One thing that's not as clear as in the manga - Bellemere could have easily lied/made some excuse. She chose to tell Arlong she had two children not because she was afraid, but because she wanted more than anything to have a family, and it pained her too much to say that Nami and Nojiko weren't her children, so much so that she would rather die. This refusal to tell a lie, even unto death, is a trait inherited by Nami, and which is significant in the most recent arc when (SPOILERS) Nami refuses to say that Luffy will not become the Pirate King.
I do like the show is fully aware of where the series is going and is changing itself to make it more relevant to the characters’ full arc, not just how Oda was steering it at the time
For those who wonder, it's clear that whatever excuse she would have used wouldn't have been accepted by Arlong. He clearly would have checked and killed Nami and Nojiko had he discovered the lie

He certainly did! Kudos to McKinley Belcher III as Arlong! He made the character more animalistic, ruthless and gangsta-like especially how his theme song fits perfectly! I love how the show stick to practical effects instead of CGI on the Fish-Men! I’m a big fan of SFX prosthetic makeup and I love how accurate Arlong looks in the live-action. 🦈💯 The character is one of my favorite villains and I hope he comes back in Season 2 in a cameo appearance.

They actually portray two different ways a child would react to a parent getting murdered in front of them. The girl who played Nami is crying throughout this scene, and begging Bellemere not to sacrifice herself, while the girl who played Nojiko stays silent most of the time, but you can tell from her expression she's terrified. That's some good acting from child actors. Not to mention, both girls are so adorable!
Given that there are limitations to what live action can and can not do I think they handled this scene very well. Yes, the animé was more heart wrenching but it wouldn't be artistic license if they did this entire scene verbatim.

The 4Kids dub only did one half-decent thing and that was the opening rap theme. Prior to Ennies Lobby,killing off Bellemere and Nami's horrible backstory reigned as THE most traumatizing moment in One Piece. Here, they delivered it and Emily Ruth portrayed Nami's internal suffering and loss so, so well. "He let me stop wearing them when I was twelve. Said it was a birthday gift." That, was worse than Nime pinned to a desk by Arlong and the bloody pen.
I actually have a theory that since the first few episodes had some really brutal scenes (Zoro cutting the guy in half, Luffy vomiting the poison, Merry’s death, etc) that Netflix made them tone down the later episodes. (But seriously, they couldn’t at least have blood splatter on Nami and Nojiko here? They were right behind Bellemere when Arlong shot her)
Because they dont need to show it. Its clear what happened, she was shot. But in not showing it leaves it up to the audience to enterpit how brutal the gunshot was
Kudos to the actress who played Belle-mere (Genna Galloway), who made the most of the limited screen time she had but def made an impression and set a head strong example for young Nami to follow.
This is the only part of LA that I’m quite disappointed in. Bellemere’s death feels less impactful, Genzo’s role is less significant, the villagers and Nojiko don’t know about her sacrifice, and Luffy and Zorro end up knowing her past. It makes Nami’s tattoo less meaningful.

Although not faithful to the source, I appreciate the difference in tone to Arlong. Here his tone is more of a cold mob boss debt collector, rather than an erratic, bloodthirsty psychopath for the fun of it. After he gets her solo payment, he simply chuckles and walks out. After Bellemere asks for the money to cover only her daughters, Arlong makes sure she is aware what that means for her. It’s a quick confirmation too. Neither Arlong nor Bellemere are stupid, and they both know the circumstances of his business, so there’s little need for him to make a bigger deal out of it
The anime and manga make it more clear the reason Bellmere didn't lie is because being a mother meant so much to her she couldn't bring herself to not admit to it, even if she died.

As much as I love the live action, this scene was unfortunately my least favourite. I just kind of wished Bellemere had put up more of a fight for a bit longer, since she was…well, a former Marine. I feel like this is one of the instances where they shouldn’t have to cut anything out from a scene, just so it can deliver just the right emotional impact.

And for the series end, I think if it will continue and get more ans more seasons, it will end before the timeskip, I dont see it getting any further seasons for post timeskip stuff. Kaido and Big mom are just not likely.
I have a feeling the producers originally intended to have Luci Christian (Nami's dub VA) to play Bellemere in the live-action series, but since they were unable to, they got a lookalike instead, who does a great job portraying the character.
Issues with the adaptation of this scene aside, I love that Nami and Nojiko call Bellemere “Mom” in this version, never got why they called her by her name in the manga and anime when she’s raised them since toddlerhood.
In the original, Oda really ramped up the tragedy by fleshing out Bellemere’s character and her actions. She’s barely in the story but she’s very distinct and memorable which is what makes the scene so sad. In the live action, the only reason it’s sad is cause Nami’s mom died which isn’t nearly as compelling
Well you can watch the anime. It fills up all the plot holes in the live action. Not to mention you feel more connected to the characters than the LA. The LA is an after thought.
the only thing I didnt like was how bell mere jus kinda falls very anti-clmicatically (idk if thats a word) They coulda panned to an outside shot of the house and then had the gun sound with some birds fliying away or something. Yes it would be a lil diff than in the manga or anime, but you cant really shadow characters irl to hide things
Kind of glad they went with this route tbh. The scene hit harder because you actually witness Belle-mere dying infront of them. Censoring it would still bring hurt, but not as much as when you actually witness the moment yourself

