Moved into a rent house years ago & the previous tenant had left a few packs of seeds in a kitchen drawer. I threw them outside in a flower garden that had nothing in it but dead roses & weeds. I never tilled, weeded, fertilized or watered... nothing. Those were the best bell peppers & tomatoes I’ve ever grown. 🤣

Im a new gardener and I got sucked into the hgtv side of gardening and was telling my husband today I don’t understand how gardening is so expensive if Americans grew victory gardens during the Great Depression. Doesn’t make any sense but that’s because I learned that it’s the big box stores and the fancy you tubers that tell us that gardening is expensive when it doesn’t have to be. You’re one of the only gardeners on UA-cam that I found that’s speaking this kind of wisdom

Every single day I do something to further self sufficiency. This is crazy, but I had 2 old onions on my back porch from last season and they were just a sprouting these green onion leaves out the top. So, I went and stuck them in my raised bed. Sounds crazy, I know, but I figure I can get something to eat out of it. Before, I would have composted them.

Kiddie pool = garden plot, just make sure you drill a few holes in the bottom. Can fill in the bottom few inches with; leaves, small branches, kitchen raw vegetable scraps, coffee grounds, egg shells, paper egg cartons, then top it off with gardening soil and plant.

My godmother grew up in the Depression. Her whole back yard was full of rows of food, not grass. I always had our small plot full of the same. My neighbors and friends make fun of us but we have never lacked anything. Last year after many years wo a family flock, we bought some birds including buff Orpingtons. This was the first year we had babies ever. They are amazing moms and do well in the north. Thank you for encouraging others, and being real. Water gardens and fancy landscapes are pretty, but these days not practical. Friends, he’s right 1/2 hour a day do something. Tomorrow I’m taking elderberry cuttings and planting them in yogurt containers for my friends and family. With so much illness, the berries are a hot item to have to make syrup, tincture, or juice from. One step at a time. Just put your foot forward.

Poked holes in the bottom, seeds were $.01(didn’t even dent the pack) from DG and the little potting mix I used and some fertilizer from WM were also dirt cheap because I got tons of everything 90% or more off during the early fall gardening sales. For me, it’s about economics and common sense….I began a compost for the veggie garden and a compost for other areas of the garden for non-edibles…..I can’t afford soil…compost will add nutrients to the soil naturally, so I don’t buy fertilizer….can’t afford that either….I re-use and re-mix my soil all the time. My backyard garden is two years old…built with discarded wood and rock surrounds I picked up at the ranch….in the city though, I need to have a fence put up…..to keep strays out….sadly….
My abuela used to throw seeds in a front little bed and the herbs would grow!!! I’ve labeled myself a haphazard gardener….I’m going to keep trying and sharing! God bless us all! For the strength what this life will bring. 🙏🌌🌟💖💐💗✨

We have been doing the homestead thing for about 4 years now and I am so glad it happened before all this bullshit. We were slightly ahead of the game. Forget politics, race, religion, affiliations. We are all gonna suffer if folks don't get on board. We have told and said till we were blue in the face. Time will tell for them at this point. We will keep on doing our gardening, our raising and butchering our own meat. If you're lacking and you come looking to me, well,, I just don't know if I can help. I will if I can but not to the detriment of my own household! You're doing a great job, we'll be watching from now on! Thank you!

TRUTH!! Nailed it my friend. People need to find what edible and medicinal plants are in their area. NOW!!
Any container can be used as long as you put holes in the bottom for drainage.
People waste their time. There is nothing you can not learn how to do from searching the internet. Learn how to grow. Learn how to preserve the food you grow. Dehydrating- you can find them dirt cheap in second hand stores, garage sales
Water bath canning and pressure canning. Hundreds of you tube channels have videos on how to do it.
Most important food you can grow is a potato. You can SURVIVE on potatos.
Does not apply to us up here in the great white north though. Been a horrid winter with cold down to -43.
Gardening for us is June to September so have to grow it all at once. Am starting onions, leeks and medicinal herbs next month.
Fortunate to be homesteader. Prepped and ready.
    Thank you.

( I get my medicinal plant seeds from Baker Creek seeds from USA)
I live in zone 3b so this requires me to start these seeds in house. Our last frost is June 1. A few of the herbs I must grow outside in a make shift hoop houses (zap straps on ends of plastic and a frame made with willow branches or other materials to protect them from an unexpected frost. Have lost cucumbers, beans and squash 1st week of August. Usually first frost 1st week of September. So I do a workaround now. Buy my greenhouse plastic from a local tree grower. They change their plastic every two years $50 for 100'
The rest of my medicinals I.e bark, lichen, plant I wildcraft from my area I.e. plantain, usnea lichen, elderberry etc.
Other medicinals like corn silk for example is good for Urinary tract infections and kidneys. So many uses for things we throw out not realizing it's worth. Look up lemon seeds.
I have to grow majority of them as annuals as we see -40 in winter.
I dry them and make decoctions, tinctures, infusions, salves and teas.

