i would of prefered a glass or metal back. Ive always loved the compact range but there was always a compromise (720 display before, weaker processor, now less premium materials)
This size is so refreshing. 5" is large enough even for gaming, and the compact size is just great to bring along for exercise and hikes. Lack of a headphone jack is a bummer, but I just attach the USB dongle to my only wired headphone and it's good when I'm not using BT headphone. And no, please no glass back for this compact series. I prefer a more durable throw around phone. Sony compact usually comes with the SDRAM slot expansion, BTW.
Hock Sing Ng yeah. I've found older Compact just a bit limited in terms of screen size. That taller screen makes viewing content a bit better! Haha. Oh, and I was referring to the dual SIM capability and having the same story capacity as the bigger version when I said first for Sony compact series ya. Previously even for the XZ1 compact, the compact series had like half the storage capacity of the XZ1, and doesn't have that hybrid dual SIM slot. Apologies if I'm not clear enough in the video. :)
Hock Sing Ng indeed..i'll rather choose 5 incher device than larger.due to my small palm..lol..Love sony since they still managed to produce such compact device
I still am using my xperia x compact for 2 years and loving it. Sony is so underrated but I may pick this as my next phone when my current xperia fail on me.
Nice! Really love the X compact too, very under appreciated phone. If you like Sony, the XZ2 compact is a great option actually. It's one of my favourite phones this year still. It has flagship level hardware and features, but at a lower price. but the downside is that it's rather hard to find in Singapore since only Sony store sells them, and very few people actually buy them. haha.
HD esarias I never had heating problems... I've recorded some videos... Gaming.. In 4k there's the warning that the phone can get overheated.. But I've never experience that. I recorded one time a 40s video with no problems at all. 🙂 But I guess if you want to record big videos you need a proper camara.. Not a phone. Nevertheless the job is done pretty well with the xz1 compact. 😉
João Rodrigues I recorded 50min video in 1080p 30fps on z5c and the phone overheated and stopped the recording, new I use iPhone 7 and I can record over 30min of 4k video with no problems. So I want something better than iPhone 7.
16x9 content is actually only 4.5 inches on this phone, thanks to the 18:9 aspect ratio. This means the vast majority of video content (and many games) are actuality smaller on this device than its 4.6” predecessors.
I had this phone back in 2019 and the only reason I got rid of it was because of the 64gb only option. I'm pissed Sony never brought this back. I really hate how the market favors excessively large phones and if you do find a smaller version it's not that compact and you take a hit on hardware features which is wrong 😤
Alex since you reviewed both xz1 compact amd xz2 compact which is a better buy right now? Even though i already ordered the xz2 compact i want to know if the loss in battery is worth the 1080p display
The XZ2 Compact would be my choice, unless the XZ1 Compact is dirt cheap which isn't the case where I live. Also I don't really care for the headphone jack. haha. It's not just the newer and faster processor, the ability to use dual sim or micro-sd is nice to have, the improvements to the camera image processing, the display upgrade to an 18:9 1080p screen, are all really nice to have features to me. I haven't noticed a big drop in battery life actually. Feels around the same as the XZ1 Compact to me. :)
Nice review. I have XZ2 and since the experience is almost same apart from size, can’t agree more with your view. Never use the dynamic vibration really and wireless charging only occasionally. Front camera 5mp but is surprisingly rich in detail. Only disappointment really is the fingerprint sensor placement, would have been great if it stayed on the power button. But hey it’s not like we have much options these days as most android oems put them at the back.
Its Acceptable to Me... Btw Thanks for the review Alex, Your Video was Helpful to Me to Decide My Next Mobile Android Phone 😁 Still want to get this device even SONY's Been A While since They're leaving Smartphone Market in my country (Indonesia).
Likes: bigger screen, dual sim, curves and weightiness feels great in my hand, good features and soc. z5c likes: 3.5mm socket, wrist strap loop, doubletaptowake, really compact and handy. Despite it being crashed on the road(no mobile connection), i'm still carrying it around in my home watching youtube, surfing etc... TOUGH little baby
Yeah, but the width of the phone has been kept the same as previous compact phones though. So one-handed use is definitely still going to be easier than a regular 5" phone. It's bigger and heavier than older compact series for sure, but it does pack in a bit more features that previous compact devices lacks.
Freediver HD The phone is the same size as other compact models, it's just the screen that's gone bigger. That was the whole point of reducing the bezels isn't it?
