He drove 90 minutes to a place that had a battery in stock, and then drove the three hours to find me at a gas station in the middle of nowhere and install it for me. Miss you, dad.

My year 9 science teacher scared me out of ever doing helium by saying that if you breath in too much, it can block oxygen from entering the bloodstream through your lungs, causing you to suffocate and die. I still don't know if it's true or not, but he was my favourite science teacher when I was at school so I'm willing to trust what he said.
To some degree, he's right as Helium would take up space in your lungs and prevent the various processes involving Oxygen and Carbon Dioxide exchanging from happening as Helium is unreactive and would just sit there until breathed out. The key is to moderate how much you sip in and breathe it out as soon as possible so you can get some Oxygen in your lungs. All that helium does to heighten your voice's pitch is to tighten your vocal cords, so there's no real need to take in as much Helium as you can in one go, afaik, a simple breath in and out is enough for some chipmunk shenanigans.
That's why a lot of helium tanks you can buy at the store are actually a mix of helium and oxygen. (Apparently, there were some folks that were using them to 'take the easy way out of life' before they started mixing.)
