Neil deGrasse Tyson Explains the Earth's Rotation

  • We know the Earth rotates…but why can’t we feel it? On this StarTalk explainer, Neil deGrasse Tyson and comic co-host Chuck Nice investigate centrifugal force and the Earth’s rotation.
    What is centrifugal force? Well, if you’ve been on a carnival ride, you probably know. However, Neil tells us why there is really no such thing as centrifugal force. Find out why you weigh less when you’re closer to the equator.
    You’ll learn what speed Earth has to be rotating so that the centrifugal force balances out the gravitational force causing you to hover just above the surface in what Chuck calls “super-low Earth orbit.” All that, plus, Chuck uses this to invent a new diet.

      God created the electromagnetic environment of earth unique to earth third planet from the sun. Perfectly placed by God in this vast finite Universe . God uses small things to confound the prideful who deny Him. Neal is correct that centrifugal force is not what keeps us bound to earth.
      We are the only livable planet in the whole of this finite universe. Neal also denies the worldwide flood that has plenty of evidence worldwide. Petrified trees standing upright in earths geological columns of layered sentiment that also proves the worldwide flood along with the Pangea split and the tectonic plates that began when God brought judgement upon the wicked in the days of Noah. God shows exactly how he set in motion the worldwide flood. First the water under the crest of the earth burst forth sending chunks of earth into the sky in certain regions. God did deliver Noah’s Ark to the Ararat Mountain range. God set Earth to rotate around the sun in a 24 hr timescape. Like I said Neal plays the jovial psuedo scientist. God Numerology is also code throughout His Word verifying all that he Has made and spoken into existence. Repentant sinner God knows before they are even Born. I will die knowing the Creator Savior and Judge who is Holy Righteous and Just . God judges sin. Their is not other That reigns from eternity and Sent Jesus to die and rise from the dead showing the saints the risen bodies they will inherit by the King of Kings and Lord of Lords.
      Those who hate the Rock of Salvation
      Deny the Lord of Lords.
      The chief cornerstone of the called out ones.

He's always funny (him saying his mother is Ricky Ricardo legitimately made me laugh out loud) but the intelligence he displays in every episode that he's on really just impresses me. Also, idk if I'm just worse than average but his memory always astonishes me too. So often Neal will be explaining something and Chuck accurately shouts out some scientific something or another that he learned on some episode from years ago. I forget what I lean each episode damn near as soon as it ends lol. I just like him a lot.

      Kneel DeFraud is lying to the world, and he knows it!
      There is ZERO CHANCE that 185 Kilos of Gold poured into bars at Quito, Ecuador, at 0° Latitude weighs 190 Kilos at the London Bullion Market Association at 51.5° North Latitude----ZERO CHANCE!...He's lying!
      With Gold Spot at $1,830 USD / Troy Oz on Dec 21, 2022, and 1 Kilo = 32.15 Troy Ozs, 5 Kilos is worth about $295,000 USD-----If Kneel DeFraud was telling the truth, Earth would have Time Zones based on Longitudinal Distance from the Prime Meridian at Greenwich, England (which we do) as well as Money Zones based on the weight of Gold, Silver, Platinum, etc., for every degree, minute & second North & South of the Equator----which we do not have. I can't believe I have to correct Neil like this but here goes. Santa does indeed start his sleigh ride skinny as you stated. But remember, as he adds on the pounds from all the cookies, he's off loading pounds of toys. By the end of his trip, the sleigh has no toys, so the reindeer see no difference in their work load due to Santa adding on all the pounds from cookies and milk.

While at "full tilt" one lady as we say , lost her cookies. I remember seeing the "cookies" take an independent trajectory as several of us received a dose of "cookies". I have often pondered the math that would explain the "cookie course". thank you.

      I doubt it's what you are saying! The real reason is that Equator is closer to space than northern latitudes. Let say the highest mountain on earth from earths center, is not Everest, but a mountain in Equator, which is 1 mile less than Everest, measured from se level. Centrifugal forces have nothing to do with it because once the lift off happens, centrifugal no longer applies.

    The ride that Neil was referring to is called "The Rotor." People would stand inside it with their backs against the wall of the ride. It would be very, very similar to standing inside a wine cask withithout its lid, with your back against the wall of the cask. The ride would start to rotate or spin around, if you will. When the rotation reached a certain speed the floor would drop down but the people inside the Rotor would be pinned against the wall and not fall straight down, even though their feet were not longer touching the floor because the floor dropped down from underneat them. Unfortunately, amusements parks around the country that had this ride removed them starting in the late 70s. The ride made it difficult to breathe for some people and others, who were suseptable to motion sickness, shall I say, lost the hot dog and cotton candy they ingested moments before, this tragedy befalling on other innocent riders.

