What Russians [ACTUALLY] think about the Ukraine war.

  • The Russia vs. Ukraine war has been going on for nearly 2 years now. This year, new Russian opinion polls asked what Russians think about the war in Ukraine. And while it showed that more Russians want an end to the war, the answer is not that simple.
In this video, we take a look other factors that influence whether Russians support the Ukraine war. We talk about Russia’s social problems, violence in Russia, Russia war protests, all of which influence how Russians react to the ongoing war. To do this, we look not just at the available data, but also at independent Russian documentary footage to show the overall mood in Russian society today - and especially about the war in Ukraine.

No, what happens is that you don't know what Americans are really like, but I am their neighbor, I live in Mexico, on the border with the United States, I speak English, I have family there, I have a visa, I have friends there, I watch their news , I have visited for tourism. The United States IS NO LONGER what it was in the 80's and 90's, today it is a sad decadent country TOTALLY WITHOUT MORALITY, and I say this even knowing that my family lives in it, THE UNITED STATES is a decrepit country WITHOUT MORALITY, it only has money and weapons , but he has no values, family, morals, religion, and he no longer even has patriotism because his army currently has a DEFICIT in hiring soldiers.

Imagine losing family members in a pointless war which, even if won, won't actually improve your situation, and yet still not making you angry enough to revolt.

They are patriotic or is that only a concept for Americans? Crimea it self could provide millions of dollars for the Russian economy and in turn improve the lives of millions of Russians. That doesn't justify the war but saying it has no meaning is just as stupid. Invading neighboring countries to enrich your own was the norm for thousands of years. Think about what your country took from others in the past and how you are enjoying it's benefits today.

America fought what was ultimately a pointless war in Afghanistan, and a war in Iraq that left America in a worse position than before it started from a geopolitical point of view. It certainly didn't trigger a revolt here. Successful revolts are rare, and are usually in connection with an improving society not one in decline like Russia.

If you just swallow every insult and do nothing, then nothing will ever change! Exactly what is wrong with Russia in one paragraph: "The building they live in is literally falling apart. There is no plumbing or heating, but the residents are scared to ask the administrator to improve their living conditions. They're also scared of appealing to local authorities convinced that would only make their situation worse. The Russians can adapt themselves to anything and are unwilling to fight for their rights." In Ukraine, the people are passive. Just imagine that burying sons before victory is encouraged, but speaking out against it is prohibited. Now the state is hunting men. And they are angry that they lost the land that Khrushchev gave to them together with the Russian people, without asking the people’s opinion, they were tolerated until Ukraine was different from Russia, but in 2014 he said his opinion, because Ukrainian officials are going to de-port them or punish. They set an excellent example: see the azov children’s camp, the ban on the Russian language in 2017, avenue named of Bad dera and Schuchevich in Kiew. Western Ukrainians, whose grandfathers were on the side of Germany and organized Lviv 1941 or Volyn 1944) are sick with revanchism, and consider the eastern grandfathers who were on the side of the USSR against Germany to be bad, and they demolish monuments to Soviet soldier while the eastern ones remain silent, thereby betraying their ancestors. And this is all in a half democracy, and not when you go to prison for a month for a blank piece of paper, you will be fired from your job, and you and your children will go hungry. And the products cost the same as in Lidl, and the salaries are 300$ -- 200$ per food for 1 person for month.

Throughout history, Russians had a very special relationship with people who wield power. Tzars and emperors were referred to as “The Lord’s Anointed”, the one who reigns by the divine right, and their power was believed to be sacred. That's why these days the Russian “government” is thought to be a separate, almost miraculous entity, something entirely different from the people. As a result of this unhealthy relationship with the government, the regular Russian person is born with a rare genetic malfunction: an inborn submission to any authority.

So far and beyond that's it's really hard to fathom, hard to comprehend.
The 'defeatism' and the cognitive dissonance that is required of anyone to be able to go on and live, or perhaps rather survive is really....well frankly - astonishing, frightening and paralyzing. Just a short snippet:
'"We're all afraid. Everyone. All the time!"

Russia's land grab is all about possessing and controlling Ukraine's fossil fuel resources. Once Ukraine will be able to access and fully develop its own natural resources that would start to threaten Russia economically. So Russia has very strong economic reasons to invade Crimea and take the Donbas region - to control the natural gas and shale oil in those regions.
The Russian government’s own forecasts expected its oil and gas production to be undermined both by depleting reserves and the effects of technological and economic sanctions imposed by the west after the 2014 Crimea invasion. Even its most optimistic scenario predicted a short-term modest increase in oil production and then plateauing from 2024 to 2035. In the more conservative scenario, oil production was expected to decline.

they won’t because putin actually represents interests of the majority of the population. Many from the minority who openly oppose the war don’t see a point of revisiting the history of russian imperialism, which is the source of the problem. Having been deprived from human rights and decent standard of living for centuries their population developed conformism as a method to survive. They rationalize actions of their ruler who compensate their miserable lives by letting them associate themselves with a source of power they’re deprived from in their lives. “Yes, we’re poor, but with our tsar/stalin/putin/.. we’re strong and the west is scared of us”. This is an immense source of satisfaction for those people. They learn to direct their internal frustration, anger and blame to the outside world, not to their rulers, who they love/fear/respect. That’s why the infamous Bucha massacre happened, why we see brutality of russian soldiers towards Ukrainian civilians and POWs, etc. It’s a deeply sick, miserable, isolated, hopeless population.

