    The Lord of the Rings trilogy was a mammoth achievement in cinema, due in large part to its incredible special effects. This video essay examines some of the techniques used to create the size difference of the Hobbits, and how they created the many creatures and locations depicted in the film.

    Thank you so much for watching! I hope you all find this stuff as fascinating as I do! If you're looking for more behind the scenes goodies from Lord of the Rings, check out the Extended Editions on DVD or Blu-ray, tons of great footage and info breaking down the entire process. Also, I made another video that covers a similar subject a while back, discussing The White Stripes music videos directed by Michel Gondry(even using some of the same info from this video) so if you're looking for a good follow up, here's the link! ua-cam.com/video/ZJ0mQZSpWq4/v-deo.html
    Also, really proud to be working with Squarespace on this one, I've loved using my site for a while now and am more than happy to suggest them to you.

      Thanks for making it
      Its the only series were i like the books and movies just as mush because the both have great positive sides to their mediums using them well
      Instead of using it being a movie as their isnt time to put it in
      Even of they take some scenes out the characters and stories are just as good wich is rare in my opinion. And they almost dont have plot holes created by story editing, wouw.❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

      I think there was a lot of studio pressure, if I remember correctly, New Line was almost bankrupt, and they really needed these films out on time or they'd face some serious problems. I've actually heard he's considering directing, which makes me worry. Not because he doesn't have what it takes, but if the series isn't an instant hit, it'll only further hurt his reputation.

      I feel most of the extended scenes were off in terms of pacing. The only scene that I maybe would've had in the official version is the one with the Mouth of Sauron.
      The scene when Sarumann dies is for example a bit off when he shoots the fireball. It doesn't look as good as all the other special effects.

    Holy shit, no wonder Jackson was so sad/mad about the prequel trilogy. So much time and effect was put into the original trilogy compared to the prequel.

    • @daniel_netzel
      @daniel_netzel  6 років тому +50

      Honestly, it's not even his fault what happened. Countless times in the behind the scenes footage for LOTR he mentioned how arduous and stressful the whole thing was, and how he never wanted to do it again. LOTR was in development stages for years before they ever yelled "action". Years of pre-vis, scripting, special effects tests, preparation for Weta to be ready when it was time to shoot. They filmed all three simultaneously because it was the only way to manage, considering they had to use some sets across all three and couldn't afford to tear them down and rebuild every year or something. The Hobbit had prep all done by Guillermo del Toro that ended up getting thrown out when Jackson came on board. Basically, Jackson started working on LOTR in 1995-1996, finished everything in 2003. By comparison, he just didn't have nearly the same time to prepare everything that was needed, not to mention certain pressures from the studio(like that stupid fucking love triangle) pushed the films into at times, shameful territory. They were never meant to be the same sort of epic, certainly not a whole trilogy, but I guess they really wanted dat skrill.

      @joshuampayne 6 років тому +19

      I'd also recommend Lindsay Ellis' recent videos on The Hobbit. She covers the very very troubled production of those films very well. It's almost like a mini documentary

    • @kurttyyduzit
      @kurttyyduzit 6 років тому +8

      The thing that makes me sad the most, is the amount of potential the Hobbit had. I've read the book a few times and I think that if it was done properly, it could've made a great film. But instead, they focused so much on trying to make callbacks to LoTR and other trivial stuff, they lost sight of the story. By the end, I don't think that there were many people that cared about any of the main characters at all.

    • @rjlchristie
      @rjlchristie 5 років тому

      Jackson turned The Hobbit into a monster movie. Interminable and boring shots of monsters roaring and elvish acrobatics.
      I truly wish Del Toro had remained in control, as a director he is generally deeper and more concerned with character development.
      LOTR films were very weak in terms of screenplay and particularly character development. It was, disappointingly, very one dimensional. BBC does historical drama far better in these areas. Jackson would have been better served by choosing others for the screenplay writing, not a newbie and his own wife.
      However, hat's off to Jackson's (Alan lee's) vision of the sets etc and to Jackson's organisational and directing skills. Respect to WETA.
      Nevertheless I've always thought my fellow Kiwi is a splatter-film artist at heart.

