Our favorite small pigeon is a lyrical genius and this is just another perfect example of how much of a lyrical genius Miku is Po!!! ❤
She sure is.🤗
Love it! My favourite part of the song is Saiki and Miku wailing away with their beautiful harmonies toward the end. Oh yes, and of course, Kanami's solo.
The first time I thought, “Hmm?”. The more I listen to it, the more I like it, because each time I notice something.
Kanami's solo is my favorite part. She is awesome as always!!!
I do love this song. It is different from what we normally hear from Band-Maid, but they are always willing to take some chances with their music and that is one of the reasons I love their music. All of the Maids provide their musical excellence to this song, but Miku's lyrics are so beautifully heartfelt. We all know Kanami is a musical genius, but Miku needs to be considered a lyrical genius. How many professional lyricists would kill to come up with the words, "The best things are in your heart."
The more I listen to this song, the more I love it ❤
My favorite part is specifically the triplets on the drums going into the last chorus. I spend most of the song anticipating it.
Totally love this song, Alan. For so many reasons, but mostly, Miku's lyrics and Saiki's vocals. and Miku's backing vocals. For me, a non-musical knuckle dragger, the instruments are just quietly excellent - it's Misa, Mincho and Akane, of course it's excellent - but the lyrics and vocals really win me over here. Solid gold winner.
Not near top 10 for me but, as we all know, there’s so many great Band Maid songs that you’re still hitting great songs down at 50-60! This is a grower, in my mind. It will probably shine live, like every song of theirs.
Thanks!
No problem! Appreciate the support!
Yeah, It's great. I feel like it starts as an Incubus song and becomes a BM song 🙂
I really enjoy this song. Its probably a top 20 for me. Couldnt agree more about the mix. Gets me really excited about what they have in store for us this summer. Not to mention all the tweets they've been posting about how the writing has been going lately.
Bestie brings to mind another fantastic song of theirs, Gion-Cho, featuring polished drums, organic guitars, and linguistic intricacy.
I would love to check your video tutorial on the H9 Alan. hope you will do it.
C'mon Alan. I miss the GG besties! Glad your feeling better. I agree w you. This is also so radio friendly.
One thing I respect about you, Alan, is though you may be biased toward progressive hard rock and crazy artists like MtH and into really heavy, growly metal...you appreciate a well-crafted song in any genre.
I think a lot of us could learn something from that.
Thanks for the review and good luck on the rest of your tour.
It took a few days for this song to creep into my top ten, and it's still moving up. Great video. Thanks!
I love this song for many reason and more are revealed the more I listen to it. Funny this kinda reminds me of RUSH when they released a new album/song it would take me a while to process it - I think because of the depth of the music. This new song by Band-Maid, Bestie, has that same feeling - to me. I am drawn to Kanami’s solo, I can’t explain it, but the form of the composition pulls me. (Weird, I know)
I'm so glad you separated these tracks. It really shows what went into producing "Bestie" As is usual there's a lot going on that gets buried in the mix and I can't wait to play this over a proper audio system.
The first time I listened I thought, "Wow! This is a really different sound for Band-Maid!" Akane is using more of a heavy tom sound than the pedals and Misa thumping along with Akane. Kanami is again experimenting with tone. Of course, my first listen through was with a reactor a few hours before the NA release and my second pass was the Ohrenje lyric video, so I did not hear very good separation. The official release was better and I could hear more nuance. The more you listen to "Bestie", the more you hear those signature 'Band-Maid doing Band-Maid things"- Akanes fills, Misa's usual clever tricks, and Kanami being Mincho. I can hear Miku's voice backing up Saiki and I can just hear her guitar, but her tone seems muddy, almost drone like (intentional?).
I really like "Bestie", the all English lyrics were a surprise, but they're still pure Kobato, Saiki's pronunciation was her usual but her singing was perfection as usual too. The Einziger colab was an opportunity for all of them to experiment and it looks like they really enjoyed this experience.
Best analysis of the song to date!. Excellent job sir.
I love this song and my favorite part would probably be the bridge for the same reasons you seem to like it, i.e., the vocal accompaniment. And as a bass player, I always enjoy MISA’s bass lines as well as her bass tone. Honestly, I like this song more every time I listen to it. And yes, I would really enjoy hearing about the harmonizer Kanami uses.
Thanks Allen. Love being able to hear the separate tracks. I think it's a good song. Not on my regular band-maid jam playlist but right there with About us and Memorable on my chill one. It's gonna be great live!
Wow! Great technical review bro. The song is a great collab and a great B-M song - and yes, akane's drums sounds mwahh!! lol, the whole song is a sonic treasure and.. its a love letter from the band members to the band members - what's not to love about that? Very awesome, period.🤘❤❤❤❤❤
I love MISA's playing. Her bass tone is setting a new standard... and Akane's drumming is so distinguishable... and Kanami's solo... ahhhh! The recording and mix is good, too! Miku's lyrics are heartfelt. "I can't look into your eyes." Is Saiki her bestie? But Saiki masterfully delivers her lyrics, as always. BTW - The volume of lyrics and nuanced melodies she's committed to memory over the years is simply mind-blowing!