Usman, check the specs, its thicker, taller and heavier than the XZ1c. And the XZ1c was already bigger and heavier then the z5, which was also bigger/heavier than the z3.
Gaurav Gupta I was planning to make a video about the xz2 compact this week actually, but was sick. Haha. So faster to just share some of my thoughts here with you first. I have been using one again recently with the android pie update and it’s still really good. The hardware itself is solid. Like with stereo speakers, ip68, sd845, 64gb storage, 4gb ram. These are similar specs to the pixel 3, plus it has the ability to expand the storage too. In terms of performance it’s still as good other top tier android phones. Sony is pretty decent with software updates too. It has a few compromises for sure, but they’re pretty minor. The main one is the camera. It’s not as good as Top tier phones like the Pixel 3 or Note9, but it’s good enough. If you can get a good deal for it, and you don’t mind the size, it’s still a great option imo.
Not worth the upgrade if u already have a Sony Xperia XZ1 phone! But this is still a really nice phone! Gonna wait till XZ3 or XZ4 compact phones release to upgrade my XZ1 Compact phone :)
thanks man, unfortunately i don't have the phones with me anymore. But for me personally i'll go xz2 compact. it has a better screen, better speakers, better processor, and most importantly, better camera. So despite the heavier body, the lack of 3.5mm jack, i still prefer the xz2 compact. But if the xz1 compact is cheap enough, it's still a really nice phone too. :)
For someone who values and loves compact flagship phones, this is meh. The biggest complaint i have for the build is positioning of camera lens, flash and the fingerprint is very hideous, apart from few more complaints. but this is strictly MY opinion
If you had to choose between the XZ2 Compact and the Pixel 2, which would you go for? I'm trying to decide between the two for my next phone. I'm coming from an iPhone 6s and want a decent Android phone with a similar form factor as well.
Great question. For me personally, it's still the Pixel 2 because of the software support from Google (fast update to new version of android), software experience (stock android with unlimited hi-res uploads to Google Photos), and that insanely good camera. But the XZ2 Compact has a few points in its favour too, which is why it's like my second favourite Android phone just behind the Pixel 2. For example I like the speakers a bit better, the performance from the SD845 is slightly better, it has a hybrid slot that supports either dual sim or microSD card, and the battery life is also noticeably better (like around 1.5 hours more screen on time). That 18:9 screen is a nice bonus too, and here in Singapore, it has local warranty and is cheaper than the Pixel 2. Size wise it kind of depends i think. For me I find both small enough for one handed use, with the XZ2 Compact being just a bit easier. In the end, if camera is most important to you, I would say Pixel 2 for sure. But if not, it'll be down to personal preference already. Can't go wrong with either if you ask me. :)
Alex Hong Thanks for the response. I'm currently leaning more towards the XZ2 Compact but will wait for price drops on that and the Pixel 2 before finally pulling the trigger.
I bought the XZ1 Compact last week for £225. Very happy with it. It absolutely flies. I wanted the lightest and smallest flagship level Android compact. I felt the XZ2 Compact was too big as was the Pixel 2, and they are a good £175/£250 dearer respectively (based on recent sales) than the XZ1 Compact.
Its a great device , however you better make sure you have a real good protective case for this phone coze it tends to quickly slip of your hands ...there is no issue with the headphones eventhough no jack ..Initially I had great concern regarding Sony products with their propretary software and very poor customer support world wide , however is a great device less their factory installed APPs but in all is a great device ! PS : I had few days experience with this device here are some additional remarks , is a geat quality super fast and promising , however is getting quickly hot during summer climate in Central Europe eventhough not really exposed to heat ,cam shutter in whatsup mode way too slow , the device is easy to operate and reacts fastly , no quick launch icon like on other phones , unless you get a good protective casing you going to soon have this expensive devise kaput because it tends to quicly slip of your hands, Sony standard factory apps are OK though some would spy on you .
Its a great device, however it gets quickly very hot on normal climate temperatures, it tends to slip of the hands , no appropriate casing from Sony ...Sony customer support failed to address the overheating problems despite repeated emails at my end .
Diaz Ligardi it does actually. The weight is still a little high, but the because of the taller screen, the width of the phone is smaller than other 5" phones with a normal 16:9 screen. It's the same width as previous Compact device too actually.

