    I absolutely love the way the petals are splayed to reveal the seed pod and the stamens. That one flower is a beautiful focal point. It holds its own and is alive like a ribbon dancer. Just when I think I have a favourite painting, you create one I like even more.

      Thank you!!! I’ve been “chasing” a good reference photo for 2 years 🥰 finally in June I found these giant poppies in Edwards gardens in Toronto - and baby gave me juuuuuust enough time to run in and snap a million photos 😊 I took a few pictures of the cool pink ones too so may introduce them again some time this year 💜💕 have a wonderful week ahead!

    Poppies, poppies, poppies! 🧙‍♀️ So lovely! Since you have brought in a butterfly, I'd love to see different plants that attract butterflies--scabiosa, asclepias, monarda, liatris, etc. Many of them are compound flowers with complex shapes, so definitely challenging to figure out values, contrast, etc.

    Anna, this painting is glorious! The colors are stunning and rich, your shading is exciting and your butterfly is the perfect foil! I love the peak into the center of the poppy. Those colors set the reds off beautifully. Absolute perfection…again! Thank you for taking us along for the ride. Your creativity and skill are amazing!♥️

    I feel so much better. My level of painting is pretty much your draft version. That being said, if I had the time and patience to do every painting 2-3 times in a row, I know I’d be able to fix a lot of my mistakes.
    Red flowers are SO hard because you have to see those subtle color differences. You did great!

    So excited for this month’s patreon tutorial. I love poppies and butterflies! I also tend to go for cool colors like you do, so this will be a nice nudge to explore the beauty of warm reds and oranges 😊

      Now I understand why you advised getting the dot charts- this walk-through of your process is quite eye-opening! Such a difference from the loose style painting...and exquisite in a way the loose style could never be. Gorgeous!! TY for this gift 💖

    For those of us who try to save and compare pigments DaVinci’s Quinacridone red is the same pigment as quinacridone coral by Daniel Smith and those who have pyrrol scarlet PR255 that is the same pigment as the Napthol red or scarlet red by Winsor and Newton. Sometimes it can be a bit confusing especially if the same name is used for different pigments. Daniel Smith has a quin rose which is called by Sennelier Rose Lake Madder PV19 and they look the same , same pigment but Qor and Sennelier’s did not have a drying shift that dulled like DS. Also to go a it darker in the permanent alizarin area DaVinci has the one pigment PV19 that is a bit darker and warmer. There are so many reds and the perylene ones are beautiful. Little bit of this info helps others to be able to save a bit. Daniel Smith has pyrrol scarlet PR255 which is the same as Winsor and Newton’s deep scarlet pigment or Napthol red which is gorgeous. I haven’t compared the 2 side by side because I fell in love with the DS version but maybe I will yet. My favorite reds also. Thank you Anna I have been finishing other projects but had in mind to do a poppy/ sparrow composition and I appreciate your technique. Oh my goodness we have such similarities in opinion of taming the color lion. I love color and love the vibrancy of your paintings. Thank you!

    Thank you for this. I purchased some new watercolours recently. I used a list of colours from one of your previous videos as I wanted new colours I'd not tried before but I wanted them to work together. In the end I was only able to get W&N or Daniel Smith. I did get a introductory set of QoR online. I'm still looking for other brands because I want to try them. I was trying to stick to Australian suppliers. I first learned to paint in oils back in the mid 1960's and have used oil or acrylic mostly since then. But I want to get back into watercolour. Last time I used watercolour was in the mid 2000's but I wasn't doing botanical art. I've been fretting about getting started. I want to do flowers and birds and landscape and portraits. To use watercolour, I had decided I need to do some sort of a test painting to work out the colours to use and then I see this video and that's exactly what you are doing so now I'm sure that's what I need to do. I have been worrying I wasted my money on the new watercolours because I have only swatched them so far. Love the colours. Scarlet Lake is one of the colours I have used since I first started learning to paint. I don't know if I've got it in watercolours though. I'll have to check. I will get onto it soon. I've been a bit preoccupied over the past few months with getting over Covid and then I got another cold that I'm trying to get rid of now. I'm still not convinced I will be able to discipline myself to do the botanical paintings. I have more success with coloured pencils but even with them I tend to have a loose approach. Only time will tell. But I will check to see if I have scarlet lake and if not that'll be on my list to purchase. I have thousands of floral photos to work from as I've been photographing flowers for decades now. Thanks for the inspiration. At the moment I'm mostly interested in colours. I don't think I'd have the patience to sit through an entire long tutorial. I do enjoy the short videos you do though.

    Anna, I’ve just opened my first ever Qor watercolor basic palette. These colors do everything you’ve explained: vivid colors. Full value spectrum WIth each tube, and I would have walked miles had this palette lacked your Dioxazine purple favorite. I was surprised at the near black color of the paint straight from the tube.
    An additional feature revealed itself: the paint solution diffuses into brush

    • @maryhill7999
      @maryhill7999 2 роки тому

      This penetration within my brush required get up and deliberately clean the brush after each color. No sizzle swizzle and on to the next color with these gorgeous colors. Perhaps you have a special method I’ve not discovered. If so come clean and share. These colors make the extra time worthwhile so I don’t muddy my colors.
      Thank you!

    Hi .... yesterday I tried sticking watercolour paper with matte medium onto a balsawood panel...and dried it ..it didn't buckle at all despite doing wet on wet
