Like A Version is a segment on Australian radio station triple j. Every week a musician or band comes into the studio to play one of their own songs and cover a song they love.

This is how you do a cover! Never ask, "Can I do that song like the original artist?" Always ask, "What would THEIR song sound like if it was OUR song?" Brilliant job, Chvrches!
This is more like making their own music and putting on Arctic Monkeys' lyrics. Re-arranging is definitely good as you add something of your own to the song but this is a bit too much IMHO.
Yeah but that's not always true, because you still need to keep the original idea of the song, for instance no one should make a slow ballad version of hey ya
I guess I like the covers that go a whole new direction. For instance, I love Disturbed doing The Sound of Silence, and The English Beat doing Tears of a Clown. These are both genre-bending covers, just like Chvrches.

i’m a huge arctic monkeys fan, but i have to say that i also love synth pop postal service type music like this too. and lauren’s voice is just gorgeous and that might be the number one pull in this cover. you believe every moment of this song even though it’s not really anything like the original, because they made it theirs

My favorite part of this band is Black Shirt Guy's enthusiasm versus the stoic power vocals of Elven Princess.

The perfect cover makes you love both the original creator and the band covering the song. This is perfect.
i love both versions of this song. chvrches did such a great job taking this song to another place and putting an unexpected spin on the sound/whole feel of the song. both versions exhibit longing but this version sounds more hopeful while the other version sounds darker and more seductive. amazing how sound and tone can twist lyrics like that. that's the beauty of music :)
Reading the comments here is a good case study in why you should not give a single fuck what anybody else thinks about music... just listen to the things you enjoy , and do it for yourself :)

I don't know why people are hating on this cover so much. If you've listened to the original and compare it to this, the two versions have a COMPLETELY different feel. She took this song and put HER emotion into it. It's almost like comparing apples to eggplants. I think it's a beautiful cover

lol Actually, it was. I would say it's footage of a different part of the song, with the correct part of the song over it. Video editors seem to do this quite a bit in case they don't like the actual camera angles

Arctic Monkeys are my favourite band by a long way, but I really really enjoy this cover, and this is the first time I've ever heard anything CHVRCHES have done but I'm definitely going to give them a listen now. It's so original and people complaining about it being too different to the original, that's the point? Like usually people cover it and it's just the same song in a different voice, this is like a completely different song, it's awesome! Some people are so close minded about what other people like and so biased towards their favourite bands it's actually hilarious

I love the original, and I love this too; Chvrches does the best covers. They always put their own spin on a song and really make it their own. They don't try to make it like the original at all, they're unique, and that's why their one of my favorites. They gotta release this version, I'd love that so much

I feel like people are missing the point that some of the most creative and interesting covers DON'T sound just like the original. It'd be pointless to pay homage to other artists if you didn't put your own spin on it. For CHVRCHES that just happens to be happy, sparkly indie-pop.
... plus, we should all just put our opinions on hold and observe just how ungodly cute is Lauren.
I'll give you the cute... BUT I wish new bands would pump the brakes on the covers these days, esp. on their first records. This particular song has tons already. (ms Mr, Churches, Daley, Haim, etc...)
cary whitt What record are you talking about? This song definitely isn't on any Chvrches album... as far as I know they just did it for Triple J. I agree with you though. Artists should find their own niche and gain confidence with their individual style (something I think Chvrches has done quite nicely) before branching out into lots of covers. I think it's a testament to the band having "arrived" that they can cover this song - one that's very different from their own sound - and still end up sounding authentic.
As far as your last sentence, I also agree. This AM song has gotten killed with covers and radio play. Maybe it's the hipster in me, but I liked it a lot more before it was blaring everywhere.

I don't think its hipstery, I get sick of great songs all the time when they get blasted on the radio every 5 tracks. thats whats rough about radio it's always top 40 for every genre.
Travis White Agreed on that account. Two "new" bands have very little business covering each other. Neither have been around long enough to gain the influence of being cover-worthy. Both make good (great?) songs, but they aren't legends.

I've been listening to this on repeat aaall day! I prefer it much more to the original. Lauren gives the song such a fresh sound, and the beat makes the song extra catchy. I think this is gonna be stuck in my head for weeks. I'm not angry though! I love it. I really hope Chvrches comes near me(Vancouver) in their future tours..

this is an awesome version, but I have to disagree, as per usual I think that the original is somewhat better, though I'm sorta a super hard fan of the Arctic Monkeys so I'm pretty biased, but it's an awesome take away from it. I enjoyed it nevertheless.

The hate is really unnecessary. The song is quite a sad song, which is emphasized through Lauren's voice. She has amazing vocals, which can adapt to any emotion in a song. You can not like it, but her vocals are just fine.
This is actually her best vocal performance of the pre-vocal coaching era of her career. It really showed flashes of what was to come. Her ability to be sad, sexy, desperate, manic all at the same time is so impressive, and all at a time when she was basically still a professional drummer moonlighting as a singer. What a talent she is.

I love the take on the two people singing instead of one as if it's shared thoughts. I knew about chvrches before and I thought they were OK, not their music was only ok but that they didn't have a whole lot of diversity in their sound and when I saw this on 104.5 I thought "oh jeez a cover" but wow it was great and I can't stop listening because it sounds so good! New found respect for this band and I'm opening my eyes to their sound

Nice take on the 'duet' side of the song, it's really nice to see how other interpret the song and I never really though of it that way. It saddens me when the majority of people on this video are AM fans who don't like it solely because it's being sung by CHVRCHES and not Arctic Monkeys.

The original makes you focus on the driving beat, but remove that with this version and you focus more on the lyrics. I never really figured out what this song was about listening to the original because I was focused on the bass and drums, but I figured it out pretty quickly in this version.

They took a song I can't stand, and turned it into something haunting and melodic that thoroughly enchants me. I'm pleasantly surprised and impressed. I don't quite love what they did with the chorus instrumental, a bit too lively for the rest of the song, but still superb to me, particularly for a live performance.
I prefer the original because I am rock and roll at heart, but this is an amazing cover. They made it their own and it sounds wicked, so I don't see the point in arguing about which is better. It's the same song but two different types of music so naturally everyone is gonna prefer one or the other, but it doesn't make the other version shit...

It's actually nonsense that she can sing that good live. Most songs you hear on the radio are spliced and cut practically a couple words at a time to get a perfect radio version. She's so incredible.

Even though I'm a huge fan of artic monkeys I really like this version of the song, who said that it was supposed to look like the original version, the purpose of doing a cover is bringing something new to it and that's exactly what they did
Really don't care for Chvrches' music, but this cover won me over after the first chorus; the singer's more varied/nuanced, almost 'jazzy' attack reminds one of the kind of intimacy Arctic Monkeys listeners are familiar with from pre-AM acoustic performances. The live versions of Do I Wanna Know can get a little overbearing/plodding, brutal without more nudging the beat and delivery here and there, the occasional pregnant pause like the one before "crawling back to you", that you'd just like to hang there for a moment longer, to be breathless.
