rotor based on the way he describes it. I think we can eliminate the Round-Up, because he talks about being against a wall, but that doesn't fit the Round-up with just has a metal cage on the perimeter, not anything that can be described as a wall. Also, if he was referring to the gravitron, I think he would have mentioned the motion and angle of the pads. I'm lucky because all three of these rides were at my local state fair during my youth and I was able to experience them all, often in the same day. They removed The Rotor sometime in my teens and I havn't seen it since, but the Round-Up and Gravitron are still ubiquitous at fairs all over.
I dunno why people call him condescending and why they complain that he talks over others. The man is just so passionate about science. It's honestly just so contagious
You have a high tolerance for stupidity. I'm just guessing here, but I'll bet real scientists bore you because they don't talk like Colgate commercials....
I remember doing the math for this about 30 years ago when I started travelling regularly to and from the US. Someone had spotted that if you took the take off time and added or subtracted the flight time (depending on whether you were flying east or west) you did not get the actual time at your destination. Off course I first had to work out the correction for the fact that the aircraft flew on a great circle. Luckily by that time I had a Macintosh to do the calculations for me! Of course Concorde had another issue which was that it was flying about 50% faster than the rotation. At the time I didn't think about the weight thing. That was interesting to hear about. Neil is a fascinating explainer. There was a great BBC Science documentary called "Orbit" in which Dr Helen Czerski and Kate Humble explained about the Coriolis Force effecting the major wind systems. Warm air rises at the equator and as the Earth rotates it move North East or South South East, cools, falls to sea level and keeps moving Eastward. At sea level this shows up as the Trade Winds. Humble did a demo by parachuting from about 15K feet above Arizona with a GPS tracker. They had picked a day with almost no wind and sure enough her track moved Eastward.
This question always made me stay up for hours. I’m thankful for Neil making it easier for me to understand and finally give me the answer I’ve been questioning for years. Thank you Neil ❤️
Get some melatonin for this one. Why does the earth or any orbiting body spin? It's because they always have is the answer I always get. Why then does Venus spin opposite then? Sleep well.
That would only work if you were as obese as the world record for the fattest person. A typical person only loses between 1/2 pound and 1 pound by moving to Ecuador.

Um as I recall .that exit trajectory was rare...j.w.t. passed the moon's orbit in like 5 hours... Apollo took 5 days... bigger rocket allowed a direct path out of here...zoom zoom...
I doubt it's what you are saying! The real reason is that Equator is closer to space than northern latitudes. Let say the highest mountain on earth from earths center, is not Everest, but a mountain in Equator, which is 1 mile less than Everest, measured from se level. Centrifugal forces have nothing to do with it because once the lift off happens, centrifugal no longer applies.
Thanx Neil. The ride that I remember was the Tilt-A Whorl. A large circular wheel about 40 feet diameter that would rotate to speed, then raise up to about a 45 degree angle. While at "full tilt" one lady as we say , lost her cookies. I remember seeing the "cookies" take an independent trajectory as several of us received a dose of "cookies". I have often pondered the math that would explain the "cookie course". thank you.
You are describing the Round-Up. The Til-a Whirl had small circular shaped cars that sat 3 or 4 people. The cars would spin around but they were never raised up like you describe.
@@mariogarcia1803 How do maps in Spanish distinguish between Ecuador and the equator? Is it called "Linea del Ecuador" for the equator, and "República de Ecuador" for the country?
I think there is a slight mistake at 10:36 - 190 Pounds on the north pole would not be 185 pounds on the equator. According to all sources and my own calculation the difference in weight would be something around 0.5% - 189.05 pounds would be the correct value - so approximately just one pound difference.
Nope....not even that! 185 Kilos of Gold poured into bars at Quito, Ecaudor (0° 9' South Latitude) will NOT WEIGH 190 Kilos (Kneel DeFraud's 2.7027% delta, nor your ±.5% delta) at the London Bullion Market Association ("LBMA") at 51° 30' North Latitude. 1 Kilo = ±32.15075 Troy Ounces LBMA spot on Dec 22, 2022 is ±$1,820 / Troy Oz 185 Kilos = $10,825,157.53 USD 185 x 1.005 = 185.925 Kilo = 10,879,283.31 USD Delta = $54,125.78 .....not a chance this is reality, otherwise we would have Time Zones AND Money Zones to compensate for adjustments.....yet, we only have Time Zones.
As I heard him saying that, it sounded like he was just guessing on the difference. Because otherwise, why would it be such a well rounded number? (5lb.) I think the main point he was trying to make is that there is a difference.
He could be closer to right if you factor in elevation. New York city is at sea level, but much of Ecuador is up in the mountains. Obviously the higher the elevation, the less you would weigh.

