Preparing for the Next Level - How to Kayak

  • A few months ago, P5 and I made a goal to run his first waterfalls this summer. Everything we have done thus far is building to that moment. Some of the work is fun, some is more like work. In any case, progress is the goal. Sometimes a trip back to an easier river is what you need to see that progress. After several trips to the Boilin Hole on the Mayo River, we return to kayak the Dan River at Kibler Valley to gauge our improvement. My son especially has been putting in a lot of time and effort building the fundamental skills needed to go to the next level. We have been doing frequent flat water skill days as well as taking on harder moves while on the river. All that work is evident on this run and will soon pay off. He has all the tools now to step up his kayaking. This run was very recently at or above the skill level of the group. Coming back to this run to watch them ace it was very inspiring to all involved! Kibler Valley is a beautiful run in its own right and a fantastic place to prepare for the next level.
Tarheel Paddlers Association was on the river today. They were giving back by repairing the bridge to a riverside property.
We also dive into a little DIY Footbrace Bulkhead project on Evan's new Remix 47!
Come along and watch the progress on a great run capped by a week of firsts!

Really wish I could have the hangar space for all the gear like you have. Sadly living in central London, it's a bit tricky😂 Very jealous.

The electric carving knife that folks use to carve the turkey or roast beef goes through foam like butter if you wanna make quick easy accurate cuts in just about any foam. 🤷‍♀️

Right on TrevorDean! Congrats! It is the coolest thing when one day you are hitting the road pre-dawn to go bomb a river together. I know I have these last few fleeting years with him. It goes so amazingly fast! Enjoy the ride!!!

Glad you could use the P 10 plate in all of this outfitting. I was really impressed with the fabrication of Evan's bulkhead! The boys killed it out there on Kibler Valley!!! Hope to see your River Kings & Kids crew on the water soon!

Evan truly has some natural abilities and so does Pete for sure but like anything it takes more than one person to make these things happen.
I want to do a shout out to Pete Beck Kyle and Team River Runner and the whole community of paddlers that they have introduced us to that have made all of this happen..
      Forever Grateful.

I just stumbled upon your channel and I have to say that I really enjoy the fact that you're a bunch of ordinary guys running ordinary rivers, I've subbed!
As much as I can enjoy videos of pro paddlers running epic drops and g5+ rivers the reality is that that is never going to be something that I nor the vast majority of paddlers shall ever, realistically, be able to do. On the other hand what you guys are doing is very, very achievable for pretty much anyone who has the chance to get in a boat - and for that I love it.
(Though I'm still a little mystified as to why you went with a full face helmet and elbow pads for that particular run. :))

Thanks Jonathan! I used to run class 5 all the time (with waterfalls in the 40ish foot range). Our crew was small and tight. Those were great memories. Then I had some kids and chasing rain every weekend wasn't feasible. I ended up doing a 240 mile source to sea trip solo. I had several non-kayaker buddies that wanted to join me on a similar trip...THUS, the River Kings were born. Most of my videos since then are the documentation of our trips. I have also added several videos that can benefit them as we get them up to speed.
You are also totally correct. Watching world class kayakers on the top of their game can really motivate and captivate the viewer but has little other benefit for the novice/lesser experienced and skilled paddlers out there. I have been trying to make vids that not only highlight all of our memories, but also can help the everyday kayaker from casual rec boating to beginner/intermediate ww. Hopefully it is working. There are not a lot of these resources out there. I think watching a new boater getting trashed and breaking that down can be much more informative and educational for the viewer (as that is where they are themselves) than watching a pro that is so far above that level that there is a big disconnect.
As far as the full face goes, when ww paddling around newer kayakers, the flailing paddles, out of control boats and crazy situations I get in with them are far more dangerous than the river. LOL!!! I usually just wear them anyway as I dont even notice them anymore and if they save a knock on the face or elbow once a year, I call it good.
Thanks for the kind words! I am glad the vids and channel are connecting! Thanks for the support!
