  • Bathroom Remodel Part 9: Today, we started installing the subway tiles in our new shower. We had installed subways tiles in the traditional brick pattern above our tub downstairs, but we wanted to try a basketweave subway tile pattern this time. It turned out awesome!

    Great progress! Shout out to your other half for all her work and assistance behind the scenes (and behind the camera). You do a great job of sharing a lot of the nuanced details which existing and potential DIYers appreciate. You're fortunate to have the internet as a valuable resource (didn't exist when we were tackling similar projects in the 80s.)

      Thanks! The internet has been a huge help. Just about every time I start something, I double check on Google. When I start a project that I'm not familiar with, I end up reasearching a dozen different blogs, forums, articles, etc to get an idea of what I'm supposed to do. So when I make my videos, I try to give as much helpful details as I can to hopefully help someone else speed up their research time.

    From what I've learned on TV, supposed to go side to side with the mortar. Up and down can cause them to slide downwards. Hope they stay up! Great videos!

      We were originally thinking of a normal brick style pattern, but going vertical instead of the traditional horizonal way. But we laid out a few patterns on the floor to see what we liked, and the basketweave won hands down.

    sweet tip on the tape and hot glue. Now i dont have to drill a ledger behind the stove for the backsplash. BOOM!

      Awesome, glad to help! Our house was a total fixer up when we bought it too. It was by far the worst house on the street. Plus, we had no renovation experience at all, but we've been able to do almost everything ourselves so far.

    are u tiling the shower floor?? if so u want to do that before the walls get done. if u dont then water runs down the walls and has a seam it can leak through especially when grout cracks. always do the floors first

  • @lauracullen8122

    Won't water in angles where horizontal & vertical tiles take longer to dry, improving mold growth chances? Re: the pattern. Does anyone in house have migraines? I do & that pattern, eventhough all same color, tends to make tiles appear to move. I suppose one could keep eyes closed while showering.

    I thought you have to leave a gap between the tiles so as the wall moves (studs expand and contract with seasons) there is space between the tiles so they can pivot and shift to adjust. The grout cracks, but the tiles don't pop off. Do the new mortars make that not necessary any more?

      SublimeSimplicity
      The tiles have molded tabs on the each side to create the space for grout. No need for spacers

    • @stevenbunn7309
      @stevenbunn7309 2 роки тому

      @@richardupyurass2379 that is completely false. Wall tiles need a minimum 1.5mm spacing to allow for movement. This is a faulty job.

    • @mattwebbs4124
      @mattwebbs4124 2 роки тому

      at least a 1/16 space for grout. if u go tight with the tile its almost impossible to get a sealed water proof shower

    Like the vids but your sound needs lots of improvement. Really need to equalize the volume
