Thank you for the demonstration video. I lost my Singer serger instruction manual a long time ago and was struggling to understand how it works. I finally gave up, put it away, and stopped sewing altogether. Now with your video, I am charged to get back to sewing again and using my new/old serger. Thank you again for making your videoes about sergers.

I have a Pfaff 4862 Coverlock serger that I got 16 years ago. I have used it less than 15 times in all those years because I'm afraid of the stupid thing. However, THIS is the year that I am determined to conquer this fear and USE MY SERGER!! I stumbled upon these tutorials and they are so informative and take the "mystery" out of serging. Chatty Cathie, I bought a serger 11 years ago and have tried several times to figure it out, and could not. lol I just found some videos online that should have come with it on a DVD. I cannot believe I have been relying on the vague manual to figure out how to thread this thing! I have been afraid of mine, as well. But I am determined, like you, to conquer it and finally begin using it. What did people do before UA-cam?!!
Awesome! I bought a very old used serger 3/4 years ago, and tried it once, I found the tension is too tight, I also tried to adjust it, but I failed , so I put in a box and never touched it again. Today I found your video here. I hope I can figure out after watching this video. Thank you.

I just purchased a serger and I'm waiting for it to be delivered... I'm so excited so i thoughi I should start learning how to use them... Masking tape stuck onto the bed of the machine is a good way to avoid losing needles into the belly of the beast.

Hi, I have a serger sitting in my closet for years. I used it many years ago but was not very successful with it. I am now determined to master this machine and make those things I always wanted to. I am so happy to have found this tutorial. But after trying unsuccessfully to just start serging. Something is just not working. I have checked and rechecked my threading. I changed the thread to a better quality thread, but the issue persists. I have an Elna Pro 4 DE. My bobbin thread, the one to the farthest right keeps unthreading. Any ideas of what I might be doing wrong??

After you thread it (before you start sewing) are you able to easily pull about 10 inches of thread through the machine without the thread getting caught on the stool stand?
What is a looper and how is it different from the other thread holders??
Get ya a needle inserter that can hold more than one needle. I use it on my sewing machine but man it’s helpful for sergers too.

petmom ful I got mine online. And the best part was it’s only a few dollars. They say it’s to change the double needles in sergers. But works in a sewing machine too. ESP helpful in my machines with a tiny harps (toys & travel) that’s hard to get my hand in there to do anything.

Nope - it just depends on the stitch that you want to create. Your machine's manual will show you the different stitches that can be created with your particular model. It will also tell how many spools of thread you need, as well as the settings. I hope that this helps.
Couldn't you simply put a piece of tape over the opening while changing needles so, should they fall out of your fingers, they cannot fall into the machine?
on the needle pack there is a number 502L what does that mean
Are serger needles different from regular sewing machine needles? I'm guessing you need specific serger needles, is that right?
Hi, Paula! It depends on your serger. Most newer sergers use regular home sewing machine needles, like these Schmetz needles: goo.gl/H4oNbT - usually sizes 75 - 90 are recommended. What is the make and model of your serger? I'm happy to confirm the needle type for you =)

How often do you change the needles?

I wouldn't recommend this machine for sewing denim. I would invest in a higher end machine if you plan to hem denim regularly. This one is really nice and durable: goo.gl/3gHfCB
Hi am having problems placing back my needles
Make sure that the flat side of your needle is facing the correct direction, as stated in your manual.
My Janome Magnolia serger threads the lower looper differently. You have to pass the thread to the left of the "bed" thread it through a hole on the far side of the looper and pull the thread through to thread the looper.
Manual for Janome Magnolia serger has wrong threading sequence. You need to thread upper looper first, then lower looper, right needle, and then left needle. I found this info out from a dealer and it changed my life!!🧵🧵🧵🧵😊

I've had my serger (in a closet primarily!) for a long time and a few parts are missing - not on the machine but the extras :) I can find the spool covers...are they necessary? I'll order a needle holder. And my cones are serger thread but the larger cones touch each other so they are a bit snug. Should I just leave them on the table while sewing? Thanks for your help. :)
Hi! The thread nets aren't a "must" but they are a big help. For the larger cones, you can use an independent thread stand, just make sure to still pass the thread through all of the thread guides.
I just set them behind the machine since I don't have an independent thread stand...if I ever find some I'll grab them though :)
And re the nets - what exactly do they do?

They help the thread feed better off the spool. If you're really picky about having a perfectly balanced stitch, they're nice to have.

What happens if the needle falls inside? How did you get it out? I had one break off and can't find it :(
Hi, Gabby! I've had that happen before, too! No worries! You should be able to remove the left side body of your serger with a regular screwdriver. While you have it removed, it's recommended to oil and clean out lint. Good Luck!