    When anyone asks me "What is your favorite movie," or "What movie do you think has the best visual effects," my answer is always the same: The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Personally I can watch any of these movies, starting at any point within them (speaking of the extended editions, of course), and I will be glued to the screen. No matter how many times I read these books or watch the movies I am still in awe by what I am consuming. Thank you for this essay as it further reminds me that we are blessed to live in a time when these great masterpieces exist.

    This is what's needed in movies, Special Effects. 'Effects' being plural. People wrongly harp on CGI only because it's so prevalent, often easy to spot, and easy to outsource. It's marvelous what artists can do with it, but it can be overused. Having multiple tricks like this keeps the viewer guessing and provided realism in light and motion CGI can't meet yet. But in the same way, CGI and blue/green screen allows us to witness things we could never build/see/operate for ourselves.

    • @daniel_netzel
      @daniel_netzel  6 років тому +8

      Exactly. The more tricks you have up your sleeve, the harder it is to pinpoint, and CGI should absolutely 100% be a part of that tool set. Some of the most impressive CG work goes totally unnoticed, it's only when it's not invisible that people complain.

    • @pablorios9468
      @pablorios9468 6 років тому

      While I do love all forms of visual effects, and personally encourage the use of many of the ones used in the video, it's wrong to say that CGI can't achieve this. CGI can achieve almost anything, given enough time, money and preparation. Thing is, we only notice bad CGI. Here's a great video on the subject:

      Totally agree, as someone who never read the books when I saw the films. I had a little trouble grasping the world in the first film. I liked it, but the theatrical cut moved at too brisk of a pace for my liking. I didn't know these characters, therefore I had very little connection in their plight. Seeing the extended cut of FOTR was a revelation, each extended scene revealed more depth and nuance to the characters and is what truly made me fall in love with the films, knowing that Aragorn is actually really old and world weary. Seeing more shades to Borromir. The introduction to Hobbit's and more time spent in that world..it just gives it so much depth. Together, the extended editions also really help make the ending of Return of The King so much stronger. I would say the theatrical cuts are a action/adventure movie going experience whereas the extended cut's are more about character development.

This is awesome work man, honestly Lord of the Rings will always stand king for the perfect combination of CGI and practical effects to create a story so involving of all the characters and actors with one another. Movies nowadays should take notes from LOTR and learn that CGI isn’t everything and it can/will have a impact on the production. Good job man 👍

    • @daniel_netzel
      @daniel_netzel  6 років тому +2

      Thank you so much! I couldn't agree more, it's the perfect blend of the two, used appropriately for every scene. I think people just expect too much from CGI, but forget that it isn't a magic wand that you can just wave and make anything happen. Theoretically sure, but it's likely going to have some element missing that ruins the immersion.

      I don't think so either, they're perfection solidified in celluloid. Oh man, The Hobbit...is a long story. The short version is that it changed hands too many times, the prep time got all screwed up, Peter hesitantly accepted the gig and was completely fucked by a lack of proper preparation, mounting pressure from the studios, and frankly the fact that The Hobbit is like Snow White and the Seven Dwarves and The Lord of the Rings is like Song of Ice and Fire. There's just no comparison. Haha, no problem my dude.

    As always: GREAT video. I can say that I’ve watched hours of the LotR appendices and I love discussing and watching people discuss the effects in the trilogy. It was so amazing to watch the movies come to life in the behind-the-scenes
    People don’t understand how great these effects were and still are. And of course, like you said, the films arent made great because of the effects, they are made even better.
    These films speak volumes in regard that with creative drive and direction, a film can become something more. And *that* is what sticks with us over time.

    • @daniel_netzel
      @daniel_netzel  6 років тому

      Totally agree. Behind the scenes stuff is always fascinating to me, but more for these movies than any other I've ever seen to be honest. Yeah, it's nuts how good it all looks even now. Yup, too bad The Hobbit seemed to lose sight of that.

