Hi, I enjoy your content, you have a great relaxed manner. I have had a bookshop for 25 years , sell a bit online but find both Amazon & ebay expensive & a pain. I sell much more over the counter and great for buying
I have 250k books
100k in the shop 4500sq feet and rest in storage- I recommend getting a shop on your own don’t go in with others, work from there, the stock will definitely come to you- pay cash not shop credit.
Keep going with what works for you now from there but with a shop your ASP will increase- we have to beat people off with a stick bringing stock ( that’s why I have so much )
Happy to help in any way Viv
( Astley Book Farm )
Lucky enough to be quite close to Astley Book Farm 😁 - great place for us bookworms ☺️👍
I’m near the book farm too x
I only sell around $600 (AUD) in books on ebay a month. But I work a very busy day job so it's just some $ on the side. I'm actually building my own website which will include books, trading cards and art. The fees on ebay are hectic. I decided that I want to build my own thing and what you said about community is spot on. Community is the vibe I want to build into it. We'll see what 2025 brings! Thanks for the super chill vids 👍
Interesting idea about the pop up shop. Around my area in West Norfolk you see shared shops/ barns etc for antiques & collectibles but I’ve never seen anything with broader spectrum items as it seems your Kilmarnock shop will have. I prefer to support small local business so Good Luck!. A selection of small sellers on eBay to support is also a brilliant idea! I choose my seller very carefully on eBay & don’t support Amazon nowadays ( tho at one stage I did sell books thru Amazon 😉) Find your videos very relaxing to watch, thanks.
Hello Ian (or are you an Iain? I used to be married to an Iain who hailed from the Glasgow area). I love your accent, calm manner and attitude. But I sit here every time worrying about you because you really are selling these book bundles too cheaply. Please increase your prices. Even if you are uncomfortable, just have a go. Don't sell a "good" quality book for less than £3.00 a piece in a bundle, preferably £4.00 and charge postage, even if it's a flat rate nominal amount, on top. You'd still be a good deal but would make a little more for your efforts. You seem to have more confidence pricing hardcover books.
If the bundle is scruffy price it higher but put a "sale" on it so that people feel like they are getting a bargain. I don't have an Ebay shop, although I'm wondering if I should try it to reach a different market. I have my own web shop. I used to be scared to death of charging money for my stock, which is self-adhesive tapes. I tried to charge as little as possible. I was worn out and barely breaking even. I felt like a criminal putting prices up at first because I knew most of my customers and they felt it OK to moan at me for the price of things or for the cost of shipping. But I soon realised that I don't need to pander. If some think it's too expensive then fine, they won't buy. Someone else will. I have to pay quite a lot of rent for my warehouse and of course I need a salary. It was a very successful little business prior to Brexit, but that has totally hammered me. I used to sell about 40% of my sales into the EU. That all dried up rapidly and now I get very few EU sales, those I do get are tiny. And sadly half of them get returned because the customer refuses to pay their postal service the taxes due or they just get lost in the system and eventually returned!
As for post office, can you not use the Drop and Go service? I used that for a few years until last year. It was great. Just labelled everything up and put them in sacks and waltz to the front of the queue and drop the bags over the gate for them to process later. No waiting. Now my post lady brings the labels with her because I buy my postage online. It's cheaper so that I can afford to use the tracked service without charging my customers more for it. I leave the parcels in bags in a shed and she picks them up and puts the labels on (obviously I have to have my own delivery note on the packet or she would not know what was what). It works really well.
Love your channel, it’s become a great bit of company every day while I’m working from home.
Just curious about why you don’t use Royal Mail’s free collection service?
Thanks for the vids!
I tried it in the past but they were so random with collection times it meant I couldn’t get out to do anything else. Thanks for your support. Iain.
@@Bundlesofbooks1974Oh no, that’s a shame! I’m lucky that my postie comes at roughly the same time (between 8-10am) and if I’m not in he collects from a recycling bin near the front door. I’ll take a minute to be more appreciative of this now 😂😂
Hope the ‘pop up’ or shop works out…. Also your community engagement is a great idea… keep up the great work… regards John
Just started selling more seriously on my ebay. Lots of stuff but focussing on what I loved as a teen, sci fi and fantasy books. Accumulating full series of vintage books is fun. I dont get why modern reissue covers are so boring and pictureless. The old novels and great art are better.
Opportunity comes along once in a while. Jump on it if you can afford to. Formulate a plan and if there’s no long term contracts, go for it. Especially if you don’t have to be physically present from 8-5pm 6 days a week. It can’t hurt. 👍
Thank you Ian x
Have you ever thought about going to auctions for your books I go to an auction every week and there is big box Fulls of books sold for pennies every week
it's many years since i sold books on ebay. increasing postal charges really started to kill it. never occurred to me to sell bundles to get a bigger sale.
Your thumbnail for this video has been bugging me for days as it rang a bell from the past but just could not click. I realised it's a very similar pose by Brett Anderson from Suede but minus the cigarette. I'd be very surprised if this was intentional.
Completely unintentional… but fools seldom differ.
Are proof and advance copy’s worth any extra?
Most of the time they are. Can make a big difference of a popular author.
Did you find the books you were looking for whilst out on your hunt? If i have spares I'm happy to pass them on to you. Let me know which titles they are.
