  • The Eagle Slide on Giant Mountains West Face is consider to be one of the Steeper and more beautiful Slides in the Adirondack Park. The slide headwall ascends about 1000 feet in a half mile and It was by far the steepest landslide I have ever climbed! We were on all fours the whole time and I believe it held a grade of about 45 to 50° from the bottom to the top of the slide. The potential for danger on this one is definitely high! I specifically purchased La Sportiva TX4 approach shoes for this climb and I was happy with my decision!
The hike starts out at the Roaring Brook Trailhead for Giant Mountain. You will ascent 1.75 miles and find a cairn on the left and a slight herd path. You follow this down for like what feels like 200 feet and drop into the Roaring Brook Drainage. You follow the main drainage up to the base of Eagle slide. When I was out there, there were so many fresh landslides from the previous storm that we went up the wrong tributary a couple different times, but with GPS navigation and a rout plotted on my Garmin Fenix 7X Sapphire Solar, we were able to realize the mistake quickly and get back in the correct drainage. You are in the Roaring Brook drainage for at least 1 mile before hitting the headwall of the Eagle Slide. We chose a straight path from the bottom of the rubble field through the Eagles Head to the top! We summited Giant Mountain 3 hours from the car and were back at the car in 5 Hours for one of the best five hour sessions you can have on the mountain!