      @PittsburghSonido 6 років тому

      Film Radar its just not the same with The Hobbit trilogy. I mean, I like the movies but they’re not as impactful as LotR or even as impactful as I thought it’d be.
      I thought I would be blown away with the advancement in CGI and frame rate they filmed with. Its just not the same as splicing practical effects with cgi back in the early 2000s :/

    • @daniel_netzel
      @daniel_netzel  6 років тому

      I feel the same way, honestly, I still haven't even watched the third one because I really didn't like Desolation of Smaug. The CGI looks awful to me, super cartoony and fake(not all of it, but a fair bit) and I just, like most people, feel it was way too stretched out.

    • @PittsburghSonido
      @PittsburghSonido 6 років тому

      Film Radar absolutely! Battle of Five armies was just as cartoony. But its definitely worth watching just for the hell of it and especially if you’ve read the book.
      And yes! It should have been 1 great movie. But no, they have to drain the living hell out of a great story for money. As if Jackson and the entire studio wasn’t rich enough!
      The Hobbit trilogy will be the last “part” divided series in Hollywood. Studios now know that dividing movies into parts is bad for business. Just look at Marvel and even DC. For Infinity War they changed it from part 1 and 2. This was the same with Justice League.
      I’m happy they’ve made that decision. Hopefully they will realize stretching a story absolutely ruins the magic and effect that sticks with us when watching movies. :p

    • @daniel_netzel
      @daniel_netzel  6 років тому +1

      I'm sure I'll see it eventually, Peter definitely knows how to make kick-ass action, and that seems to be the whole thing. I have read the book, and that's part of why I avoided it. It's like a 3 hour movie dedicated to 2 chapters lol
      New Line was actually in some deep financial trouble if I remember correctly, and I believe that's why they had to bring another studio into the mix for help.

    LOTR is by far one of the most immersive trilogies in the history of movies
    Peter Jackson did an amazing job by allowing years and years of effort and preparation to go into the movie before they even started filming. Most movies are so rushed... Film Radar I 100% agree and I have been saying this for a while now. Films from last decade have better CGI than this decade. One of the main problems causing it is the use of digital and not film which The Hobbit shot on opposed to LOTR. Digital often makes CG look way cheaper and is often not blended right with the non-cgi elements due to the way digital looks. Also, I think studios like Marvel are rushing the CGI too to keep up with release dates

      After watching that video essay by Patrick H Williams, I agree with his assessment that the Marvel films have really bad color grading and look really dull (though it has gotten better in recent films).Quite often they struggle to evoke a visual mood. Whereas in LOTR everything has a particular color to it, that in each scene your like "whoah!"..it's not to obtuse degrees (such as The Hobbit trilogy, which Jackson shot himself in the foot with the 47 frames thing), but color is extremely important. Which is why tv shows get away with using lots and lots of blood on screen..solution?..they make the blood darker, because if its darker, it's more unnatural looking and audiences are more prone to not be grossed out because it visually tells them, that it's not real.

      Because nowadays they just overuse cgi rather than using many different visual effects and props, and also as Nolan said, bad colour saturation.

    I allways get emotional from the LOTR movies, the places they filmed and the actors are just flawless to me, it might just be nostalgia though, but it's still one of my all time favourite series.

      I've wondered that as well, but I've watched a ton of stuff that I LOVED growing up that doesn't impact me in the same way. Lord of the Rings has never lost its shine for me, so I think it's gotta be more than just nostalgia, I think they are legitimately perfect films.

    God I love this story and these movies so much man. I'm rereading LOTR as we speak, and it's pretty incredible how close Jackson actually managed to stay to the original story. This video reminded me once again of all the work and passion that has gone into these movies. Thanks!

      I really need to finish the books, a long time ago I started reading Fellowship and LOVED it, then got busy with school and life and never picked it up again :/
      Thanks for watching!

      Haha that's recognizable! It's also such a long read hehe. But honestly, being able to keep track of the big story lines (because you know the movies so well) really helps me getting through the more poetic/"dryer" parts. It's also just fun making comparisons between book and movie, and recognize literal quotes and stuff. And it's just so stunningly written... Hope you'll get to finish all of it some day!
      It's great to see Tolkien's effort reflected in these movies :)

    Mark Hamil is a time traveler. He saw the Marvel movies and went back in time to try to warn us. It's a shame we didn't listen.

      Infinity war was good tho...and I’m not biased since I despise 90% except like TDK and Spider-Man original trilogy....
