I was surprised that I've never heard of any of these books until the announcement. I'm happy that Karen Lord is on the list representing the Caribbean 😊

I don't pay a lot of attention to prizes, but I do enjoy occasionally watching booktube videos about prize longlists! The youtube algorithm sent me here and I really enjoyed your video. All of these books sound absolutely fascinating. I'm particularly interested in the ones set in Sri Lanka and Palestine because learning more about areas with such long histories of conflict is really important. Enjoy your reading!

This was one of the more intriguing lists I’ve seen in years. It is hard to judge these genres against each other though. I read Enter Ghost earlier this year and it’s an all time favorite. I’m interested in several of the ones you mentioned and 8 lives of a century old trickster by Mirinae Lee.

I’ve read none of them ! Enter Ghosts, The Wren The Wren & Soldier Sailor were on my TBR already, but I’ve added quite a few others. This tends to be my favorite book prize .

This tends to be the prize that disappoints me the most for its choices, lack of choices by Black women and winner choices. I'm going got give this longlist the benefit of the doubt since it is diverse in countries. We'll have to wait and see.....

I plan to read Nightbloom, Enter Ghost, 8 Lives of a Century Old Trickster and A Trace of Sun. I'm looking forward to your reviews on the ones you're going to read.

Very enticing selections, Didi. Although I don't usually follow prize lists, long or short, you've tempted me to read a few at some point in the future. Right now, I have enough on my tbr to keep me busy.

Hi, 👋🏽 I'm most intrigued by Hangman and Brotherless Night. Can't wait to hear your thoughts and follow this prize with you. Happy reading!

Yes I'm excited about Brotherless Night. The title is intriguing.

These are the ones I'm the most interested in too plus the Alicia Elliot. I've read Soldier Sailor and Ordinary Human Failings and thought they were both excellent.

I am usually not that interested in the Women's Prize, because it is often leaning too much towards commercial fiction for my taste. But I was interested in reading the books by Claire Kilroy and Megan Nolan anyway and Effie Black and Isabella Hammad might end up on my tbr too.

I've wanted to read Brotherless Night for a while now and it does seem good. I read Nightbloom last year and enjoyed it but I don't see it winning the prize.

Nightbloom's description doesn't sound award winning enough imo either.

Ive only read Soldier Sailor which you're right on that cover, you gotta get ya mind right. She makes the reader feel the overwhelm and magnifies the things that make it worse, so that when the lifeline arrives it is all the more significant.

Ok so I judged correctly. I'm really interested in that one.

I watched quite a few 'prediction' videos and it seems so many people have been surprised by this longlist, as so many books people predicted haven't made it! But generally, most are quite excited by the list as it has some very different novels on it based in countries all around the world. So far, I have ordered three books and reserved two at the library and they are the exact same first five you mentioned!! The book I'm most excited about is Enter Ghost, as I had already preordered the paperback which comes out in a week or so. Anne Enright's The Wren The Wren was the first book I read this year. I really enjoyed it - think I gave it 4.5* It got my reading year off to a good start - so I would be happy to see it make the shortlist. I'm not that fast a reader, so don't think I will get to read that many, but I think Ordinary Human Failings also looks interesting and maybe Hangman and 8 Lives of a Century-Old Trickster. I'm not so sure about Soldier Sailor. I had heard quite a few people talking about it, but I struggle a bit with novels about depression. I haven't forgotten having to read The Yellow Wallpaper for a course at University!!😂

I was hesitant about the Wren The Wren. The last book I read by Enright I thought was good but it didn't blow me away. I believe it was The Gathering. We will see if I manage to read all 6 before April 24th.🤞🏾Happy reading Val!