Mikey did good at giving them his direction for the song, and probably helped with the English lyrics -- a good growth for Miku's craft. I don't understand why Kanami said she couldn't have come up with the main riff. Probably just her being super polite, as usual.
I like the groove and feel of the song. I was waiting for, "I don't give a f**k" at the end. But maybe with these particular "Bestie" lyrics, that wouldn't be such a good idea. Even though at first listen it felt on par with Start Over, it will undoubtedly do what every Band-Maid song does -- grow on you! Got to break through to the mainstream market with a few cuts, right? Hopefully Bestie helps with that! Thanks, Band-Maid! And thx, Alan!
triplet fill after solo is my favorite part
That was fantastic analysis Alan! I enjoy the song. Definitely different and is a great addition to their discography. I would be interested in a H9 pedal video
Love Saiki's long note that flows into Kanami's solo. This song has great emotional hooks and I love how the instruments sound. Bandmaid can be proggy fast fun but this mid tempo side is imho where they can get their hooks into you and make you feel. I love both aspects.
Thanks for mentioning and highlighting the drums so much. First time I heard it I said Akane drives the song. Not over doing it which would drown the song. But perfect. Akane and MISA add so much before you listen to the wonderful vocal harmony layering. I think the discussion has been split between loving and not liking it. To me it is not only a grower but a clever but simple little love letter to friends. Plus we have had people liking it and then changing their minds after reading the criticism. For me, a stupidly biased fan, I like enough to keep playing it and liking it more. Great to watch all the deep dive into the sound as well. Thanks.
I love this song too. It's not a cookie cutter track. It's different from the songs on Unseen World. It shows the skill and creativity we have come to expect from this terrific band.
❤ this song
Excellent breakdown!!! Talk about Unseen World! A whole world of musical threads dnsely woven into a exquisite tapestry. You have done us all a hugh service!
Thanks Allen. That was fantastic analysis.
I like your great dissection and I agree that all you said.
I love Mincyo's solo, Kobato's chorus work, Kanami's drum riff and also Sai-cyan's overwelming vocal of this song.
Because this song is written in all English, lyrics became more straight than as usual IMO.
Sorry for poor English as I'm Japanese.
Take care yourself.😀
It's so heartwarming hearing this after about 5 years of hearing these ladies. It feels like a culmination of what they're all so good at doing. This song feels like a bookend to an album and it gets me in the feels every time. I love Band-Maid so much and this song feels like Miku's love letter to her band mates who are now her besties. It's so beautiful. I adore it the more times I hear it! 💜🤘
It's a great song, it'll sound even better when played live.
I loved this song and so excited where Bandmaid will go from here.
I would like to hear an Incubus version of this song, out of curiosity. Thanks Alan! Happy to see you're feeling better.
Musically it reminded me of KingsX from the late 90"s early 00's the vocals are without a doubt some of their best. This is what I've been hoping they would one day do. Wish answered.
I hope your show in Denver goes well. I grew up there and get back there pretty often to see family.
Favorite part of this song? Well, even though it is hard to understand Saiki completely - she stands out - love it.
I think even when it's a Uk or US artist, you don't really GET the lyrics until you read them, and especially when they unroll with the music (as in Ohrenge's YT post). That you don't get the lyrics until investigating a bit just adds more for me.
ETA: The vibe reminds me of this Beaadoobee song, but as always with B-M, everything - the arrangement, the chord progression, all the instrumental parts, are just BETTER.
It's a great song and great mix, my only tweak would have been to bring up the lead vocal by 2-3 db.
Maybe just in the 2k on a EQ but not overall volume
Great reaction, however I really wish you would have isolated Kanami's track. She does not get enough credit and always gets overshadowed by Misa and Akane. Giver her some love! Rock on 🤘
you know what I did forget to do that, I did when I first heard the song and I forgot to show of the layers on that part.
MISA MISA MISA!!!!! not in my top 10 but definitely in the top half of Band-Maid songs
I like this song. It's a great collaboration with Mike artistically. The only downside is that I find it less complex than a 100% Band-Maid song, IMO. But if this "simplicity" can make BM's music more accessible to American audiences, or other countries, and help it grow further, it's a perfect song. Great mix. Thank you Alan for your good analysis.
Love it. A mix of old style composition with current sound.
There is no way Mikey chan was not in the studio with them I think. Especially given how super enthusiastic kanami was when they mentioned him afterwards - even saiki cracked a grin. I'm sure he adores Achi's drums and put them centre stage. The whole piece hangs off her
Yes I'd be interested in a video on the H9 harmonizer pedal
First few bars remind of an old Austin band called The Reivers (formerly Zeitgeist). I loved their shows.
👍👍I really like it. 🖖❤
👍👍
I gave up on the idea of ranking Band-Maid songs because each time I listen to a song I haven't heard in a while, I find a new favorite. So my current kind of ranking is "is this a song I'd like to hear live during a 25 songs concert?" - and it's a big YES for Bestie, I'm sure this song will sound huge on stage.
