When I pulled my new house, a plumber told me that I did not want tankless because I had to put a tankless unit unit for each bathroom, kitchen and laundry room and I would have to vent everything. He said it was massive and I’d be better off with just a regular. How true is this?

Not 100%. While an electric unit will use more electricity, upon initial heating, it should be more efficient in the long run. A tank style, electric water heater, will continually re-heat the same water, until it is used and replenished. Where by it'll continue the cycle. In the southern states, where groundwater is warmer, a tankless unit will almost always outperform a tanked unit. You also need to take into account which method of energy you use to heat the water. A natural gas supply, in an area rich with this type of service, will probably outperform LP and electric. Another point to make is what size home you have and how much usage the unit will get. A lot of bathroom sink fixtures and small laundry rooms are better served with a point-of-use electric unit. They're sized to meet the minimum needs of the fixture and deliver at-temp water w/ barely any waste.
@@tomb816it doesn’t sound like you payed attention to the video he said if it’s tankless he wants gas but if it’s with a tank he’d take electric and he’s right ab tankless electrics being more expensive bc they use more power to heat the water instantly

Why do you explain the same thing to them? As an electrician you should know that electric resistive heating is basically 100% energy efficient. Yes, you may need to upgrade the electrical installation in their house but from a pure efficiency standpoint this dude is talking absolute nonsense. The "super heating" part he talks about for tankless electric to create hot water instantaneously also applies to the tankless gas heater he wants to install instead. I really don't get why all the comments say that he knows his stuff... Only thing I could understand is if he talked about economically more efficient because gas costs way less than electricity per kWh in this area but he would need to clarify that...
@@coffeeaddict8972 what do you mean by upgrade the electrical installation in their house? You mean a service upgrade or a whole new system install? Also, what country do you live in?
That's because skill labor isn't cheap. Cheap labor will cost you in the long run. As an electrician, I always tell this to people. But they never listen.
Tankless is no way shape or form easier I can install a conventional water heater in about 30 minutes as long as the old one drains well tankless is an all-day
@@chrisbowers9008he is talking about house under construction installation NOT replacement. Also depends on where the old water heater is. I've seen water heaters tucked under counters where you had to actually remove counter tops and appliances to replace them.
A tankless can and usually does draw more gas than a tanked heater. This means that the 1/2" gas line (in most homes) must be replaced with a 3/4" unless the run is terribly short. This is ADDITIONAL COST for a new build and much higher cost for a retrofit. A gas tankless will typically have additional air intake requirements based on BTU's of the unit. Almost all will require a dedicated intake air vent that many tanked heaters don't have or need. This is again, ADDITIONAL COST for a new build and much higher cost for a retrofit. Also, the exhaust venting of a typical non-condensing tankless requires that it has a dedicated exhaust that is not shared with any other appliance, not be vented into a standard masonary chimney, and many areas require that the exhaust gasses are vented using a double or triple wall stainless vent... Again, this is ADDITIONAL COST for a new build and much higher cost for a retrofit. MUCH MORE COST. Stainless venting alone can cost $50-$100 per FOOT just for the materials without labor! 20 feet times $100 is $2000 more cost than a tank just for the exhaust. (Buy a more expensive condensing model to avoid spending money on stainless venting. Condensing models have secondary and sometimes tertiary heat exchangers that put more heat into the water and less heat up the exhaust. With less exhaust heat, you can avoid the expensive stainless and use PVC which is much cheaper. Condensing models are more efficient with some models at 98% efficiency). Tankless heaters cost more for new installs and MUCH more on retrofits than a tanked heater and the difference is NOT the profit going into a plumber's pocket. In reality, profit margins on tankless installs are less than the margin for a standard tank replacement. Not everyone is a crook. Some things just cost more; especially technology. Tankless heaters are a worthwhile investment as long as they are properly maintained. Id' go so far as offering secondary bypass plumbing loop to make de-scaling as easy as possible and also limit scale from moving through the system and clogging up faucet screens.

**shit
@@tomb816it doesn’t sound like you payed attention to the video he said if it’s tankless he wants gas but if it’s with a tank he’d take electric and he’s right ab tankless electrics being more expensive bc they use more power to heat the water instantly

As an electrician, I agree. I talk people out of getting them. I will take their money if they insist, but I explain this same thing to them first.
Sure you do buddy

That's because skill labor isn't cheap. Cheap labor will cost you in the long run. As an electrician, I always tell this to people. But they never listen.
Plumber was like” Don’t let them know tankless is easier, I charge more for a tankless”
