Potter’s Tip “ repetition matters”
Переглядів 5173 дні тому
Practicing throwing consistency is essential for a potter, as it builds the skill to create uniform, functional pieces while enhancing control over the clay. Repetition hones muscle memory, improves precision, and helps achieve balance in form and design. For me, being a potter means embracing the meditative rhythm of the wheel, celebrating the imperfections that make each piece unique, and fin...

Well … I wasn't expecting THAT ! Using Mayco , Spectrum and Amaco glazes !
Переглядів 1,2 тис.12 днів тому
I didn't expect the Muddy Waters to be stable ! Mayco’s Muddy Waters glaze is part of their line of Stoneware glazes, known for its earthy, rustic aesthetic. It typically produces a rich, variegated surface with tones of brown, tan, and hints of green or blue, depending on application and firing conditions. This glaze enhances texture, breaks over raised details, and pools beautifully in recess...

“Come along for a pottery adventure as I attempt something new (and slightly chaotic)! This time, I’m experimenting with glazes, trying out fresh forms, and attempting to make soap and oil bottles with spouts… that may or may not actually fit! Potter’s Tip ! Handles towards the middle
Переглядів 55126 днів тому
Potter’s Tip ! Potters place mug handles toward the middle of the #potteryhandmade #ceramic #glaze kiln to protect them from damage, ensure even heat distribution, and optimize space. This helps prevent breakage, warping, and ensures consistent firing. #kilnopening #pottery #potteryjourney #potterstip #mug
Looks good! I hope it was successful
Agreed!
Nice combos! I loved the cactus and blue rutile, I also love blues and greens. Thanks for sharing!❤
Thanks for watching!
Great kiln opening thank you. I put cones on top and bottom shelves only. Also if you the cones in order of heat ie cooler at front and hotter at the back they would melt onto each other. Just a suggestion. Keep up the great work 😊
Thanks for the tip, I'll have to try that!
I definitely vacuum my kiln before a glaze fire you don't want any tiny bits flying around but also they could melt wherever they fall next firing so it's probably good for keeping shelves clean. Yes, cones on every level, if you find they are different between levels you can adjust what pieces you put where. Once you know though, it's really just in case of emergency, if something goes wrong and you didn't have them in you will never know! Sometimes I forget though or only put them in the middle. I liked seeing your Aventurine i have been thinking about getting it, as it reacts so nicely with oatmeal & HF but I already have the cosmic tea dust that i hardly use so I don't know how different they are. Eventually though I think i might get evvvvery glaze ever lol!😂 Nice work i like seeing the combos on the speckled clay🎉
Think of having an adventure add ine and you have adventur-ine
Beautiful work!!!
Thanks for watching !
The cone packs I put on cookies and I put them on top and bottom shelf. I find the bottom and top fire differently and I try to put glazing reactions I want on the different temp shelfs.
Hello, you had some great pieces come out, grats. I see you're having cups sticking to the cookies. If you had kiln wash to the cookies, they will come off easier. It's something I add to my bisque cookies and it is a life savior. I have added it to non bisque, and it works, but not quite as well.
Oh, I just heard you mention that you put kiln wash on your cookies. 😁
Thanks for the tip, I'll try it out.
At footage 23:10 how many coats of the black adventurine?
2x coats
Hi Shawn, great opening. Put cones on all shelves to ensure that you are getting even firings, I.e. same temp on all shelves. It will alert you to possible issues over time.
Thanks for the info makes sense ..thanks for watching!!!
Adventure-een, I think. The drips look like tree silhouettes. Pretty dang cool!
That’s a very good suggestion Shawn writing on the tops, as when I’m looking for the one glaze it’s always the last one on the shelf 😆 I love the intro, but maybe not the overhead shots 🤣 What a successful firing 😍 I’ve just setup an Etsy shop, but I don’t have a UA-cam channel, I’m still frightened! But having presents on UA-cam must make more sales?
For me having a present on UA-cam = zero sales. ..
@@Shawnreidpotteryahaha me too
I wasn’t going to buy anymore glazes for awhile, but now I want Cactus after seeing your results. My muddy waters is completely different then yours, I put on 3 coats. I don’t put cones in every time just once in awhile. When I do, I put them on all shelves. Your face was so funny on the Taylor Swift comment 😅
Hahahah , thanks for watching !!!!
Oh you might be onto something using the card holders as test tiles!! You could sell the ones that you don’t like. Lol
Oh , fantastic ideas !
Oh wow thanks for feedback and thanks for watching !!! ❤
Hi Shawn! I wish I had kevin ti do my editing! 😂 Oooo...I don't have that Black Adventurine! Cactus is an all time favourite if mine, so reliable! I also vacuum my kiln. Great unload
Hey Audrey !!! I used to edit my videos … it’s a skill set I’m not great at !!! -thanks for watching !
