Obviously Talented, but this sounds to me like the Death of Christmas, i prefered the original which is a classic it had nothing to do with Christmas yet fitted brilliantly with the festive period, wheras this version would probably be better sang at halloween by a crazed wife who has been ditched and is now looking for revenge. LOL.
I don't understand all the hate towards this cover. They completely changed a dumb song into something haunting and full of emotion. Simplicity makes perfection.
It seems like they get it on every cover. Most of the covers I've heard them perform have been amazing. I think Lauren has a quiet depth to her that a lot of people miss, because they're looking for that over-expressive performer and maybe miss the subtlety she brings.
No, they didn't. They turned something nice to listen to into something dull, and it's not haunting, it's not full of emotion. That's just the way her voice sounds. Her delivery is still mechanical and empty. This is reinforced by all of them looking bored and tired, like they're performing an advertising jingle.
Vojta K. I don't hate it, I just don't see this "haunting and full of emotion" thing that the original poster mentioned. It's excessively devoid of emotion. It's an already empty but sweet song robbed of its sweetness, and almost mocked for its shallowness.
Vojta K. A glimpse of intelligence on UA-cam! Incredible. I think you are a hundred percent right. Music is not a competition, it's art, it's about expression. I also agree with your second comment. It's a matter of taste. Not everyone likes coffee, and not everyone likes tea, which doesn't mean we have to bring negativity to someone else's door.
Obviously they're great musicians, the singer has a very delicate and sensitive voice and for a cover it's really different from the original... But having said that, I must admit I still prefer the original. That song was written reflecting on the death of one of the band member's brother, and personally I find it more heartfelt and less "clinical". The original melody might not be as original and experimental, but conveyed more emotion, imo.
love them so its hard to hate but this just simply didnt work because it changed the melancholy of th original, its still moody but its just too upbeat in this arrangement.
Clearly come to this late, but it's a marmite cover, either love it or hate it. Personally I love it but the minor chords, diminished and augmented intervals are unexpected.
Thought that was pish tbh. Glasvegas cover of Stay another Day is far superior and encapsulates the emotion of the song. This is sterile and unemotional.
I love Cyrches and usuallky applaud change but this definitely takes all the positive aspects of the original and strips them away to the point of being unenjoyable. Not a good cover. Not technically bad, just conceptually flawed.
Lol, that 'beat' sounds like one of them crappy pre sets you get on a keyboard. Are bands really this lazy these days? The singing is pretty good though, she has a very unique sound.
This is great! Sure it's not the original, but covers are supposed to be THEIR rendition of the song. They are SUPPOSED to add their own style to the song, which they did very well.
very intelligent cover takes a great pop xmas song to a whole new level love it love it love it!!! and yes I used to love the smiths and the cure when I was a lad!! Happy Xmas dont go killin yourself!!
Poor singing, badly arranged, utterly dire. Heard it on the radio and had to have another listen as I couldn't believe how bad it was the first time around.
sam samuel IT TAKES ONE TO KNOW ONE FELLA, PEOPLE IN GLASS HOUSES SHOULDN'T THROW STONES, SO PUT THE STONE DOWN, TURN AROUND AND GO HOME, LITTLE BOY : 0 (
great cover, but i really hate the BBC Radio 1 intro.
the end is worse,I always get a headache from that sound
It's likemy headphones explode every time..
I did not think it was going to sound like this.
tenderpoison182 same, was hyped for it but disappointed
Absolutely nailed it! Well done!
Lauren is my waifu
dégueulasse
Wrong key. Phrasing all wrong.
its a cover smartass
That is not how you get people to Subscribe. Radio 1 always have hideous intros, didn't know they could make such an awful outro as well.
I did not like the original song at all, but I do like your interpretation of this song very much so...wonderful.
"I play synth...
we all play synth..."
This sound is wonderful, why is it not on the album? One of my favorites
Cause it's not theirs.
I love how they always come up with new covers of absolute favourite songs of mine
and fucking destroy them.. but not in a good way, ( IS HOW I THINK YOU SHOULD HAVE ENDED YOUR STATEMENT ), it's okay, i feel your pain : 0 )
David Malton Don't you have something else to do?