    I remember doing the math for this about 30 years ago when I started travelling regularly to and from the US. Someone had spotted that if you took the take off time and added or subtracted the flight time (depending on whether you were flying east or west) you did not get the actual time at your destination. Off course I first had to work out the correction for the fact that the aircraft flew on a great circle. Luckily by that time I had a Macintosh to do the calculations for me! Of course Concorde had another issue which was that it was flying about 50% faster than the rotation. At the time I didn't think about the weight thing. That was interesting to hear about. Neil is a fascinating explainer.
    There was a great BBC Science documentary called "Orbit" in which Dr Helen Czerski and Kate Humble explained about the Coriolis Force effecting the major wind systems. Warm air rises at the equator and as the Earth rotates it move North East or South South East, cools, falls to sea level and keeps moving Eastward. At sea level this shows up as the Trade Winds. Humble did a demo by parachuting from about 15K feet above Arizona with a GPS tracker. They had picked a day with almost no wind and sure enough her track moved Eastward.

    I think there is a slight mistake at 10:36 - 190 Pounds on the north pole would not be 185 pounds on the equator. According to all sources and my own calculation the difference in weight would be something around 0.5% - 189.05 pounds would be the correct value - so approximately just one pound difference.

    • @DesertSky928
      @DesertSky928 Рік тому

      Nope....not even that!
      185 Kilos of Gold poured into bars at Quito, Ecaudor (0° 9' South Latitude) will NOT WEIGH 190 Kilos (Kneel DeFraud's 2.7027% delta, nor your ±.5% delta) at the London Bullion Market Association ("LBMA") at 51° 30' North Latitude.
      1 Kilo = ±32.15075 Troy Ounces
      LBMA spot on Dec 22, 2022 is ±$1,820 / Troy Oz
      185 Kilos = $10,825,157.53 USD
      185 x 1.005 = 185.925 Kilo = 10,879,283.31 USD
      Delta = $54,125.78
      .....not a chance this is reality, otherwise we would have Time Zones AND Money Zones to compensate for adjustments.....yet, we only have Time Zones.

    I think a common misconception about the moment in the Superman movie that many people have not considered is that Superman did not physically reverse the rotation of the earth by flying around it so hard and so fast that he actually affected the rotation. It isn't explained with any sort of explicit in-film explication, so it is just my assumption, but I think what was really happening is that he was traveling faster than light, and traveling so fast that he began to travel back in time.
    This is displayed in the film as the earth slowing, and then reversing, and the filmmaker even shows previously shot footage literally rewinding and being undone. So, as stated, the earth was not actually being slowed down, it was just the movie's way of rewinding through time.
    That opens a whole can of worms about time travel as it relates to traveling faster than light and I'd probably be just as fascinated to hear you talk about that particular subject, but I did think that the above theory was worth positing to you and hopefully it will change your opinion of the film itself as well as the potential scientific questions surrounding it.

    Actually, Neil is correct but the math is slightly incorrect. The effect of centrifugal force on your weight is minimal. At the equator, you would weigh slightly less (perhaps a fraction of a percent less) than you would at the poles due to this centrifugal force effect. The difference in weight due to the centrifugal force at the equator compared to the poles is relatively small and would not have a significant impact on your measured weight. If you weigh 190 pounds (approximately 86.18 kilograms) at the North or South Pole, your weight at the equator would be slightly less due to the effect of centrifugal force. At the equator, you would weigh about 0.5% less than you would at the poles. So, if you weigh 190 pounds at the poles, at the equator, you would weigh approximately 189 pounds (or roughly 85.73 kilograms).
    Again, it's important to emphasize that this difference is very small and would not be noticeable in your everyday life or on a typical bathroom scale. Your weight can also fluctuate throughout the day due to factors like hydration and meals, and this variation would likely be more significant than the effect of the Earth's rotation.

    • @milendimitrov8535
      @milendimitrov8535 2 місяці тому +1

      yep, to be exact centrifugal force on the equator is 0.0345N , ~0.35% of 9.8 , in NYC is 0.02N , ~ 0.2% of g.