Quick tip* You gotta keep in mind when planting items in the ground that will grow tall is how much shade they will eventually begin casting across your existing garden space. For those with limited sunshine in the yard this should be a planned thought. 👍🏻

Thank you!! Look for the answers yourself. There is information all over the internet. If you don't want to search the internet. There are old folks with decades of knowledge in their heads! There is information online for all the growing zones! Don't sit around wanting someone to hold your hand! Its great to take advice on here from others....but darn people, get up off your butt and do something for yourself! Do you think when things get REALLY bad that someone is gonna be there to hold your hand? NO. Everybody else is gonna be busy trying to take care of their own families.

Thanks, heaps Lead for giving me some inspiration on planting. I am guilty of procrastinating because I bought a fig tree and a mango and thought, "where in the heck am I gonna plant that!", mind you, I have 5 acres, of mainly clay, but we have had a lot of rain so the ground is easier to dig. So I figured just put them in somewhere, and they are powering. I also have a blackberry that came up in my veggie patch from seed, I stuck it in a pot, and it has taken root through the drain holes! No movin' that sucker now! LOL.Thanks for the great advice mate. I'm so glad that I am not the only chaotic gardener! :D The shortages are hitting even here in Australia, so get your house in order folks. Take care Lead and family!

I just discovered your videos. I just have to say I LOVE your honesty. Some people try to make gardening seem so hard (must be the HGTV type gardening) and you just simplified it. It's about doing and seeing what works. It's all dependent on where you are, what kind of soil you have, etc there is no one size fits all. Even people in the same zone can't necessarily grow the same things.

As far as land, I go to the R E office and ask if they have land available. I have purchased 5 plots of land. Private party land loans. Usually the lands are a little out of town but so what. People are so afraid to live out of a city. It's like their brainwashed that they can't. Please do not fear. Do not live in fear. I love living 7 miles from a town. My first piece of property was 12 miles from my town and I loved it. My children who are now adults do not and cannot sleep in a crowded city.

You can make your own soil with a worm farm. Lots of videos showing how to. You can do a no til plot by laying out layered cardboard then put gardening soil on top, one bed/plot at a time. I would contain the sides with bricks garden edging or something to keep it from washing out of the bed with all the rain Florida gets.

Hello Mr. Lead! I hate that I missed the live, but I was actually catching up on your other posts 😊 You can actually compost those old dead pepper plants, and other yard waste. Why throw it away?! Also there is an South African method of farming where you dig a trench down the middle of your garden beds and bury garden waste like branches, dead plant stalks and even leaves, and cover it with dirt. It helps to hold water in so you can water less and of course it also breaks down for nutrients.

    • @beccagee5905
      @beccagee5905 2 роки тому

You can also put those things in the bottom portion of a raised bed and top with garden soil.

Let me tell you this... YOU are the person who inspired me to grow. Your advice is ALWAYS 100% spot on. You learned through trial and error, and although you encourage watchers to do that, they don't want to waste time & resources, so they are looking for the surefire way. (We know that don't exist, you touched on that) Now you taught me how to mix and refresh soil and my plants thrived. But the MOMENT i changed soil to a dollar store brand, i killed 80% of my plants. I don't advise to "just use ANYTHING" unless you KNOW what you're doing.

Hello. Just discovered you. We live in a second floor apartment and I started a balcony garden 3 years ago. I dont have space to overwinter stuff but I use any leaves that dont have disease. I cover my soil with them and let it break down over winter right in the pot. Last year I covered it all with bags and I had the prettiest soil this time around. I started with top soil. The cheapest thing and now it's all pretty. No worms or nothin.
I dont have a lot of space but I'm using the balcony to learn so when we get land I can grow what I want.
I grow in small walmart trashcans and long storage containers used for storing shoes. I just put holes in them and use the lids to catch water on the bottom. My balcony was full of food. I was trying to grow all kinds of stuff. Lol

Well he had been gone bout 15 minutes or so and I heard someone walkin round our property. I called the police, he's messing round with the door and crap I'm freakin clear out. Long story short police didn't come for several hours. I called the hubby and he's like call the neighbor he'll be there in a second, called him he came running across the road blazin and took care of it scared the dude off. After that moment hubby and I was like nope ain't doin that no more. We don't have no problem with police but buddy we know how to take care of ourselves too.
