He owns his own production company and is free to be totally creative -- he suffered from depression and this song portrays some of the feelings he experienced during that time. He was formerly in the group Wanna One.
100% came here to say that you need to watch the music video!!!! The performance version is great, but honestly, the music video for this song is one of my all-time favorites. DITTO! Easily my most watched K-pop music video. There are actually moments in the MV that remind me of some of my favorite horror/thriller movies (The Babadook, and Ginger Snaps). I don’t think they are intentional references - they just happen to be similar. Oh! And the green-blue setting with everyone wearing white reminds me of the movie Ex Machina. P.S. Ever since this MV released, I’ve been wanting to make a video that emulates the connections I see. Just gotta get videos of the movies and then storyboard everything.

The masks makes sense if you understand what the song is about. The MV, lyrics, choreography and even the costumes are all related to the concept of the song. This is the performance video that is just showcasing the dancing. The reaction to this song will never be complete if you do not know the concept and the meaning of this song.

This song and the original MV is still one of the best songs and MVs in all of kpop. The storytelling of it all is so perfect and the creation an overall masterpiece. It's pure art. If you watch the original MV and read the lyrics that is.
