Too many changes and glitches on eBay are impacting sales far more than economic factors. Constant glitches, the recent changes with fees etc. it's gotten too complicated for many. Vinted is easier but doesn't have the international exposure eBay has so the money isn't as good despite what some popular UA-camrs say. Buy cheap, sell quickly and taking a small profit cut to shift stock and raise capital is the best course of action in my opinion

I sell books as well on Ebay and this year has been shockingly bad, i have two shops and going to close one this week, the sells are just not coming in. Going to give Vinted a go and a couple of the other platforms, if something doesn"t get better will be time to look for another job.

Don't beat yourself up. It's Ebay that sucks, not you. It's not the government, it's not the economy and it's not the war in Ukraine. It's those utter Ebay melts and their constant tampering and manipulation of search results. You can only promote so much before prices need to go up as that is the only feasible option to appease these bandits. It could well be that the top 10% big book dealers on Ebay gobble up 90% of transactions. I've no idea about your financial situation but if you can hold out until you can start drawing your first Vinted cash then that two week lag period will have elapsed. You will have verification to go through in the future with Vinted which could stop your cash flow completely as they are infamous for knocking you back over and over. Someone on one of the groups finally got verified after 27 attempts which is outrageous.

Sorry it's slow. Not sure this is worth sharing however... I'm sure people used to take out Google AdWords to push up traffic to their listings. Google would give free credits.

Its the climate as well as time of year. Labour are ruining the economy and people do not have the spare money that was around previously. Sadly this is going to get worse.

Hi Ian not having a dig at you but you have to be looking to get more than £1 a book. you are fortunate to be able to pick books up for under 50p each but do not seem to take advantage of that. You give away far too many books (buy 3 -2 free etc especially when that puts the postage over the top) Am working towards a similar business but i live in SE London and dream of being able to pick books up as cheap as you can. Hope things pick up for you quickly.

Always think January is slow and into February, probably always my slowest months for selling books. I'm a private seller selling my books so not such a big deal as it is just a declutter but it is always nice to see a sale or two coming in for the effort of putting the listings up and then the packing and wandering along to the post office.

You have put me off vinted for those postage options. Happy to just keep it simple on ebay with post office second class tracked 48 for all my books, have no time to be bopping all over the place to send it via evri, etc. Is ebay crap, well possibly. I am certain they could make the site far easier to find things and promote items in a better way. Listing on ebay has improved and it is a lot faster now but still think the search on ebay is dire for looking for items - so I imagine it must be much the same for any of my listings, also the product pages look they were designed for 1990 or so

Take the fast pound over the slow fiver. Your STR on V is way better than on E because E are hiding your books. You also need to not just look at that sale as an isolated transaction but your numbers as a whole across the month which you 100% will do anyway. If you have slightly more for sales plus the VAT rebate then fair enough BUT the other two back ground costs come into play which indirectly dilute profits. First is the shop fee ( featured ) which is £92.40 for 1500 listings plus 6p per insertion per month there after. I've no idea what your Ebay sales volume would be typically in orders ( not number of books be it in bundles or multi quantity purchases ) but let's just pretend it's a hypothetical 400 orders per month and also pretend that for simplicity you used exactly your 1500 featured shop BIN insertion allowance and nothing over and above. If we take £92.40 and divide by 400 sales in the month each transaction needs to have 23p siphoned off towards these costs. The other thing being the STR. You could have typically less profit per sale ( yet still a bottom line that works for you ) but what if your sales volume became 3-4 times on V what it is on E? This would then mean that at any given time you'd have less money tied up in stock not moving and get more out of what is listed giving you better value per spend overall as stock spend per month/year is a balance where you need to spend to generate sales but have that balance where spend is not disproportionate. What also goes against E is that we exist in a culture where 10% promoted is socially acceptable ( how in the hell did we allow E to manipulate us to be in this situation as they gave us the rope ) so that with the VAT it's 12% on top of everything else and yet less than a decade ago these bribes did not exist. E had a captive audience and knew that they could get away with it because the alternatives were poor. Now though their cost of doing business is actually a tool that they indirectly use against themselves without V even having to make any moves. Like you say, we subtract the postage and the fees plus bribes and the VAT on top to arrive at our bare bones E bottom line which then allows us to see how we can sell cheaper on V yet be no worse off plus if you apply the background shop fees it's another stealth deduction. I'd not list multiple quantities of the same book at the same time either. Fair enough if you had a hard back and a paper back they are entirely different. I'd just have those other 5 copies ready to replace the one that sold so as to avoid too many slaps on the wrist from V to safeguard your account.

Ebay is Dead

I buy quite a lot of books on Ebay - I wish I could buy from you, but I'm in Australia :) One thing I always look for are photos of the edges of the book - to see if the pages are yellowed or if there is any foxing, etc. Have you ever thought about taking a couple of extra photos and increasing your prices slightly - even if it is just one more photo (of the top of the book). If choosing between two books (from 2 different sellers), I always go for the one that shows the condition of the pages (even if it is slightly more expensive) so that I know exactly what condition the book is in.

I've shared your channel on my comments on the book UA-camrs I watch, hopefully they can check out your channel and boost your views. You have some really nice books and ones I don't usually see. Your videos are really improving, sound, picture quality and the background all good going forward for your You tube. It's really refreshing to see a UA-camr listen to his audience andto be constantly striving to be better and better, I wish you all the luck! Super Vinted are fantastic, Ebay are atrocious!

everytime i list multiple items using the same photos Vinted message me to STOP or i will be shot at Dawn and the listings get removed ! I end up putting a little note with item number on it in the next lot of pics.(private seller not business)

I would expect ebay sales to get worse now that they have disabled the app for anything below Android 10.