I havent seen the entire live action, but I know not everything can be done verbatim. I am disappointed in how this scene was portrayed though. In the original, Bellemere never even attempted to lie about how many people lived with her. The townsfolk were actually lying for her. But she denied everything and willingly told Arlong that the money wasn't for her. Never denying her family was important than her own life. Bellemere is a G and she doesnt get enough credit.
Nojiko: (Giving what Arlong wants). Arlong: "Okay. You are free to go.". Nojiko: (Has hints that she has adoptive children). Arlong: "Hey, that's illegal.".
Ok I understand this might seem like a small detail: but why the hell would she step into grabbing range with a LONG RIFLE? She literally saw him open the door and didn’t immediately open fire.
In the manga and anime it made more sense, Bellmere opened the door in Arlong's face before kicking him on his back, landing on top of him and shoving the barrel of her gun in his mouth, basically showing off her fighting skills while sadly underestimating Arlong's own strength.
I don't care if the actress was black yellow brown blue orange purple etc, stick to the fucking source material its not that difficult. They ended up changing nami's backstory for the sake of "inclusion" fucking ridiculous, and I myself as a black man am sick and tired of inclusion fucking every live action over.

thats honestly how i feel with most of the live action stuff. that being said its a pretty decent adaptation and has potential if the budget gets higher, more time is given to arcs (and they fix those weird camera angles...)
I love the netflix version of One Piece they did a hell of a job adapting the anime... except for Bellemere! WTF happened here?! First of all why does she look like 50?? Bellemere was just 30! And what did they do with her character?! Eh, pretty weak compared to the manga. A. Bellemere actually got the drop on Arlong proving she is badass yet also showing how Arlong is still more dangerous B. The rest of the Village was there to try and help and saw Bellemere get executed C. Bellemere flat out tells Arlong the money is strictly for Nami and Nojiko showing she cares not just about them but also the thought of being their mother more than her own life.
A and B are pretty irrelevant points, they made different choices that worked in different ways but in the end it works, the scene remains really well executed; you just seem too unaware of what "adaptation" means and why is not a good idea to literally reproduce 1:1 a freaking anime into live action. Point C is completely bollocks and an insult to human intelligence.

"I am Kinemon a retainer of the kozuki clan! Is Raizo here?!" "Raizo. Is safe." They could've gave him up. They had him chained securely to the whale tree. They could've delivered Raizo to Jack and not lose anybody. But they chose not to out of both love and loyalty.

the only thing I didnt like was how bell mere jus kinda falls very anti-clmicatically (idk if thats a word) They coulda panned to an outside shot of the house and then had the gun sound with some birds fliying away or something. Kind of glad they went with this route tbh. The scene hit harder because you actually witness Belle-mere dying infront of them. Censoring it would still bring hurt, but not as much as when you actually witness the moment yourself

I havent seen the entire live action, but I know not everything can be done verbatim. I am disappointed in how this scene was portrayed though. In the original, Bellemere never even attempted to lie about how many people lived with her. The townsfolk were actually lying for her. But she denied everything and willingly told Arlong that the money wasn't for her. Never denying her family was important than her own life. Bellemere is a G and she doesnt get enough credit.

In the manga and anime it made more sense, Bellmere opened the door in Arlong's face before kicking him on his back, landing on top of him and shoving the barrel of her gun in his mouth, basically showing off her fighting skills while sadly underestimating Arlong's own strength.

thats honestly how i feel with most of the live action stuff. that being said its a pretty decent adaptation and has potential if the budget gets higher, more time is given to arcs (and they fix those weird camera angles...)

I love the netflix version of One Piece they did a hell of a job adapting the anime... except for Bellemere! WTF happened here?! First of all why does she look like 50?? Bellemere was just 30! And what did they do with her character?! They turned her into an ordinary normal woman she was absolutely bad ass and cocky in the anime... i might be biased here because Bellemere is one of my alltime favorite anime mothers but still... could have they made her anymore worse?! I don't think so... what a shame 😞 since episode one i was so excited for Namis childhood story and Bellemere but they absolutely fd that up 😭
But still the series is amazing and i can't wait for Season 2 😅

Eh, pretty weak compared to the manga.
A. Bellemere actually got the drop on Arlong proving she is badass yet also showing how Arlong is still more dangerous
B. The rest of the Village was there to try and help and saw Bellemere get executed
C. Bellemere flat out tells Arlong the money is strictly for Nami and Nojiko showing she cares not just about them but also the thought of being their mother more than her own life.
A and B are pretty irrelevant points, they made different choices that worked in different ways but in the end it works, the scene remains really well executed; you just seem too unaware of what "adaptation" means and why is not a good idea to literally reproduce 1:1 a freaking anime into live action.
Point C is completely bollocks and an insult to human intelligence.
