I think that with proper preparation, the new question styles might be a bit easier than the older ones. The scope of possible answers to something like "describe a holiday in your country" is so broad that students get overwhelmed and don't know what to say right from the beginning. The newer and longer prompts narrow the range of what they can say considerably, so it can be easier to get started.