And icing of the cake is fingerprint sensor on the back. Seriously WTF Sony?! Front (like Huawei P10) would be ten times better than back... They made one step forward with design but ten steps backward with practicality.
Brian Oliver same foot print of the Xz1c but with no headphone Jack and ugly design and an less well placed fingerprint scanner. It could have been so good :(
I'm happy that Sony is not neglecting this demographic of people who value small Flagship phones.
THIS! Hopefully they'll keep the lineup.
Bad, very uggly
Alexander E. you are wrong it's a very cute phone.
Absolutely!
i would of prefered a glass or metal back. Ive always loved the compact range but there was always a compromise (720 display before, weaker processor, now less premium materials)
The compact series really is sony's strong point
Thanks for a balanced review of the XZ1C. I've had mine for over a month now and it's been an extremely satisfying experience.

RudolphOoO complaint? Kids?
Finalyy, thanks for the review alex! Thank you
You have great cinematography skills and deserve more subs, keep it up man
Thanks a lot man!! Will keep trying to improve! Cheers!!!
I came very close to buying one of these. I like a smaller phone, and this one has good specs. I hope Sony releases an XZ3 Compact.

Xperia phones are the best ♥ Especially Oreo update removes all old bloatware and 100x better battery life ♥
Nice review. I have XZ2 and since the experience is almost same apart from size, can’t agree more with your view. Never use the dynamic vibration really and wireless charging only occasionally. THANKS! Yeah, I still really like the side mounted buttons actually, still usable even with the phone on my desk. But overall it's such a nice phone!
Its Acceptable to Me... Btw Thanks for the review Alex, Your Video was Helpful to Me to Decide My Next Mobile Android Phone 😁 Still want to get this device even SONY's Been A While since They're leaving Smartphone Market in my country (Indonesia).
Nice and detailed review! Keep it going!
The xperia xz2 compact looks much better than the original xz2
I got this phone for 300 euros (new) It feels really good in hand, thickness doesn't bother at all.
I agree with you. This is the best compact android smartphone. 👍👍
Likes: bigger screen, dual sim, curves and weightiness feels great in my hand, good features and soc. z5c likes: 3.5mm socket, wrist strap loop, doubletaptowake, really compact and handy. 5inch screen and over 160grams are definitly not compact. Sony definitly forgot the days of the SO-05D Xperia SX, and Z3 Compact.
Yeah, but the width of the phone has been kept the same as previous compact phones though. So one-handed use is definitely still going to be easier than a regular 5" phone. Yeah i don't understand the point in having a so called "compact" phone as heavy as a big 6 inch phone or even heavier than some of them.
The back looks like my old Xperia SP. Good times.
yes bro haha
Hey Alex, wondering if you'll recommend this phone now in late 2018? Getting a good deal for it
Gaurav Gupta I was planning to make a video about the xz2 compact this week actually, but was sick. Haha. So faster to just share some of my thoughts here with you first.

In 2024 this looks like the new higher end power-banks.. lol. I 100% thought that’s what this video was for from the thumbnail at first.
🤣🤣🤣
Not worth the upgrade if u already have a Sony Xperia XZ1 phone! But this is still a really nice phone! Gonna wait till XZ3 or XZ4 compact phones release to upgrade my XZ1 Compact phone :)

I only use small phone love you sony you are the only option now.
Watching this on xz1 compact i just bought 2 weeks ago.
Nice! Xz1 compact is still a really nice phone. And much cheaper than xz2 compact now.
I really love previous gen design. Congrats
Yeah, same here. Bought mine just 3 days ago because it was on sale.

