It is one of the biggest known galaxies in the visible universe, having a diameter of around 6 million light-years.
IC 1101 is categorized as a cD galaxy, which indicates it contains a large halo of stars around its main core. These galaxies are frequently observed near the cores of galaxy clusters and are thought to have evolved via the mergers of numerous smaller galaxies over billions of years.
The mass of IC 1101 is believed to be around 100 trillion times that of the Sun, making it one of the most massive galaxies known. Its immense size and mass indicate that it has been involved in countless galaxy mergers over its history, acquiring stars and other galactic material in the process.
