  • Woke up to an unexpected voicemail from a tree service company looking for a place to drop chips. After the drop-off, my brother and I spent the day chipping what we could!

    What to Expect on our Channel:
    Tiny Hilltop is the digital life-form of Nate and Evan's journey toward food self-sufficiency. Videos will include organic gardening, greenhouse gardening, and starting an orchard using permaculture concepts when possible. We hope that our videos can bring the peace and tranquility we feel when growing food amongst the trees. We would be honored if you chose to follow along on our journey!
    Tiny Hilltop Background:
    Nate has been dealing with chronic health issues for over a decade. The worst of it starting in 2011, taking me from 200lbs to 150lbs in a few months. He was mostly bedridden, requiring a wheelchair to leave the house for nearly three years. Liver and immune issues caused him to develop a sensitivity to chemicals. That started his journey towards living remotely, designing a non-toxic tiny house, growing his own food, and attempting to be as self sustainable as possible. Starting in 2020, Evan, will be doing most of the heavy lifting but Nate will still be involved with planning and production of videos.
    Thanks For Watching!

    Wood chips are beautiful sight! When we have a certain plan, it's impossible to NOT be excited about a load of chips arriving. We have a load coming as soon as I give him the day. Be excited Nate, and we'll join in and be excited with you!! :) TFS ♥

    Not a fan of snakes in general, but ribbon snakes like the one at the beginning of your video are SO cute. I called one in the yard once and it slithered up through the grass like a pet dog. I sat next to one in a sun patch and had a lovely chat for about ten minutes.. we were just looking at each other and it cocked its head at me like it understood. 😀

    • @wanderingspider8988
      @wanderingspider8988 Рік тому

      That is a Garter Snake not a Ribbon Snake. Closely related but Ribbons are generally partially aquatic and much, much more slender. Garters get heavier bodies with that fatter head and tend to be more terrestrial and eat even small mammals. Ribbons tend to feed more on fish and aquatic vertibraes but will eat some small lizards and even insects.

    The chip struggle os real here dude. Been on a list with the tree company that subs from the power company for over 2 years. Couple weeks ago they were working less than a mile from my house..I stopped and asked three days in a row with a promise to drop all i wanted each time. Then they just never came. I offered to pay the driver and everything...a little frustrating

    • @TinyHilltop
      @TinyHilltop  6 років тому +2

      Man, that sounds frustrating. I tried to get on the power company list but they just kept passing me around from department to department.

      Subscribe to: getchipdrop.com. You will get a free load when one of their subscribing arborist are in your area. The service is free to you, but the tree company pays $20 to chipdrop. If you pay $20,, the company gets to drop for free. You're almost guaranteed to get a drop. Good luck!

      @@ronkane4426 So true, I just got a load of chips 11-14-18. But I was willing to pay $20 so the arborists was allowed to drop free to them! I waited about 4 months. I received an email about 2 hours before they arrived.
      I also checked that I'm willing to take a few logs. It was about 85% wood chips 15% logs. Which is ok, I'm going to make firewood. 😎

    Wonder how that worked out. I put carboard down and then chips on top but it made soil sour. Too much carbon. It took 2 years for the chips to break down and make good soil. The chips make a great walkway though. Nothing will grow in them. Around the fruit trees is good too. But not in the vegetable garden

    Leave them in a pile keep the heat in that's when they decompose the best

  • @paulweakley3440
    @paulweakley3440 Рік тому

    I know this video is 4 years old... and you probably already know this... but if you let a new pile of chips get wet and sit for 10-14 days, you'll get a ton of composting effect and wayyyyy faster breakdown in the long run.
