  • In this video I'll show you how I dyed my orange Ozark Trail D2 Knife that I purchased at Walmart for $10+tax. What you will need is some water, about a cup of vinegar, Black RIT dye, a pot and a stove.

    This looks much better than the orange, in my opinion. The only problem in my opinion with this technic is the fact that vinegar is an acid, so it could damage the lock spring if it is not a stainless spring. I like the look of the lock and the hardware without the factory finish, and if the vinegar took the coating off the blade completely and left it looking "stone washed" that would be a plus to me. I don't mind wiping down a carbon steel blade on occasion to prevent rust, and they build up a nice patina over time when they are uncoated. I may try to find some tiny Torx drivers and take one of mine apart and doing this. Maybe even scuff the finish off the liners and blade to let the vinegar etch the steel to get that stone washed look. These are great little knives! Thanks for the video!!

    Mine are a darker burnt orange color, I kinda like it. I might dye one of them to see how it turns out, however I will be taking the handle scales off so the finish of the steel isn't ruined by the salt in the dye.

    Neat idea - I like the black! BTW, vinegar is acidic in nature, so that’s why it “stonewashed” some of the hardware….

    I dyed 2 of mine black and then I tried to dye one green. It ended up coming out brownish or a bronze still looks awesome. I did not use vinegar. Just hot water and left it in there. About 20 minutes came out perfect.

    The black looks way better lol. I was considering getting the sapphire blue and doing this... I think I should be able to blast that orange with enough dye to make it dark blue.

    Nice video, I bought 4 so might try a color on one or two. I also would learn how to disassemble & reassemble. Avoid a few issues & save the finish on the metal bits. I know eventually they'll show wear, but will stay new looking longer. Froggy

    Should probably take it apart, this is a good knife to practice that on too.

    Weird, but from the store mine has the normal orange scale on one side and a clearly darker orange on the other... Not sure how that happened.

    Oil the knife after you are finished and nothing will rust or 9:12 corrode. WR-40 or other machine oil.

    • @bloodgain
      @bloodgain 2 дні тому

      WD-40 is not a machine oil, it's a penetrating oil and rust inhibitor. You should either use a lubricant designed for knives or a proper machine oil like a gun oil, sewing machine oil, 3-in-1, or even plain mineral oil. What works best depends on the pivot mechanism, really; some pivots work best with a light grease instead of oil.

    Bearings or washers? Blade play?

      Theres plenty of videos out now with reviews of this knife. This video was meant to help people dye their knife since it only comes in Orange currently. But, it has plastic bearings with little blade play, very good bang for the buck.

      @@tgonzalez1983Keep in mind it's a $10. Knife. You can't go wrong but know it's not a Benchmade not will it ever be. That said I will share my experience. I used mine daily at work for simple things like opening boxes, cutting nylon straps, and cutting cardboard. I've had to sharpen it twice. There is noticeable up and down play as well as side by side. I tried tightening the blade screw but It's tight already. I noticed if you turn the locking bar around the blade snugs up a little bit which makes me think that's where most of the wear is. Also the paint on the liberal wears off easily. The last thing I noticed is my blade no longer is centered in the liner. It leans toward the belt clip side and it was centered when I bought it.
      It's still a $10. knife at the end of the day and it will hold an edge until you put it through a couple of weeks use. My SOG Flash 2 holds an edge a lot longer but it cost 5 times as much. If you want a better $10. Knife look at the Ruike P121. It's 14C28N steel. G10 scales. Has a 15 day replacement warranty if defective. 5 years free repair with normal use. And lifetime free maintenance where you pay for the parts. Only drawback if you could call it that is it's a liner lock and not a bar lock. It locks up solid. No blade play. The blade is centered perfectly in the frame and it opens smooth as butter. I've owned mine about 5 years so the price might have increased some like everything else. Available on Amazon.
      Another great $10. Knife I bought at Walmart is an assisted opening Kershaw Hotwire knife. It's small with a 3" blade. It's super sharp seeing I've cut myself a few times with it. It's my current every day carry. It also has a lifetime warranty. Walmart stopped selling it for a while and I believe it was discontinued. However it's on Walmarts website now for $14.97 I paid $9.99 a few years ago. There's only 2 left in stock and I think I'm buying another one because I really like it.
