  • Every year, the number of animals euthanized in the shelter population is equivalent to twice the population of San Francisco.
Combine this with the fact that only 3% of all charity donations go to help animals and the environment combined and you can see that there is plenty of work to be done.
There is hope however, and we can all make a difference. The reality is that the conversation needs to change from helping with people OR animals to people AND animals.
The benefits of bringing a rescue dog or cat (or rabbit or horse…) into our lives can be unbelievably powerful. This simple decision has the potential to be truly life-changing.
Carol Novello, and her organization Mutual Rescue, collect stories of the transformative effect that rescue animals have been proven to have time and again.
And for those of us who don’t have space in our homes for a new furry family member, Carol gives us the language, avenues, and permission needed to support the global pet population in a way that will pay us back and improve the world many times over.

Having cats really is a life changing experience, but taking them from the shelter and seeing how they transform from 'don't touch me' into cuddle animals during years, and how their trust in you just grows every day, that's completely another dimension of 'life changing'.
I've never had a cat or dog in my life before adopting my two blobs of darkness, and people around me who had them never seemed really bonded, especially with cats. They were just there, eat, sleep and that's it. The warmth that goes through me whenever they come to cuddle and I just drop everything to cuddle back, is something every human being should have a chance to feel, it's really transformative experience. And then when you get your dose every few days (because, not every day they give you THAT special cuddle), you're just head over heels :D
    Incredible.
And yes, I also have a feeling that they know / understand they got second and third chance (in our case), and they stoically 'suffer' through things they don't like because I"m doing it and they know I want them good, like, giving meds, puting creams, hell even holding while vet tackered his head after he pulled the stitches from biopsy done the day before  And he hated the e-collar, but he didn't hate me despite that I was the one putting it on him.
And that guy was an aggressive cat when he got to shelter, but he never hurt me and he's always extra careful when he swats me during our plays. Yes, I can push him belly up, and lightly blow air in his belly today - talking about how high the trust is, when he came he'd literraly run away if you tried to pet him for 2 seconds, just one was more than enough
Another one had just too short fuse (to sensitive nerves) and would bite out of the blue, and seriously. Now he knows to 'bite as a sign' if I ignore his other signs (that he now actually shows). So we both learned our limits, and we both push them a bit more and grew a lot :)
Incredible creatures that definitely made our lives richer :)