@R Voit I'm talking about the constant aerial motion at about 40,000 feet in the air. Of course I can feel it moving when it's pulling away from the gate, when it's taking off and when it's coming in for landing. That's all acceleration/deceleration.
Neil's math was a little bit off. If Chuck weighs 190lb the difference in his weight between New York (?) and the equator would be a lot less than 5lb. Between the north pole and the equator would be about 10oz. There would also be a slight further reduction in Chuck's weight due to the earth being slightly oblate, fatter around the equator. This means that he would be further from the earth's centre at the equator compared to at the pole.

The ride that Neil was referring to is called "The Rotor." People would stand inside it with their backs against the wall of the ride. It would be very, very similar to standing inside a wine cask withithout its lid, with your back against the wall of the cask. The ride would start to rotate or spin around, if you will. When the rotation reached a certain speed the floor would drop down but the people inside the Rotor would be pinned against the wall and not fall straight down, even though their feet were not longer touching the floor because the floor dropped down from underneat them. Unfortunately, amusements parks around the country that had this ride removed them starting in the late 70s. The ride made it difficult to breathe for some people and others, who were suseptable to motion sickness, shall I say, lost the hot dog and cotton candy they ingested moments before, this tragedy befalling on other innocent riders.

No, this is due to simple gravity. Outer planets in the solar system have to move faster in order to maintain such a high orbit. If they slowed down, they would fall to a lower (closer) orbit. It's the same with stars in a rotating galaxy. The farther from the center, the faster you have to move.
@@hrgwea That sounds reasonable, but it isn't correct. The planets in the outer solar system actually move slower. Mercury orbits faster than Earth. It is true that slowing down the outer planets would make them fall to lower orbits, but the effect of gravity outweighs the slow down, and the planets actually move faster. It's confusing, but that's how it works.
@ It's the opposite. Stars near the edge are moving FASTER than the law of gravity predicts they should move given the "visible" mass of the galaxy. This is because the galaxy's true mass is greater and with a more even distribution than its visible matter.
@@DANGJOS You are correct. Farther objects orbit at lower speeds because there's less gravitational pull. I was trying to explain the case of stars in the galaxy with a simpler case, but made a mistake in the analogy. In a galaxy, the gravitational pull doesn't diminish as you move away from the center (as it occurs in a solar system). It actually increases. That's why starts at the edge move faster. A correct analogy to compare with would be a single planet, in which the strongest gravitational pull is at the surface of the planet. As you move to the center of the planet, the gravity decreases.

Actually, Neil is correct but the math is slightly incorrect. The effect of centrifugal force on your weight is minimal. The difference in weight due to the centrifugal force at the equator compared to the poles is relatively small and would not have a significant impact on your measured weight. These videos are so instructive and so entertaining, I just cannot praise them enough. So many thanks to Chuck and Neil. Only one complaint: you don't do a video every day, or better, every hour.
Let's clear up the ride confusion. Neil didn't give enough information at 02:50 to narrow it down precisely, but it could be one of three rides:
The Rotor: This was a circular indoor room with a single verticle and circular wall.

Centrifugal forces have nothing to do with it because once the lift off happens, centrifugal no longer applies.
every rocket use this principle by launching near equator and going in the right direction

I have often pondered the math that would explain the "cookie course". thank you.

1 Kilo = ±32.15075 Troy Ounces
LBMA spot on Dec 22, 2022 is ±$1,820 / Troy Oz
185 Kilos = $10,825,157.53 USD
185 x 1.005 = 185.925 Kilo = 10,879,283.31 USD
Delta = $54,125.78
.....not a chance this is reality, otherwise we would have Time Zones AND Money Zones to compensate for adjustments.....yet, we only have Time Zones.
I agree Tyson is wrong about how much the equator effects your weight.
I think for all who disagree, Go and get a bachelor's in computer science, then goto Harvard for Earth and political studies where you should achieve a Masters...
The difference between the equator and the poles is about 0.5 %, so roughly half of that (0.25 %) between the equator and New York.

Edit: 1:20
16:46 Is this why Galaxies at the outer edges move faster?, we can think of them as just cosmic "air pockets".
A Blackhole is just a rotating Storm...