LeniInChains this is the best cover i heard i love it
THIS IS THIS NOT GOOD, TURN UP YOUR HEARING AID LOVE, THEN YOU MIGHT UNDERSTAND WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT...
lukie heathy YOU NEED TO GET OUT MORE FELLA : 0 (
Try watching in 0.5 speed and 1.5 speed, it's quite good.
1.5 is good 0.5 is a bit glichy
Konoha Izaki-Lee 1.5 is like an old 80's track. Pretty good actually. 0.5 is just trippy as fuck.
yh i agree it is definitely too trippy for my liking anyway devstaralmighty123
Actually loved it at 1.5 speed :) reminds me of Ellie Goulding.
Where, or how can we change the pitch on a youtube video? am I misunderstanding you maybe?
I don't understand all the hate towards this cover. They completely changed a dumb song into something haunting and full of emotion. Simplicity makes perfection.

the original kills this
I love the synth, straight out of the 1980s.
Just love hearing that Scottish lilt in Lauren's voice.
Yeah people love a high pitched beep at the end of the video fuckin great.
Awesome song though, Chvrches.
Takes a couple of listens to really appreciate this as its such an unusual cover. But the more I listen to better it sounds ❤
dem iain backup vocals
i like this a lot, having never heard of this song or east 17; i am horrified by the original
HI HI HI
I'm chef goldblum.
first time I'm hearing this. I think it may be their best cover song.
Have you heard their cover "xo" "do I wanna know" or "love"
I love her range the ebb and flow, her vulnerability in her voice she is so dam good its unreal .
nice job, but why does Lauren always seem pissed off/grumpy in many videos? No judgement, just curious. Maybe she just has an angry neutral face.
I think it's a nice natural look, maybe it's the Scottish-ness. I think a lot of people on TV are trained to always have an artificial happy look.
she seems anxious.
noah wayne no, she is actually in bad moods most times I’ve seen her live and there wasn’t a time she hasn’t got mad at the audience.
Maybe she is just concentrating...
why is she always upset? do you know? I saw the clip of marry me, the heckler who got chewed out
I don't think it's better than the original, but a pretty good revival of it.
Obviously they're great musicians, the singer has a very delicate and sensitive voice and for a cover it's really different from the original... if you all hate this watch the Bastille version its amazing
Charlie Wright WAAAAH IT'S SUPER GOOD ! I need a whole cover of the song
and since I can't move on, here I am finding the best cover of the song
Charlie Wright meh
Their cover was a weak medley and very by the numbers. Prefer this.
any other cover is probably better than this churches rubbish.
its just not as good as the Mexican version in the Doritos's advert
oh boy! my sister used to listen to this song about 20 years ago... doesn't make us feel any younger :)
And now another 8 years have passed. 😮 Still, great song. I was 8 or 9 listening to it when East 17 first put out that album (on cassette!! ahah)
When I heard they were doing this, I thought it was going to be terrible. I have never been so wrong.
I love the desolate, industrial sound they've given the song in this cover!
I love this version more than the original version.
Kikyo Atyqs lol....geez
Video of the original is really funny if you want to look it up. Even in terms of boy bands
love them so its hard to hate but this just simply didnt work because it changed the melancholy of th original, its still moody but its just too upbeat in this arrangement.
@vleon1013 They're not a Christian band, they just thought the name sounded good.
Maybe release this on iTunes?
Fk me my ears, crap
props for trying to do something different, but it sounds pretty dreadful
Wow, wow, wow. So lovely! Lauren's vocals are very nuanced and soulful. Meanwhile Iain and Martin do a great job with the beats and backing vocals.
My birthday is like a cloverleaf 🍀 one stem and four leaves 🍃 so the 4th of the 1st of January
seriously?? no comments??? this is amazing !!!!!
It just works. Laurens hauntingly great voice and the funky synths.
loving the hats....
Like them very.
Clearly come to this late, but it's a marmite cover, either love it or hate it. Personally I love it but the minor chords, diminished and augmented intervals are unexpected.
God I just love this cover so much. It's so beautiful and haunting.
All the haters on the fan Facebook page. God I'm ashamed of them.
Better to just enjoy the music :)
Still come back to this cover 9 years later
Thought that was pish tbh.
