4:22 It’s been 7 years and to this day, I still hear Niko’s voice saying “always maximize the compatibility” in my head every time I save in Photoshop.

I just did one as a test. Having the trees as a horizon makes the effect way more difficult. Also as I tried to move some fine branches into the shot with the colo(u)r difference key, i found out that things that are over exposed get included into the key. For others with camera's with a low dynamic range, try to find a shot without overexposed parts, it'll make your life better.

I am a massive fan or CC in general, really enjoy the reaction vids, BUT I have to say this is the most concise and informative, not to mention inspiring video Ive seen on the subject. Im pretty experienced with PS and AF but this has made me excited to go and try something new like Im back in college. Thanks, going to start with a distant mountain, and work up to Forest moon Endor ewok village.

I would love you guys to perhaps do it the old way too. Glass frame and everything, So people get a deeper understanding how the filmmaker's tools have evolved. And how old the matte painting technique really is. Perhaps even find some of scenes and work out exactly where the matte line is. Perhaps even do a demonstration of a travelling matte. I love what you are doing! Keep doing it!

  • @NorseNoah

You can also use Mocha or the normal after effects trackers. It's just that mocha will take longer and after effects tracking requires points and isn't as fool-proof.

They aren't mutually exclusive terms. Matte painting comes from the paintings on glass which were applied to photographic plates to extend, enhance or alter the environment. The photographic elements were shot through the glass, or the film had sections matted off in black to prevent their exposure.

For the importing and aligning of the psd I use a script witch set up all the layers in 3d with the same position of the original 2d image, and when u move one layer in z space it actually scales the image to keep the aligment to the camera. You should check it out, works great. And I also made some changes soo you get more controll of each layers too. I'll see if I can come back and post a link to it
