I'm so glad I've found you. I was raised orthodox. I've been in the occult for about 20 years but have been disillusioned by the orthodox church. I've really needed to hear this for all of this to make sense. I was on the path to HGA but am honestly using Golden Dawn rituals as an energetic daily hygiene.

The Platonist Olympiodorus says that in his time, the guardian spirit was called our angel (no doubt either because of Christianity or because of Assyrian-Chaldean mystery theology). But in the time of Plato, it was called daimon. The difference is nominal, had Plato been familiar with the Semitic angelology, he would have used the word angel in place of daimon.

I'm very much interested in the conception of the "guardian spirit" as "perfect nature" per Picatrix. The idea that the spirit is a higher self, who finds himself as a mediator between the human embodied soul and the proper god (oikeios theos), who not only guides the soul in life but in death, and leads the soul to and from the god between the incarnations.

The old Norse tradition had a bunch of concepts relating to this that survived into folk beliefs: Fylgja, Vörðr, Hamingja
I wonder what other cultures had them as well. I only know of the Greek and Roman ones, the Finnish Luonto and there is the more famous Totem/Doodem from Ojibwe.
In Hungary, the pagans had the "őrző" or plural "őrzők", which for the nation was most notably the Turul (a kind of bird that is still the national animal), but this was replaced by the Virgin Mary as a patron of the country. There are archeological records, that show everyday folk wore animal bones (teeth, legs, etc.) either as talismans or in pouches as good luck charm to have their őrző close. There is also evidence of several diverse communities having their own deities and patron spirits, like some sites had this "Blessed Lady/Mother" which even today has Mary shrines, others had spirits associated with local geography like a lake, river, mountain, etc.
There were communities that worshipped "Hadúr" whose name is literally "War/Warcraft/Military Lord" and he was a wargod, but also a god of craftmanship (i.e invention, engineering) and there were also communities that venerated the winds deified as an elderly woman "Szélanyó" among others. It is still unclear if they were part of a larger polytheistic religion or purely local guardians/patrons for communities, though polytheism is dominating right now (but I think it's mistake to think Hungarians ever were a homogeneous ethnicity).

perfect video, though i have to say the greek/roman Daimon/daemon is more complex than just a HGA. Homer interchangeably used the term to also refer to Olympians at times, and seemed to simply mean “divine” and refer to any sort of divine spirit. it’s likely Christians made the term exclusively mean evil spirit specifically to try and stomp out their Pagan roots the way Islam tried something similar with Jinn (though as you’ve said, jinn are pretty complex and can even be Christian/Muslim/Jewish/Pagnan which isn’t mentioned for demons/daemons.

Thanks for the information, however I have one comment. You said that Protestants don't believe in spirits (some may not) but we don't grovel to them the way Catholics do. Just one other point, I don't understand how someone living an unholy life expects to have a Holy Guardian Angel. Maybe that's the reason they are so hard for most people to contact them. Lest anyone scoff at my comments, I have practiced Solomonic majick for decades. Blessings.
