  • Gene and Roger received a full primetime hour in May 1996 for this program featuring their conversations with Tom Hanks, Meryl Streep, Steven Spielberg and Brad Pitt (in what was promoted as his first major TV interview). This is my original recording with commercials. Thank for posting. Got a kick out of the original commercials. Olive Garden “Tour of Italy” $9.95. Now $21 for the same food 😂

That was funny and awkward when Tom Hanks brought up Siskel and Ebert's negative reviews of Splash. I really like seeing critics interview actors and filmmakers because I always wonder if there's any resentment or tension between them that will reveal itself. I also respect the stars for sitting down with people who have given them bad reviews at times. As for Brad Pitt, they weren't wrong about saying he might go on to have a big career.

That Ebert review in Chicago Sun Times could have killed his career before it even began. Luckily, Hollywood didn’t listen to Roger about his opinions about him being a poor choice as a leading man.
He was wrong, and too bad he didn’t admit it here. I loved Ebert, but sometimes he simply was way off the mark.

"I hated this movie. Hated hated hated hated hated this movie. Hated it. Hated every simpering stupid vacant audience-insulting moment of it. Hated the sensibility that thought anyone would like it. Hated the implied insult to the audience by its belief that anyone would be entertained by it." ebert reviewing north

16:36 Meryl Streep shares a cringe-worthy story about a professor who sexually harassed her. Yikes.

I didn’t think it was cringeworthy at all. And, hardly sexual harassment.

What's interesting to me about this is Siskel & Ebert's syndicated show we're all familiar with was syndicated through Buena Vista TV, part of Disney just like ABC.
    This was on ... CBS.
I wonder what went on behind the scenes that such a big special ended up on CBS. Was it the guys? Was it ABC? Was it CBS? Did this lead to any other talks about the syndicated show ending up on CBS? I have questions.

Gene was on the local CBS station in Chicago and, much later, started doing weekday hits on the national CBS Morning show (or whatever it was called back in the '90s). He interviewed Bill Clinton at some point when he was working for CBS, so that relationship is very likely why CBS produced this special. Also, Disney didn't buy ABC until 1995 and I don't believe that kind of corporate "synergy" was really in place back at the time either, at least not as it is today.

From Siskel's Volunteers review: "Also crippling the film are two lame performances by its leading actors, the vastly overrated Tom Hanks
(''Splash'') and the consistently disappointing John Candy (''Brewster`s Millions'')."

Pitt seems arrogant, an interview I bet he cringes at.

I doubt it. I thought he came off well here - careful, considered, humble, reflective.
