- It's Adam Koralik here and today we're traveling to Guam, a US territory. This continues our three week adventure, and the seventh of TWELVE episodes. This episode will have a focus on local food in Guam, the history of Guam/CNMI, and big American burgers.

I had the pleasure of living on Guam for 7 1/2 years. 5 1/2 when I was in the US Navy then another 2 as a civilian contractor and would go back in a heartbeat. Two of my children were born there. Guam spoiled me so much that when I left and got stationed in Hawaii my dislike for Hawaii got a healthy push by how it didn't even come close to Guam.
Visitors, feel free to go to the villages when they have their fiestas. Everyone is always welcome.🤗

That sugar smack looking coffee does indeed taste like sugar smacks, there's another can coffee simply called Thai Coffee found in some Mom and Pop stores that taste similar. Both are good and I love em.
Chamorro cookies are definitely an acquired taste, they are quite dry and not very sweet.

Just a quick FYI. The pronunciation of Tamuning is Ta-Moo-ning.
I think they call that donut burger 'the luther' (after luther vandross) I know KFC did a chicken version some years ago but I've never had the real thing... would certainly be curious to try it!

Politically, I think both places will stay as they are now.
Today we join our favourite Beach Bound Nerd as he he floats in water while giving a history lesson as to Guam/the CNMI's land ownership. Later he gives a look at Doughnut Burger (mmmmmmm Donuts), and various oother things to do in the Shopping/Tourist district of the Island, while explaining that this place is a good gateway to try Japanese goods without actually going to the country.

Appreciate your videos bros especially Saipans. Your info is incorrect about local chamorros. Our ancient ancestors came from southeast Indonesia not the phillipines
CNMI could have become independent when they were a trust territory. They wanted to join with Guam but Guam wasn't up for that so they decided to become a Commonwealth territory. Guam still doesn't even have a constitution. CNMI was able to carve out way more exemptions than Guam gets.
The other trust territories went independent with the compacts of free association with the US. We basically still provide them postal service, various federal services, defense, and send them boat loads of cash. But, they are still independent countries and they can end this arrangement at any time.

I love the historical part of this video and hasn't Puerto Rico been offered the same package as Cuba but they turned it down then I know in 2012 they were offred statehood and it was also turned down I think it was 35% voted for statehood and I would imagine the USVI if they voted for statehood would have to become part of Puerto Rico.
They tend to just sit there shaking a finger about colonialism but also refuse to make a decision unfortunately.
I really enjoyed your discussion about the locals of GU and MP discussing their future routes with you. It's good to learn how local people benefit from and work with other administrations, and how status quo, despite its stigma, is more convenient (as in less disruptive) to more parties.
And interestingly, when you were talking about independent island states, you didn't bring up the freely associated states of the Compact of Free Association (Marshall Islands, Federated Micronesia, Palau) in the Pacific. After being held as UN Trust Territories, the US and the freely associated states negotiated a deal where the US can keep a military presence on these states after independence in exchange for some economic advantages. The problem is (as I hear) these economic advantages are insufficient for these island nations.
I've been to the FSM, they're totally dependent on the US for everything.

The best place to eat in Guam is Caliente. Get the pork Chimichanga Burrito or pork chile relleno. They are kind of stingy with the chips but you will get over it.

Very near Bank of Hawaii in Hagåtña. Near Mosas, Staxs and California Pizza Kitchen, in that area. It is my favorite place to eat in Guam.

Even the Phlippines didn't really succeed with independence. It led to widespread corruption, poverty, and eventually even a dictatorship. Many Filipino Nationalists in the Commonwealth era wanted independence because they knew the US Constitution limited their potential power to plunder citizens and be tyrants. Of course FDR obliged because they saw Filipinos as an "alien race". A "commonwealth" protectorate-style system like Philippines from 1934 to 1946 I think would be the best compromise. This would result in a mostly independent government better suited to local conditions, but remains under the protection of the US Constitution and military.

@@AdamEatsTheWorld Certainly, as a Commonwealth (basically a protectorate). It would be independent, apart from foreign policy and free trade within the US. The Philippines as a commonwealth already had its own President, currency, and even military. The only caveat was that it had the US Constitution which would prevent, or at least limit the widespread corruption and dictatorship we have seen.
We likely would have never seen the massive dependence the US has on China, with basically an entire country ripe for development without the barriers of international trade like tariffs and regulations. It would've been a massive win-win. The Philippines would likely probably have seen a standard of living exceeding that of Japan, Singapore, or South Korea.
The island by itself is nice but the people there not so much not only they are extremely jealous they have sticky fingers too lastly they are two faces sorry for my honest opinion

Get real dude the US will never support Guam or any other Mariana Islands push for independence or sovereignty. Guam is the most important asset it has in its real estate portfolio. Even more important than Hawaii.

Everybody knows about Guam and Saipan, there's nothing there! Your selling kmart and beaches and at the same time saying it's catering for Japanese, so why would anybody fly to Guam? I can get a cheaper flight to Singapore or Bali .. I live in Florida we have plenty of beaches and we have many Caribbean islands for one hour flight.. Guam is for military and crabs. It's so boring there your showing only food and stores . I rather fly to the Philippines for less.