Great Review good job!!!
Watching on xz2 compact 2024 😊
Does it comes with display protection? Very Nice review
Amit Pal thanks! Sadly it doesn’t. And the slightly curved edges makes it a little hard to find nice fitting ones.
Nice wallpaper where can I download it?
the design looks soooo good...pretty one ;) ;)
dose it worthy to get the xz2 - over the xz1 ?
Sony is back in the game
*You are so undderrated Good video!*
Phoenix 1024 first!!! Haha. Thanks a lot for the comment! Really appreciate it! 🙏
Its a great device, however it gets quickly very hot on normal climate temperatures, it tends to slip of the hands , no appropriate casing from Sony ...Sony customer support failed to address the overheating problems despite repeated emails at my end .
Battery in 2020 is ok, not bad but not great either. Speed is fast but no software support. Stuck on android 9. Not sure how to force android 10.
The Best review for this machine!
Compact? Does it feel like.. an under 5-inch smartphone?
Diaz Ligardi probably since it has an 18:9 5 inch display which should result in a smaller form factor
Diaz Ligardi it does actually. The weight is still a little high, but the because of the taller screen, the width of the phone is smaller than other 5" phones with a normal 16:9 screen. It's the same width as previous Compact device too actually.
The price?
Do you have any heat problems with xz2 compact? How much can record in 4k until is overheating?
haven't had any heat problem yeah. It does get a bit warm when playing games or using the camera, but nothing serious. I haven't really tested how long it can record 4k for though, and I don't have the phone with me anymore. sorry about that. cheers.
you used sony home launcher ? if yes, how to setting sony home launcher swipe up to open the menu app draw ?
Yes, i'm just using the default sony launcher. I can't remember exactly where since I don't have the phone with me anymore, but it might be on the home screen settings (when you long press an empty area on the homescreen). It might be call something like "Hide apps icon" or something like that. If it isn't there, you can try clicking the 3 dots at the top right corner when you're in the app drawer. Hope this helps.
thanks you so much mate
What is the brand of screen protector you used?
It’s a generic one from eBay ya. But the fitting isn’t that great too. There are some gaps at the sides. :/ but at least there’s some protection
How can I get it brand new am from Nigeria
hatyai?
I'm waiting for xz3
Taki Kun There won’t be one...
You want a good compact phone!!
( iphone 8! )
The only handy cap is in headphone jack why sony.
And also why doesn't they focus in this Compact line upp I really want this phone to go more wide and less tall.
Actually I want that in all the phones, seriously wtf does the manufacturers thing I finger grows that tall over night
@alex do you have any article/website where we can download full res. image of xz2 compact..since im planning to get one..thanks and cheers.
You mean full res image of the phone? Sony do have a site to download photos of the phone. blogs.sonymobile.com/image-gallery/
But if you're talking about camera full res image, then GSMarena has a nice comparison tool. www.gsmarena.com/piccmp.php3?idType=4&idPhone1=9082&idPhone2=8610&idPhone3=9081
:)
Alex Hong yup i mean camera samples of xz2 compact..in actual shooting ..thnaks.
Like your video(s) a lot, this one is not an exception, but Sony's new Compact is an odd phone, stick 6 Series Snapdragon and it can be any price from 300 to 400$, so...
(Plastic (ain't after all that) fantastic as Aqua stated decades ago)
i want to ask if the xz2 is out at singapore or not yet
Yup! both the XZ2 and XZ2 Compact are out in Singapore already. But the XZ2 Premium not yet.
im gonna buy the xz2
where should i buy the phone?
any recommended places
Oscar 8833 you can try retailers like redwhitemobile, kasiamobile. Those are pretty reputable shops in Singapore and they're selling the phone way cheaper than Sony stores over here. Unless you're looking for the XZ2 Compact, then that's only at the Sony stores here in Singapore. :)
where is the red white mobile located at? And btw how much does the xz2 cost at the official store
such a lovely cute phone....
What is with this new trend of removing the headphone jack? Most people like having one smartphone manufacturers!!
Then Samsung released the S10e to dethrone XZ2 *Compact*
*THE BEST XPERIA.*
I wait so long for Xperia Compact dual sim. It was my dream smartphone but without headphone jack it's again useless for me :-(

WTH?!
how THICK is that phone?
Quite. or 12.1mm at its thickest. But it's a curved back, for it doesn't feel that bad in hand. lol.
Hold it. You won't even notice it and it holds better in the hand than the thinner phones.
Premium to have a glass back, really?
5 inch is compact? alright
Brian Oliver same foot print of the Xz1c but with no headphone Jack and ugly design and an less well placed fingerprint scanner. It could have been so good :(
X-pera.