Ooolala some gorgeous glaze combinations. Wow that black aventurine sure is a magnificent glaze, the combination on the first mug is stunning. Love the green colour that cactus produces. So many splendid pieces. Well ✔ done. Just such a fabulous job in this kiln load. Excellent work for someone so new to this glorious hobby. Ciao Happy 🌞 potting 😊
That honey flux/black aventurine mug! 🤩🤩🤩
Your reclaim is beautiful. I love that textured turquoise bowl, It’s almost like a pasta bowl. Love it!
Cool camera tricks! And I LOVE celadon bloom. 😍
Cactus 🌵, celadon bloom and pearl white
Nice what's the glaze?
Beautiful butter dish. Now that is brown clay.
To my knowledge, there are no red clays that change to white when fired. But very nice work!
Excepting?
Always
Hard to say I like the cactus 🌵 soap bottle … I always struggle with handles !!!!
Hey Shawn, nice unload. I would never have thought if using blue Rutile and sangria together! I love Cactus! One of my faves! When i do a slo cool firing, I bump the 5th to 2195. Today, I am bumping it to 2200 to see what happens. Stay tuned for the kiln unload!
Thanks for watching !!! Looking forward to your kiln unload !!!
Thanks for sharing, I really liked the swirl at the bottom of the bowl. I’m just now starting to use a terracotta colored clay and I liked the combination you used on that last piece😊
Thanks for watching !!!!
What’s your favourite piece from the kiln load? I’m struggling with handles as I was watching you!
Hard to say I like the cactus 🌵 soap bottle … I always struggle with handles !!!!
@ stoneware handles seem to be easier than porcelain!😭 I haven’t tried the cactus 😊
Some wonderful pieces in this opening! I guess the trick in all this is to control the unpredictability as much as you can - otherwise everything is a complete surprise! And that might not be a bad thing. :)
that pink 😍
Freddie Mercury is my gas kiln 🔥
Great idea. As we are always needing to use the space adequately
Beautiful combos
Turned out well. Love the mugs. Still needing to learn how to attach handles myself. I've only made little tumblers- no handles.
Thanks for watching , practice, practice and practice … I sent an entire day pulling handles … I still need to work on them !
Shawn, I am so glad that we finally can see you. Sarah mentioned you before and now we all have the chance to see your work.I not just like your pieces I also like your thoughts you share and how you question your results and how you can evolve. Your skills are amazing and I am happy to see more of you in the future. Much Love Suza
Thank you so much .. for your comments .. ❤
I love this. I can’t wait till I get it.😂
I love the size of that dark green soap dish might have to order - few or the boys big Square soaps. Love the soap dispenser.❤
It looks about a cone 5 1/2. Most of the glazes state on the bottle that they are for cone 5/6. Your kiln is firing very evenly. As you stack your shelves try to line up the post with the one on the shelf below. This will help with support of your shelves. I hope this makes sense. Thanks for sharing
Thank you so much for the info - thanks watching !
Wonderful kiln opening , thank you for sharing. Make the oil container into a large soap dispenser 🌸❤️
Great idea!
Welcome to the you tube pottery community Shawn! Congrats on the new kiln!! I fire in a community kiln, so I can’t imagine having my very own! Good luck, I look forward to tagging along on your journey. 😊
Wow! Looks great Shawn!
Thanks 👍
So many nice pieces. I need to give myself a kick up the bum, and get a move on. I'm too fussy and need things to be perfect, then I can't decide what I should do. So basically there's that fear of failing in there somewhere. Like, I know this all. I'm great at giving advise but don't listen to my own words of wisdom ha ha. I know JUST DO IT!!!!!!! Practice makes perfect 😅😅😊😊 Thanks 😊for sharing. What type of kiln is yours??
Hey there ! Thanks for watching my kiln is the coneart 1822
I sell at shows and a local craft store.
Good pots and glasures! I am loading the kiln like you lowest pottery below, highest on top. I did prepare cookies by myself as well. I tahe the Hintergrund from you to add a spiral on top. II prepared 3-pods myself which I currently use on top of cookies or single. Good luck for future pottery.
Oh my goodness, Shawn! Thank you for your very massive and kind shout out! The oil bottle is lovely. Wow! Love that RB & Blue Rutile Interesting method for the yarn bowl. Beautiful combo. So many nice pieces. Love how your salt pig turned out. I use the slow cool firing but my top temp is 2195 for 10 mins. I like a hotter temp. I sell at one shop and a couple of markets. I found keeping a shop going on my website was too difficult with the amount I sell at Krause berry farms. However, if I didn't have Krause, I would go back to listing on my website. Thanks again, Shawn!
Thanks for watching !!! and your insight about selling !.. I have an Etsy … kinda pointless..I need to do markets .. or find a shop that would carry my work .
@@Shawnreidpottery Ya, I had an Etsy shop. It was pointless for me. Sarah at Three Little Potters has one. She sells alot from there but it is mostly small ring dishes, etc... Markets are best if you don't have a shop outlet yet. Agreed.
Great job! Love the soap dispenser! What clay body did you use for that? The spectrum white is perfect!
Hi there , thanks for watching , the clay is mid smooth speckled from Tucker’s.
I have a few different ones in various sizes , thanks for watching !
Great tip for the yarn bowl, I hate when they warp! Kim
