It is generally safe to open a kiln when the temperature drops below 200°F (93°C). Opening the kiln any earlier, especially when it’s still hot, can cause thermal shock to the pieces inside, leading to cracks or breakage. Patience is key in waiting for the kiln to cool down properly before removing your work.! Thanks for watching !!!
Hey Kev , It’s important not to open your kiln lid until the temperature drops to around 125°C (or 250°F) for several reasons: 1. Thermal Shock: Pottery pieces are vulnerable to cracking due to rapid changes in temperature. If the kiln is opened too soon, the sudden influx of cooler air can cause uneven cooling, leading to fractures in the pottery. 2. Glaze Stability: Glazes continue to mature and solidify as the kiln cools. Opening the kiln too early can disrupt the final glaze appearance, leading to dull or incomplete finishes.