Спасибо, Алан! ❤❤❤❤
All right I'm calling you out. Top 10? Let's do an MNN interview and see where this actually lands. Get back from tour and let's do it! I think it's top third of the catalog but top 10 is crazy competitive real estate. ❤🎉
There is a Japanese reactor (I can't recall his name right now) who translated the English lyrics into Japanese! And it is not t-shinji! A MUST SEE if you can find it.
Thanks for the isolated vocal/harmonies breakdown...beautiful ❤ Too many great things in this song. The first note reminds me of Reef 'Place Your Hands' 😁 Yeah...do the pedal video. I'm not a 'tarist but wanna see you play a Mincho solo 👍
I like this song more than Magie…The reactions I have seen are mixed. The sound mix is great. It’s one of their better mixes not as compressed. It’s not a typical riff for Kanami…probably from Mikey as the girls say…she always has away to make the lead fit the song. Akane and MISA! MISA! MISA! As always give the song its soul. It’s right in Saiki’s vocal range with Miku doing Miku things to make the song special. A song to her band members.
🤘🕊️🦍🥷👸🏻👀PO!
First! I’m not a specialist. I’d put Bestie in the 30-40 place. And it’s a very company with say Freezer, Alone etc.
I like guitar tone throughout. Well it doesn't have the complexity of a lot of Band-Maid arrangements, it's got a Cool vibe.
Love it, to my ears its the Akane and MISA show. Miku's embellishments are the cherry on the top.
Great analysis of this song, sick of the comments on other videos and FB saying its a terrible mix, can't hear Miku vocals, boring drumming and bass etc...this breakdown shows otherwise thankyou
H9 video please.
This song is going to blow minds live.
I especially like the part where they sing and play
İm a bass player so i am biased towards Misa, she is all over this song,,Kanami lead solo is İMO is as good as Daydreaming, its the feels she puts in every solo.
It's a good song, but only mid-pack in Band Maid's catalog for me (which means it better then a lot of bands Good songs). It will not be skipped, but I can't see myself putting it on repeat (like I do with daydreaming, From Now On, Manners, Endless Story, Puzzle, Onset, etc)
B My favorite parts are konami's bands in the second verse. That's an old school 90s.Smashing Pumpkins incubus stuff.I bet misa really likes the song
It's not my favourite Band-Maid song, but I really do like it. I like the fact that they try new s&%t. The song itself (IMO) is a success and it's automatically on the playlist...... And I think it is brilliant that they have gotten to a level that fellow musicians want to work with them. Even if they did a "Lulu", Metallica/Lou Reed co-lab, I'd still support it.
The vocals from Saiki and Miku especially when Saiki drops closer to her speaking register. So rich down there. Her accent with English is also really interesting to me and pleasant. The mix is probably Band-Maid’s best. I’m hoping the new CD will sound like this. The bass and drum mix really fills the lower bandwidths nicely throughout. This will be trickier to achieve with Band-Maid’s busier compositions but i think it would still sound better. Just a really nice flow through this whole song from everyone
I love this song, but it's not in my top 10 (only because that is a really high bar)
🤦♀
I like the intro and outro guitars, it's a different guitar sound than they usually play. All the girls performed well, but they have so many great tracks, that it ends up as a mid-tier song for me.
I have been shitting on this song like if it was The Dragon Cries part 2. But what I failed to grasp is that this is a collab between 2 or more were different idea's are put is. Still don't like it but will respect it more. What we all wanted is a real collab were both artists play /sing together in the stage/MV.. not just Band-Maid.
Dragon cries was a great song
@@Dicodec I don't like it that much
i would have turned up Misa a bit
🤔
Po!
lolwut?
Well, music is subjective, and the song is fine, but I found it to be about as much a basic Bitch Incubus song as possible, not even one of Incubus' bangers. Akane sounded asleep at the drums, and while Miku's lyrics were her usually clever self, I struggle to pick her out in 90% of the song. About the only thing that said "Band Maid" about it to me was Misa's bass being 10x busier than any western rock band would be on a similar song. Very Mid. 6.5/10 Even the mix was a bit sus IMO, though not near as bad as the mix for the Dragon Cries which was so compressed it almost seemed like sabotage. I just found very little that jumped out thru it. Just Misa and a good but not top notch Saiki performance.
On the bright side, if more people agree with you, this might actually be the mainstream breakthrough track that the Dragon Cries was supposed to be. Downside for my greedy self, is I don.t wanna see Band Maid go thru a Black/Load/Reload phase, because I am a greedy bastard.
But this song is nowhere near as good as Daydreaming, Before Yesterday, About Us, Start Over, Memorable, etc. At least in all of those the Maids were still going full Maid.
Solo mi dos pesos.
🤷♂
This is an Incubus song.......with Band-Maid influence.....meh
Sorry guys, I've tried but this is IMO one of their weakest songs.
Still great but def mid-tier Band Maid IMO
No it´s certainly not, at least not for me. I´d put in my top 60, maybe top 70 (if I´m generous).
To be honest, it has nothing special for me, nothing that really stands out.
But it´s not bad either.
