  • The Common green iguana is a large tree-dwelling lizard🦎 native to Central and South America. Due to the species’ relatively docile nature and striking green appearance, it is a popular exotic pet. Hong Kong imported 129,300 Common green iguanas between 2015 and 2021 - making the city the second largest importer globally, receiving a quarter of Common green iguanas in international trade.🤯
Many people may not know that iguanas are long-lived, up to 25 years. When fully grown, they can weigh up to 8 kilograms and be up to 2 meters in length. They require specific living environment, including ample sunlight ☀️ and specific temperatures 🌡️. In the narrow captive environments of Hong Kong, it may not be possible to provide them with suitable space, which can lead to health issues. Releasing them into the wild also poses a threat to local species.
We urge everyone to learn about the potential dangers of owning exotic pets, concerning their needs and suitability. We also urge the government to tighten pet trade regulations, establish a list of allowed exotic pets for trade, and protect wildlife. Learn more👉 wwf.hk/exoticpettrade_en