Did you get your bulk DVD's in a single haul or do you have somewhere that regularly lets you have stock cheap or free

We started Vinted Pro at the beginning of this year and sold a few items before they sold on ebay. Vinted is easy to list and another outlet which is only a good thing?! Etsy was great for older books and you can fetch REALLY good prices. People seem to have more to spend on that platform. Amazon! Hmm?! I screwed it up by FBA' ing everything for half to come back a year later with a hefty bill 😮 I am considering returning to Amazon. Just not doing FBA. I will sell from home and post myself which was alot easier imo. Anyway, enjoying the content and learning from you too :)

Sounds like ebay is heading toward only being used by drop shippers. Especially as they continue to increase fees but not sales. Awesome that vinted is getting you some return on your investment.

When you say you cram full a box of DvDs are they bubble wrapped as well or literally as you said fully packed in tight in a cardboard box and done?

As a Vinted pro seller there is a 14 day waiting period where customers can raise issues with their orders. As soon as that’s complete, your payment goes into your account and you can leave/receive feedback. The only problem I find is that I get a lot more automatic feedback now rather than actual comments from the buyers like I used to.

I really enjoy when you go rambling at a tangent - its always interesting and its good to hear someone who is an expert in their field and have their "financials" at their fingertips.

The trick to selling the better value stuff on V is to always factor in the inevitable 40% off offer. Say you have a book on E that sells for a tenner all in. If we say that fees are 20% and it's £3 to post then £2 fees plus £3 postage is £5 to leave you with £5. If you were to list it at £8 on v and they make the predictable discount it would be £4.80 and bring you back to £5 after the kick back. It makes no difference as a Pro Seller if the buyer messages you to say they are happy. Funds are not released until 14 days after delivery plus they cannot leave feedback until then either hence so many Pro sellers having auto feedback as many buyers wont be interested after that length of time.

Of course you are getting better traction on Vinted as Ebay do the level best to hold you back. Would be amazing if Vinted became your main gig and Ebay was relegated to the side hustle as it's where I now am and after a decade of feeling jaded by Ebay and their increasingly Draconian schemes things feel like they can sell at any time on Vinted with daily sales looking promising after building Vinted up from nowt for the past 3 months.

I think because you are a vibted pro seller the buyer doesn't have the confirm all ok option. They just get a longer period to report an issue if that makes sense.

I've not listed anything over 2kgs on vinted for that reason. It's not very clear as loads of sellers are selling stuff over 2kgs. I might just try it and see what happens. Thanks for covering this.

Iain I downsized my shop to basics 3 years ago and sales remained at around the same level as I was getting when paying for featured. As an aside Marian Keyes sells well on Vinted.

I have it on good authority from folks who have been selling on Vinted for years that you will not be charged. If you had made up a bundle of 13 books and said that it had been in the 1-2kg weight class then you'd be at fault. You have absolutely zero control over the bundles that buyers can propose and equally zero control over amending that weight either. You cannot be held accountable for something you have no control over. You have as much say so over this as if it will rain or not next Tuesday.

It depends on the make and model and age of your car. I recall in your previous video that you said you were still paying it off so hopefully you have some kind of insurance also particular to that. If the car is just a wee run around it wont take too much damage for the insurers to just write it off, especially with something as big as a van going into it. You may be seeing panel and cosmetic damage but chassis could be slightly bent and all manner of mechanicals shot as sometimes the cosmetic damage can be fixed but mechanically the car might not be up to VOSA safety standards undeneath to go back on the road. Should they write it off it sucks being in a one car household as you ideally need a car to then go and search for a replacement. Could even get yourself a wee compo claim through Digby Brown for your injury should it be worse than you thought at first.

I'm currently flipping between ebay and building my own website. I have a regular, very intensive, day job, and ebay is easy. I feel my own website is the smart move long term but it takes sooo much longer to list because I'm editing the photos. I need to tinker with it and figure out the best process like you mention with vinted. If listing on my website was just as fast as ebay I wouldn't think twice about where to spend my limited time.

That Dr Adam book is very funny! You are so right when you say it’s worth it if it gets one person reading or reading more. I grew up without a TV (my parents were strange I thought) and between the three of us we read the local library dry! Once a fortnight on Friday evening we’d set off to walk there with mum’s shopping trolley and come back with our 3 permitted books. After the dinner washing up was done we all sat and read until bedtime. Dad also did crosswords. I still don’t have a TV. Never had one. When it came to it I just didn’t want it enough to bother. Reading has always been important. But in the last 10 years I’ve veered away from fiction to politics. Frankly, I’m exhausted by politics for the moment and so now I’m getting back into fiction. I love crime, mystery and romance. I won’t read horror. Can’t stand it. Tonight while watching you I picked up 3 Philiper Gregory books. I like her writing, I have a few, but haven’t read her for a while. When I’m done I will put them into the village hall volunteer free library because there are a couple of older women in the village who are a bit skint on pension and I know they love her books. In one video you could tell us how you got interested in reading and what you enjoyed reading when younger compared to now. My style has certainly changed. You do light up when you talk about reading so it’s obviously something you love.

Keep up the good work...I think you are doing a great job...January is always a bad and unpredictable month within retail...Always has been and always will be...I suggest taking your holiday in January early February...go somewhere nice, do things you like doing instead of getting downhearted or feeling miserable. It just isn't going to happen. Give your mind a rest, it's probably the best thing you can do right now. You are now on ebay and Vinted...List as much as you can on Vinted and then just process the orders and just take a break....You will burn out if you don't....I really wish you well.
