People use to tell me that when my husband and I retire we won't last a year because retired people get on one another's nerves. My husband and I have been married for 52 years. We were best friends first and have remained so. Love grows deep into the soil. Sometimes you cannot see it or feel it. You don't need to because the best friends' part is like the Sun that pours the strength of its light into the depths of the cold dark soil. You guys are best friends. You breath together. You move together. You walk together. You think together. Protect that. Take it from grandma. Most people no longer do. God Bless You
Wow!! Just saw this comment, and it's beautiful!! I do think sometimes we tend to forget how important it is that there is just as much "like" as there is love in a marriage...friendship in marriage...so necessary!
I noticed that, when you transplanted the tomato plants you started from seed, you planted the roots and soil only as deep as the cup, even if the tomato plants were “ spindly”. My dad was a master gardener ( there were 10 in my family). He taught me that you can ( for the taller plants) plant them much deeper because tomato plants will grow roots out from the main trunk, and more roots mean a better start for the tomatoes. He took off the bottom leaves of the taller plants, leaving about 5-6” or the primary part of the plant, above the soil. I too love the aroma tomatoes. They have more “ meat” to them. I have a marvelous salsa recipe if you need one. I love your program! ❤
The crane footage is epic! This is your best planting video ever. Your explanation of soil, fertilizer, amendments, plants, varieties and their needs was informative, clear and concise with excellent video of the planting process. Well done!
Cranes must have heard you were planting your garden and stopped by to celebrate..Awesome work y'all! Can't wait to watch the growing and the harvest. Here's to an Epic Garden year!
@UCq655gua8hqxmcBMp9ppLKA I was laughing so hard at them dancing around. I’m from Fl as well but have never seen those. I was assuming those were birds from there. Lol. I wish I could say our hot days are in the 70’s instead of the 90’s.
You guys are amazing! You do such a great job planning and cultivating and using your produce. I am so inspired by your thriving lifestyle up in the frontier. Its a really great example of how two people can do so much with determination, hard work and love of your life. Loved those sandhill cranes too!!
Life doesn't get any better, I've worked all afternoon in my own veggie garden, beer in hand, and checked what's on UA-cam.... Simple Living Alaska!!!! 🎉🎉🎉
Of all of the things I have watched you guys do, the garden each year is my favorite. How you developed that from bare ground and how incredible your starts look just amazes me!! Hoping for a great season guys, oh, and here is to incredible weather this week! Hahhahhahah
Have you ever thought about having a flat or 2 of mesclun growing indoors through the winter so you have some fresh greens to eat? My great Aunt taught me a trick for the second year bearing berries. You take some latex paint and mark all the fruiting canes. Then next spring, you cut out all those marked canes, and mark all the other ones. The plant will fruit on those marked canes, while next years will be growing. There's only searching and tracing back canes on the first year. It's an awesome, easy system. Try it!
Not just the best 'simple living' channel but a cornucopia of amazing gardening technique's that inspire the raised bed and a plethora of other tips to see things grow.
One more thing keep your ash from your wood burner. Especially for your potatoes planting. It acts as a nutrient for your spud planting. For anything in your garden. When you clean out your ash from your wood burner all winter, keep some large bins and store your ash for what you are doing now. Scatter on your garden once thawed. You wil get amazing results. 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍💙💖
I can't believe Eric doesn't "accidently" squirt you when watering. When I was young we used a brand new Case front loader, which, more importantly, had a AM/FM radio. I would be plowing, seeding, cutting, raking, and bailing listening to Led Zepplin, Pink Floyd, Aerosmith. . . Do you guys listen to music while doing chores? The cranes are incredible. The silly mating dance they do, throwing dirt clods. Thank you for the great video.
Some music YT will call copyright and will take down your videos if you have or have not paid for the rights to us those songs, they probably pay for the music she occasionally uses with her aerial shots or animals. It’s sad.
Thanks for the cranes. I have huge flocks of them fly over headed your way and love listening to their strange cries as they fly, sometimes 100 of them all going at once, it's a very alien sound. Nice to see them at their destination.
Just a little tip which I pass on as it was passed on to me. When planting out anything have a watering can with water/liquid fertiliser in it. Add a splash to the hole before planting. Gives everything a really good start and encourages roots to grow down.
Am almost jealous to see how close you're to nature, yet I'm still too dependent on some form of luxury.. But damn having those cranes on your land....that is special...alomost priceless
Oh my gosh! When the cranes call you can see their breath😮😀 Your garden is always so beautiful. Bandit is starting on his lake front water construction for the warm season. I think Beau has the same plans summer or winter.
These are my favourite episodes I love anything to do with planting or snow clearing in fact anything around the homestead are my fav oh and the cabin episodes also 👌
It's staggering to see how much work goes into gardening for food source for just 2 people. Rest assured you have such a short growing season in which to start, grow, harvest and can. Your lifestyle requires a lot of dedication and work. Nice job Eric and Ariel!
How many chicks do you have now? Gardening vlogs are my favorites. You can plant peppers a lot closer together than other veggies. They hold each other up when they are heavy with fruit. They just need more water and nutrients.
I spent the day in my little yard in Minneapolis, digging and getting my hands dirty. So here you both are today making us feel so happy. I hope you two know how much joy you give to us. And once again, I have to mention that my old dad would have loved watching you. ❤️
Everything has been said about this gardening video so I will comment on the t-shirts. Great t-shirts Arielle. I like the colors of the peach/ pink one and the frills of the blueish.
How in the world did you get that awesome footage of the cranes?? It took my breath away! I always look forward to your videos but this was just an unexpected surprise that I just had to stop rewind and watch again! LOVE IT!!!!
It's amazing how many seeds you started in your Cabin. Every year I forget how back breaking gardening is in the beginning but it is all worth it. Love watching you guys. Looking forward to more gardening videos this season. Happy gardening!

Great video! I just moved into 10 acres, I’m trying to fix up an old cabin and starting a veggie garden. I’m 22 trying to stay out of big cities where day by day gets harder and more dangerous to live in. Just started my channel and let’s see how it goes. That was pretty cool seeing the sand hill cranes doing their little mating dance . Love he was flinging sods around trying to impress her. Your garden is awesome guys. 🇨🇦💖
What I liked best about your channel is the respect by which you go about your growing, harvesting and using what you have put by whether it is from your own garden or nature-moose fish, etc. Thank you.
If you have access to black plastic you could put that down in winter after you put your snow on the beds. It will help heat up the soil and suppress those weeds.
Omg never heard cranes, yes we have them, but they just fly over, they remind me of peacocks loud & noisy. Reminds me of past years planting a huge garden ,now just a few planters. Don't know about Alaska, but I always mowed down my raspberries in the fall after they stopped bearing fruit, came back stronger with bigger berries. May you be blessed with a bountiful growing season. 😊🇺🇲

I can’t wait for y’all to go back out to the cabin it’s so beautiful and relaxing there, and hopefully you will get some pike next time. From the view at the garden your house looks so beautiful, what a fantastic job. Love 💕 y’all
A good way to separate those onion seedlings is to put the whole works into a bucket of water and swoosh it around. That results in very little root breakage when you do this.
Can’t wait until harvest! People love how I incorporate small groups of flowers within my vegetable garden It just adds a splash of color within all the green
I do the same…it looks great and attracts pollinators plus I added a whole bunch of medicinal flowers like echinacea, chamomile and a big amount of nasturtiums

The garden looks great. BUT
You are so fortunate to have the Sandhills cranes on your property!
Tip: If you take your onions and put them in just enough water to cover the roots and pull them apart it makes it a lot easier to separate them.