Glasvegas cover of Stay another Day is far superior and encapsulates the emotion of the song. This is sterile and unemotional.
***** The original is about the singers brother dying.Once I found that out I found it quite poignant tbh.
@@WalterWhiteLovesShed and yet it is written as a love song which doesn't make sense
Well done lauren, lain, martin this is better than the first one by miles
Absolutely beautiful ! Made my day when it came on radio today!
If you're going to criticize the band than don't even comment on here.
I love Cyrches and usuallky applaud change but this definitely takes all the positive aspects of the original and strips them away to the point of being unenjoyable.
Not a good cover. Not technically bad, just conceptually flawed.
dunno why but I got hungry cause of her voice
o.o
I love this and I love chvrches great cover really made it your own
good
Glasvegas' version was much better.
Amazing! East 17 in a Glasgow Uni stylee
I like this song it’s also my birthday today
You guys are awesome :) Keep rockin'!
I prefer it when Bastille sing it tbh
The Bastille one was torture. The guy could barely sing.
Her voice is gorgeous *~*
Lol, that 'beat' sounds like one of them crappy pre sets you get on a keyboard. Are bands really this lazy these days?
The singing is pretty good though, she has a very unique sound.
I love this version, I prefer it.
This is great! Sure it's not the original, but covers are supposed to be THEIR rendition of the song. They are SUPPOSED to add their own style to the song, which they did very well.
Awful awful AWFUL cover ahhhh my poor ears :(!!! Every time it's on radio one I have to change the station!
Atuly really like this. I like the original but this brings a whole new sound and really diffrent and I don't know I just really like it.
Loving the santa hats
they look like robots 0:04
This is so depressing
Love it!
Why do people have to ruin songs?
What exactly is ruined? The original? Which you can still listen to while choosing not to listen to the version you don't like?
Cutest snowflake ever.
very intelligent cover takes a great pop xmas song to a whole new level love it love it love it!!! and yes I used to love the smiths and the cure when I was a lad!! Happy Xmas dont go killin yourself!!
Great cover :D
This is soooooo good!
Poor singing, badly arranged, utterly dire. Heard it on the radio and had to have another listen as I couldn't believe how bad it was the first time around.
Piss off
Benedict newman Thanks. Stay classy.
Your comment lost credibility at the "poor singing" she is one of the best singers around right now
Benedict newman Sorry, but I don't have discussions with people who write comments like that. Especially when they are discussing *my* credibility.
Insanely good !!!
I love how she looks like 17 n the other guys 30. How old is she?
You murdered this song, go back to stacking shelves in tesco.
Wow. Because chvrches are so bad. Gtfo. Chvrches are amazing.
*expecting to see someone with qualifications in law and journalism and a successful music career shelf-stacking for a living*
Love Chvrches! Unfortunately this cover didn't really work...
Great singing as always, Lauren. Great cover, CHVRCHES!
Chirches should have played for spurs today instead of doing this
Merry Christmas!
This a great cover. Her voice sends me to another place every time Lauren sings
(Y).
this is awful haha
they grew a lot in the past coupla years like stage persona-wise.
Stay another day
Bland at best.
What a cover?
try it at 0.75 speed...
It id possible to get that version of this song? amazing!
I THINK DURING THE THE CHORUS SHE LOST THE TUNE .....
I LOST THE PLOT .....
THANKS CHURCHES FOR FUCKING UP MY CHRISTMAS : 0 (
You're an arse.
sam samuel IT TAKES ONE TO KNOW ONE FELLA, PEOPLE IN GLASS HOUSES SHOULDN'T THROW STONES, SO PUT THE STONE DOWN, TURN AROUND AND GO HOME, LITTLE BOY : 0 (
David Malton why are you writing everything in capitals???
***** WHY NOT, fella : 0 )
because its abit wierd
I'm surprised Lauren and Justin Long
She sounds and looks so young! but is actually like 26 right now....
kylie galvez now she is 30 and looks the same
hahaha epic song choice, I love this :D
creep
WOW...Excellent!
1.5 sounds like autotune hah
This is what I love about the Live Lounge, fitting a song into one band's sound. Like what Pendulum did to Violet Hill.
That is my absolute favourite cover. Made a coldplay song uplifting
Love them but they reply to me on twitter
Much better than the original!
