  • Before I was diagnosed with ME/CFS I went on a holiday to Madrid, which didn't go to plan because we didn't understand what was wrong with me and therefore I was overworked myself, with activities, walking and socialising, causing my first ever experience with extreme chronic fatigue syndrome symptoms and the subsequent flareup. I also had a really bad experience with a museum guard not letting me rest but sitting down!!

Everyone with ME/CFS is different! So you or someone you know might have a very different experience with ME/CFS than I do at the moment! Also, remember that chronic conditions such as these can change dramatically over time, so my life may look very different to this in the future (and has been A LOT worse in the past).

I had the same issue at many museums before I gave In to using my wheelchair. After covid they took away benches that had been previously usable.

I'm very heat intolerant now and wouldn't have been able to tolerate that at all...I feel you.

I've had to leave so many museums because they have no seats. some rooms in the state modern have benches but a lot of the larger ones don't and I do not get to spend nearly as much time as I like with the art I love

The inaccessibility of these spaces is so sad. More benches, more seats, more thought should go into designing them. I visited Copenhagen with ME, and they had so many lovely art and museum spaces with many, many benches! Highly recommended ❤

At least you have memories of spending time with your mam.
Make mental note to walk the other side if I ever see you sitting on the floor.

i was at a museum in Greece and i sat down on the floor and one of the security guards made me stand up. i felt absolutely awful. museums should be required to have seats in every room or allow people to sit on the floor its not like its hurting anyone

This was a great watch. I recently went out in the city to visit a few museums with my family which has left me with a symptom crash since then, so this feels very topical. I was kind of expecting myself to crash a little but I pushed through more than I should because I really wanted to go and it's been harder to anything since then, which his unfortunate. It's hard to really explain to healthy people what that feels like, when your illness can hold you back from enjoying things you want to enjoy.
Thank you for sharing your story. It's always nice to see other people's experiences. Also, unrelated to the topic, I love your outfit and decor style, it's so distinctive and calming. And the pool story was rather funny! I would never have expected to be standing on it.

Holidays in general are very difficult for cfs. How do you get value for money when you are too tired to enjoy it, miss meals, trips etc. Hard to plan, even harder if you are with others. Cfs affects everything. I'm trying to plan my 1st hol alone and the suggestion is I start small and travel just 45mins to the nearest town! Not my idea of a holiday but then I guess celebrate the small wins?

I had something very similar in an airport after more than 9 hours of stress and being busy: No seating available because they were all taken. I asked someone if I could sit in their seat and they told me no because I have 'young legs capable of standing'. I had that exact thought of 'I could vomit on you right now and you will see you should've moved'. Luckily for them I didn't vomit there but immediately sat on the floor opposite where they were and slumped over and was ill.
Ended up getting some help and by the time I was conscious enough to take in my surroundings, they were gone.
I just hope next time someone asks for a seat, they remember me!
It took a lot of mental restraint to ignore my immediate thought of doing it on them 😂

I bought a seat stick from super drug for £17.99 after 5 years of learning I can't always stand, I also now have a rollator with a seat, knowing what mobility aid to take with me is sometimes a dilemma.

How did you find Madrid? I am from Spain, I have been there several times but I highly recommend you to visit Valencia (my hometown) it is better than Madrid.

Don't you realize that these symptoms were psychosomatic. Your mom wanted do this and that and you just didn't. You hated it! Instead of telling her that you have seen this marked and it's too hot you can't stand it any more... Or saying her to do something what You would like to do, your body resisted.

No, I have a diagnosed condition called ME/CFS which I've had for over seven years, this just happened to be at the beginning before I knew what triggered my symptoms. It has nothing to do with whether I want to do something, I have felt like this and also been prevented from doing things I really want to by ME/CFS countless times.

@@ElinorBrown the word trigger is interesting. That ist actually what I ment. The question ist WHAT triggers you. If you find that out your life would improve.
