I have just started learning Auslan, but I was not able to pick up on his sign name.
Can some one let me know what it is or do I have to wait till I find it on my own.

As Keira says, his sign name is a visual adaptation of the hat he made for Melbourne Cup day. My friend has long, curly hair and her sign name is a sign made by repeatedly opening and closing the index finger and thumb in an arc from her forehead to her shoulder. The movement represents her long, curly hair.

Darby Isnotfunny generally you have to have a non-hearing person give it to you

I am an Auslan student and several of our Deaf teachers have communicated not everyone has a Sign Name, it may also take many years being involved with the Deaf community to get one, and it is not culturally appropriate and even rude to ask for one. Two of our teachers born deaf said they did not have sign names until their 30's, so it really depends. It is not the same thing, but I think of it like nicknames. It comes from others and a group recognise it and use it. You can't give yourself one, and often relates to their experience of you, perhaps your appearance or behaviour, something that stands out about you, that people know you for, or perhaps your initials etc

Unlike your 'real' name which your Parents will think about for months before your birth, a sign-name is more based on your character or uniqueness and can only be given by a member of the Deaf community. It's rude to ask for one or think you will ever get one. Its really a gift.

A deaf or hard of hearing person needs to give you a sign name. You can't give yourself or have a hearing person give it to you, as that is considered offensive/cultural appropriation.