Russians outside of Moscow and St. Petersburg and the other large cities seem to be continuing to live in a medieval world where the ruler has all power and the peasants are even afraid to get rid of the ruler who is bad. It does not seem to be any rule of law, even as their was in Soviet times. From what I have read, as long as one stuck to Soviet law as it was written petty issues could be solved legally with the larger issues always we’re on the side of the state. Putin has devolved everything to the most basic primitive almost a slave-like level. the peoples spirit is totally broken until they actually equate their country with their dictatorial leader and have no faith in each other much less the government. Russians in general seem to be generous to each other as long as it does not involve sacrifice or potential sacrifice against higher authority. As indirectly pointed out in this documentary the people who are the poorest are those outside the center and they are also the ones who are losing their lives in the Ukraine war. The soldiers have very bad PTSD and just like a lot of the Vietnam veterans and veterans of the Middle East They don’t feel alive unless they’re actually in the fight with their comrades by their side. When they return from the war they see nothing for them in civilian life because it’s just a mass of hopelessness and depression.

Russia was not under attack. putin made bad decisions and miscalculations.
putin is an international war criminal for his behaviors.
It is amusing that you comment about the US in your response. If only it was just one country. Most of the Western world is against your beloved putin. Surely that tells you something.
Do you have a toilet in your house or do you still have an outhouse?
      putin is destroying Russia.
Do you not see the masses of educated people who left Russia for a better life, while putin was talking about spitting them out like flies. Do you not realize that these were educated and skilled people... this was a major brain drain on Russia. I'm not even talking about the nearly 400,000 young Russian men that have died while trying to invade Ukraine.
Do you know anything about American soldiers coming back from wars like Vietnam? Or serving active duty on Iraq, etc...? Do you not see movies of war veterans suffering PTSD. Not being able to adjust to life after the war (or their tour)... these guys hit the bottle (in your case vodka) and sometimes even go nuts and end their lives in a killing spree. This is what is going to happen with Russian soldiers returning from the front... a war that wasn't necessary. Russia is dying.. and it's going to get worse...
If you thought eggs were expensive a little while back... just wait another 6 months. If you thought food had become expensive in Russia... wait a year. Oil revenues are going down... all Western tech (well most responsible companies) have pulled out of Russia. You no longer have Western companies to service your Oligarch's luxury German sedans. You no longer have companies that can manufacture or repair aero planes... have you not noticed the high number of them falling out of the sky? The decrease in serviceable planes. Are there any airlines that still operate internationally from Russia? The planes are probably not air-worthy and are no longer allowed to land at foreign airports...
Please... do yourself a favour... stop dreaming... wake up and smell the coffee. Take a long hard look at what the situation really is. putin led your country into a war that didn't exist... he badly overestimated his power... and underestimated corruption... the country once held in regard as the second strongest/best army in the world is now the ass-end of jokes. Thousands of your beloved VDV's (Special Forces/Parachute Battalion soldiers) died for nothing.
I almost feel sorry for those Russians that just can't see past the sad lives they're leading due to their unwavering support for their dictator. Be like the woman that left "The Pentagon" and stop relying on the welfare of the state.. and improve your life.

We will see to having this fixed, probably after the war - as soon as we get a decent chance to survive violent war-seasoned decently armed criminals, some of which are getting ready for political power as we speak. Could have a reasonable cooperation sooner, but some actually wealthy and powerful people do not want that, for some obscure reasons...

I see a lot of desperate people trying to cope in various desperate ways. I don't think this is a problem of "learned helplessness" as it used to be, but of actual. People have so little already of course they are afraid to do anything that threatens losing that very little bit. Especially after losing a loved one.

    • @PsycloneSarah
      @PsycloneSarah 7 місяців тому +10

I agree, it clearly goes beyond learned helplessness. Not only do they believe their circumstances are inescapable but they live in fear of losing what they have and fear of being punished for trying, which is operant conditioning.
In abusive relationships this can only be overcome when the victim believes in a solution, the pain of staying outweighs the pain of leaving and they either believe they will lose what they have either way, have nothing left to lose or the fear of losing what little they have outweighs the fear of punishment.
It makes sense that this is why historically mothers tend to be the ones who protest. They either lost their child or believe they will lose their child either way and I can’t imagine anything worse.
It’s a terrible situation... I don’t know enough about Russians or politics, but I know enough about people to believe there will eventually be a tipping point, it will unfortunately take a lot of pain and moral courage

I so wish I could tell this grieving couple how sad we feel for their loss. I wish I could tell them NATO is a defense only treaty. NATO has no army. NATO has no air force or navy. It has members who agree not to attack one another. These members simply agree to decide if they will help and if so what that help will be. Maybe it is food. Maybe it is electronic equipment. Maybe it is blankets or bandages or socks or permission to use a country's air space or an airport for landing. Ukraine did nothing wrong. Putin started this war because he wanted Crimea and the oil and natural gas in Eastern Ukraine. When that wasn't enough he massed hundreds of thousands of soldiers in Belarus, right at the border and close to Ky insisting he was not going to invade Then he had to have the oil in Eastern Ukraine

The families' thinking in relation to the war is complex indeed. But the solution to the war is that the aggressor bring the Russian troops home. Russia can be content with the land they have, the nation they are. They will then have the money to spend helping the disabled survivors, the families of the deceased, and those with post battle trauma.
