    2015 vw Jetta shutters went out. $2000 later they are fixed. How much fuel mileage did it save me over the life of the vehicle??? Not $2000 I’m willing to bet. BS!!!!!!

      I know,,, On the freeway let's block half of the radiator from cooling. BRILLIANT IDEA💡

    It may sound good on paper but in real life, the little time it saves to warm up and fuel savings are not worth the complexity and cost of these devises when they go south.

    • @hanynowsky
      @hanynowsky 2 місяці тому

      @@mouselt1 you are correct. Until you go spend a year in norway where they even install aftermarket electric coolant heaters that warm up the coolant even when the engine is shut.
      I second you, if the climate not freezing cold. But these devices can reduce the coefficient of Drag by as much as 0.2. which is significant for fuel savings.

    Great explanation. However it is just one more crap thing that can and will go bad and cost people money to get repaired. Every time we turn around something else is added that can and will break and cost money to fix. What ever happened to the term (KISS) keep it simple stupid. Less crap on the car that can break the less it will cost to operate.

    Wait, wouldn't them be closed increase drag since it is essentially a wall now? I'm confused

    • @hanynowsky
      @hanynowsky 2 місяці тому

      No. It s the opposite.
      Drag increases when in enters the inner radiator area and creates a heavy turbulence which pushes the car rearward.
      When the active flap is closed the air flow is directed to the hood/bonnet and the bottom bumper lip, increasing downforce and reduducing drag.
      The closed flap acts like a nose.
      But when open acts like a mouth.

    • @jakejones5736
      @jakejones5736 2 місяці тому +1

      @@hanynowsky Kind of. When open, there is indeed all kinds of turbulence due to the resistance of everything in the engine compartment. When closed, the shutters simply redirect that airflow over the top of the streamlined body of the vehicle, thus reducing drag.

      I just replied to another responder. Here is an easy way to understand this:
      Consider two rivers. One goes straight, but with a lot of boulders and large rocks. The other makes an S-curve but has no obstructions. Which do you think will more easily let the water pass through? That's right, hands down it would be the second one.
      The reason why is not only does the first one have SEVERAL "walls", but the turbulence from all the various points of deflected water interact with each other causing even further drag. Hope this helps. 🙂

    P059F code 2019 Nissan Altima. Shutters were halfway open when parked. After start up, they fully cycled open & close several times, then remained fully open. Hot day and the engine was already warm. For what it's worth, had the same code about a year ago. Disconnected and reconnected electrical harness. Terminals were shiny new, no obstruction no damage. Code went away on its own. When it came back recently, I assumed it was the same issue and did not check it for a couple weeks. When I finally checked it, I found half a styrofoam cup holding the shutters open. Any ideas?
